There is no universal winner: Waze is the clearer choice if you want to sort listed fuel stations by price and set fuel-type or brand preferences. Google Maps stands out for its documented fuel-efficient route option and trip planning. Price coverage depends on location, so check what each app actually shows along your route—and verify the price before filling up.
Which app is better for finding cheap fuel?
For comparing station listings, Waze documents the more explicit controls: you can set a preferred fuel type and brand, then sort results by price, distance or brand. Google Maps can show nearby fuel prices where available, but its published guidance does not establish equivalent sorting controls. That is not proof that Maps lacks them; check the options in your current app.
Sort fuel stations in Waze
In the Waze phone app, set your preferred fuel type and brand in the gas-station preferences. Waze says those preferences apply when you use the app in the car. When you view gas-station results, choose a sort order—price, distance or brand—if the controls are available in your app. See Waze’s instructions for setting preferred gas stations.

Look for fuel prices in Google Maps
Google’s guidance describes searching Maps for nearby fuel and viewing listed prices. In the UK, Google announced on 8 October 2026 that Maps and Waze would show fuel prices using the government’s Fuel Finder data; searching for “petrol” or “fuel” can surface prices in that rollout. The announcement does not establish the same feed in other countries. It also says Maps can show which fuels a station offers, but does not document persistent fuel-type or brand preferences equivalent to Waze’s.

Where fuel-price coverage applies—and how much to trust it
Fuel listings are location-dependent. The clearest documented current rollout is the UK announcement of 8 October 2026; do not assume that either app has the same price feed everywhere. Outside that scheme, availability and the source of prices may vary.
Waze says its business information can come from users, Google and other partners, and warns that it does not verify third-party data or guarantee that it is accurate or current. In the UK, Fuel Finder requires stations to report price changes within 30 minutes. However, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s factsheet dated 31 March 2026 said around 90% of petrol stations had signed up at that time—not that participation was complete or that this is the October 2026 count. The government estimated average annual savings of £40 for households that own a car through the Fuel Finder scheme; that figure is not an estimate of savings from either app individually. Compare the detour, not just the pump price
A low listed price does not necessarily mean the lowest-cost stop: reaching that station may add distance or time. Check its route and distance, weigh the detour against the likely saving, and confirm the displayed price at the pump. Neither app is documented here as calculating net savings after the cost of driving to a station.

Google Maps: choose a fuel-efficient route
Google documents a “Prefer fuel-efficient routes” setting intended to favor lower fuel consumption. Its routing explanation says the model considers factors including road incline and congestion. This is a route preference, not a guarantee that every trip will consume less fuel. Google’s road-trip guidance also describes setting a departure or arrival time. Waze: respond to traffic and route changes
Waze emphasizes traffic alerts and real-time rerouting. Its documented route ranking can consider restrictions, user preferences, road types, estimated arrival time, route length and the number of road segments. Waze also supports scheduled drives with a leave-time notification. These features may help when traffic response and route alternatives matter, but the available sources do not establish a quantitative winner for traffic accuracy or arrival-time estimates. In July 2026, Google said a Gemini-powered gas-station search was rolling out to the Waze beta community globally. That announcement does not establish general availability to all Waze users, so treat it as a beta feature rather than a standard way to find fuel.

Choose based on your route and priorities
- Choose Waze when price sorting and adjustable fuel-type or brand preferences are most useful, and local listings show prices you can use.
- Choose Google Maps when you want to consider fuel-efficient routing or plan around a departure or arrival time.
- Check both before a longer drive if prices, station coverage or route suggestions differ. The best choice can change by location and trip.
To follow the route safely, set preferences before driving and use the app’s in-car guidance rather than handling the phone on the road.
