Google Meet’s August 2026 update makes its AI-generated meeting notes more useful after a call: Take notes for me can capture screenshots of presented slides alongside key takeaways, while Meet organizes notes, transcripts, and recordings in a “Google Meet” folder in the organizer’s Drive. These additions build on the existing note-taking feature; they do not turn its AI notes into a verbatim or guaranteed-accurate transcript.
What changed in Google Meet
In an August 26, 2026 Workspace update, Google said Take notes for me can capture screenshots of presented slides alongside critical takeaways. The screenshots supply visual context when a note refers to a slide, making it easier to connect a written point with the presentation being discussed.
The same update says Meet automatically organizes meeting notes, transcripts, and recordings in a parent folder named “Google Meet” in the host’s My Drive. Attendees can receive Drive shortcuts to those materials. This is an organization change for meeting artifacts as well as a notes feature update.

Take notes for me captures discussion and action items during a meeting. Google describes the resulting notes as a Google Doc saved in Drive and attached to the Calendar event for internal invitees. After the meeting, the notes document is generated shortly after it ends and saved in the organizer’s Drive. Depending on meeting setup and organizational settings, participants may also have access through automatic sharing or Drive shortcuts.

Google’s January 2026 description of the workflow says notes, transcripts, and suggested next steps can be sent to Gmail and attached to the Calendar invitation. Which materials a participant can access depends on sharing configuration and the organization’s Meet settings; a shortcut does not necessarily mean every attendee has unrestricted access.
What each artifact is for
- Notes: An AI-generated account of discussion, takeaways, and action items, now with slide screenshots when presented content is captured.
- Transcript: A text record of what was said, when transcription is available and enabled.
- Recording: A video record, when recording is available and enabled.
- Calendar and Gmail links: Places Google says meeting notes and follow-up information may be attached or delivered.
The artifacts are related but not interchangeable: notes condense and organize discussion, while a transcript and recording provide different forms of source material.

Customize what the notes emphasize
Google’s May 28, 2026 update describes controls for turning note sections on or off during a meeting. Available sections include Summary, Decisions, Next Steps, and Details. The Decisions section can label outcomes as Aligned, Needs Further Discussion, Disagreed, or Shelved. Google also said it streamlined the Summary section.

These controls let a meeting’s notes emphasize the information its participants need rather than applying the same structure to every discussion. They are customization options within Take notes for me, distinct from the August additions of slide screenshots and Drive-folder organization.

Where Google Meet notes are saved and who can see them
The organizer’s My Drive is the main location: Google says the notes document is saved in a “Google Meet” folder, alongside organized meeting transcripts and recordings. The organizer can configure automatic sharing with invited participants. Google also says the notes document follows the organization’s configured Meet retention policy, so availability over time is governed by that policy rather than an assumed permanent archive.
Google’s help documentation describes a September 2026 move of the previous Meet recordings folder into the new Google Meet folder, with old notes retained. That stated migration concerns the existing recordings folder; it should not be read as a change to an organization’s retention rules.

Eligibility, language, and administrator controls
Take notes for me requires an eligible Google Workspace edition or Google AI plan, according to Google Meet Help. The supported languages listed are English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. The feature supports one language at a time; Google says multiple languages spoken in the same meeting are not currently supported.
- Host-management settings can restrict who is allowed to start or stop note-taking.
- Administrators may require explicit consent for meeting features such as note-taking, recording, and transcription.
- Sharing and retention are affected by organization settings, so the organizer’s folder and a participant’s access may not be identical.
If the feature or an artifact is unavailable, the relevant checks are whether the account has an eligible plan, whether the host or administrator permits the feature, whether any required consent has been given, and whether the selected meeting language is supported.

Can Meet summarize a meeting you joined late?
Google Meet Help describes a “summary so far” option for people who arrive after a meeting has started. It is intended to help a late arrival catch up on the discussion captured to that point. It is still an AI-generated summary, not a substitute for checking the full notes, transcript, or recording when exact wording or context matters.
Review the notes before relying on them
Google recommends clear audio, using an agenda, and reviewing and editing AI-generated notes for accuracy on its Meet product page. A slide screenshot can clarify which visual material a takeaway refers to, but it does not establish that the written summary captured every qualification or decision correctly. Treat the document as an editable aid for follow-up, and verify consequential details against the meeting record.
Why the update matters—and what it does not establish
The practical change is that a post-call record can connect written takeaways to presentation visuals and bring the meeting’s key artifacts together in Drive. That can reduce the effort involved in finding a relevant slide or locating the notes and recording after a call. Whether it improves a particular team’s workflow depends on access, sharing, language, and retention settings.

Those are figures reported by Google, not independently audited measurements. Google also announced expanding note capture to meetings beyond Meet, including meetings hosted on other providers; that is an announced capability, not a guarantee that every external meeting will be supported in every account or situation.
The update is therefore best understood as a more context-rich, better-organized follow-up workflow around Take notes for me—not proof that AI meeting notes are complete, error-free, or universally available.
