Short answer: Both apps can download maps before a trip, but their documented offline capabilities differ. Google Maps can provide offline driving guidance when the entire route fits inside the downloaded area; it does not provide offline traffic, alternate routes, transit, cycling, or walking directions in Google’s cited guidance. Apple Maps on iOS 17 and later documents offline driving, walking, cycling, and public-transport directions, plus selected place details such as hours and ratings. Apple’s coverage is limited to supported areas, so neither app is a universal winner.
Download the complete destination and likely detours while you still have internet access, verify the map appears in the app’s offline list, and keep a connectivity option if live traffic or dynamic rerouting matters.
What “offline navigation” actually provides
An offline map stores map data on your device so the app can display roads, places, and—where supported—calculate guidance without a Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. It is not the same as having every online feature available. Live traffic, incident reports, changing transit departures, business updates, and cloud-synchronised data generally depend on connectivity.
The comparison below reflects official Google and Apple support documentation available on October 13, 2026. It is documentation-based rather than a hands-on accuracy or speed test.

How to download Google Maps for a trip
Do this while connected to the internet. Menu names can vary slightly by app version, but the current workflow is the same on iPhone and Android.
- Open the offline-map controls. In Google Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, then choose Offline maps.
- Choose the area. Select a searched place or choose Select your own map. Pan and zoom until the rectangle covers your destination, every road on the planned route, the airport or station, and likely detours.
- Check the download size. Larger rectangles consume more storage. If the area is too large, split it into overlapping downloads rather than omitting a critical section.
- Download and verify. Start the download on Wi-Fi if possible, then return to the offline-map list and confirm the area is present. Do not rely on a download notification alone.
- Refresh before departure. Google maps can expire. Update any map marked expired or nearing expiry while connected. Google says the app attempts automatic updating when the expiration is 15 days away or less and the device is connected to Wi-Fi.
- On Android, consider storage location. Google supports saving offline maps to a compatible portable SD card on supported devices. The option and wording depend on the phone and Android configuration.
Google’s offline driving boundary
Google’s own wording is precise: “If your internet connection is slow or unavailable, your offline maps can guide you to your destination as long as the entire route is within the offline map.” If a route exits the saved rectangle, the app may not be able to continue guiding offline. Downloading only the city centre is risky when an airport, hotel, trailhead, or border crossing lies outside it.
Offline Google driving also removes traffic information and alternate routes. The route you see is based on stored map data, not current congestion or newly reported closures.
How to download Apple Maps for a trip
Apple’s offline-map feature requires iOS 17 or later and works only in areas where Apple supports offline maps.

- Open Offline Maps. In Maps, tap your picture or initials, then choose Offline Maps.
- Add a map. Choose the option to add a new map. Search for the destination or select your current location.
- Frame the coverage area. Adjust the map boundary to include the complete driving route, walking or cycling approaches, transit stops, and a buffer for detours.
- Review the size. Apple shows the potential download size. Make sure the iPhone has enough free storage before starting.
- Download on a reliable connection. Keep the app open until the map appears in the Offline Maps list, then open that list again to confirm it is available.
- Check update settings. Automatic updates are enabled by default. Apple also provides controls such as Wi-Fi-only downloads, optimized storage, and an offline-only use setting.
What Apple documents offline
For supported areas, Apple says offline maps can provide information and navigation without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Its documented modes include turn-by-turn driving, walking, cycling, and public transport, along with estimated arrival times. Apple also documents offline place-card information such as opening hours and ratings.
Those statements do not guarantee that every destination, transit network, or place has the same coverage. If the destination is important, download its area and test the map before leaving service.
Plan the download around your actual itinerary
The safest offline area is not simply the smallest rectangle around a hotel. Build it around decisions you may have to make during the trip.
- Road trips: include the complete route between fuel, rest, border, and overnight stops. Add alternative roads where a closure would leave you stranded.
- Urban travel: cover the airport or rail station, accommodation, every neighbourhood you expect to visit, and the return route.
- Walking or cycling: include the approach from the station or car park, not only the final attraction. Download a wider area if trails or cycleways cross city boundaries.
- Public transport: save the full set of stops and transfers. Offline schedules can become stale, so treat downloaded transit guidance as a fallback rather than a live departure board.
- Border and island trips: verify each country or territory separately. A map covering one side of a border may not include roads on the other side.
After downloading, switch the phone to airplane mode briefly, open the map, and inspect the destination. This is a functional check, not proof that every turn or place detail will remain available throughout the journey.

Which app is better for common travel situations?
Driving through areas with unreliable service
Google is suitable when you can keep the entire route inside a downloaded area and can accept guidance without traffic or alternate routes. Apple is the stronger documented fit for travellers who also need offline walking, cycling, or transit directions, provided the destination is supported and the iPhone runs iOS 17 or later.
Using buses, trains, or metro systems
Apple’s documentation explicitly includes public-transport directions offline in selected areas. Google’s cited guidance says offline transit directions are unavailable. Even with Apple, confirm the map before departure because real-time departures, platform changes, cancellations, and service alerts require current data.
Walking or cycling without mobile data
Apple documents both modes offline. Google’s cited help page does not. Download a generous area and carry a separate safety plan for remote routes; an offline map cannot report a blocked trail or emergency conditions.
Needing opening hours and ratings
Apple documents offline place-card hours and ratings. Google’s cited offline article does not promise those details. Save critical reservations, addresses, and opening times separately rather than assuming either app will show a current listing.

Relying on live congestion information
Neither offline download should be treated as a substitute for a connection. Google explicitly removes traffic and alternate routes offline, and the cited Apple material does not establish equivalent offline traffic coverage. Arrange connectivity if road conditions can materially affect your plans.

Regional support is not universal
Google says offline downloads may be unavailable in some countries or regions because of contractual limitations, language support, address formats, or other reasons. Apple says offline maps are available only in selected areas. A successful download at home does not prove that every stop on a multi-country itinerary is supported.
Storage can become the hidden failure
Both services store map data locally. Apple displays the expected file size before downloading; Google also shows download information in its offline-map controls. Keep additional room for photos, system updates, and navigation caches. If storage is tight, remove old map areas only after confirming that the current trip’s downloads are complete.

Google provides an expiry mechanism and a 15-day automatic-update threshold when connected to Wi-Fi. Apple’s cited support page does not give a comparable numeric expiry interval, but automatic updates are on by default. Review both apps shortly before departure rather than downloading weeks in advance and never checking again.

Downloads do not follow you to every device
Apple says offline maps are not synced across devices, so an iPad or second iPhone needs its own download. Keep the map on the phone that will actually provide navigation.
Apple Watch limitation to understand
Apple documents offline map viewing on Apple Watch when the iPhone is powered on and within Bluetooth range, typically about 10 metres. The watch is therefore displaying information supplied through the nearby iPhone; it is not a standalone offline-map download. If you leave the phone behind or move out of range, do not assume the watch will continue to provide the same map access.
Troubleshooting before you leave
The download option is missing
- Update the app and operating system where applicable.
- Check that the destination is in a supported region.
- Confirm you are using the app’s offline-map controls rather than saving a place or route bookmark, which is not the same as downloading map data.
The map is present but navigation stops
- For Google, check whether the route left the downloaded rectangle; the entire route must fit inside it for offline guidance.
- Re-download a larger area while online, including detours and approach roads.
- For Apple, verify that the destination and travel mode are supported in that area and that the offline map is still listed as available.
The route seems wrong or slow
- Remember that offline Google driving has no live traffic or alternate routes.
- Refresh the map before departure so recent road changes have a chance to download.
- When a connection returns, recalculate the route to obtain current conditions.
Place details are absent
Offline place information is not documented identically between the apps. Apple specifically lists hours and ratings in supported areas; Google’s cited offline guidance does not promise them. Save essential addresses, booking details, and opening times outside the map app.

A practical pre-trip checklist
- Connect to dependable Wi-Fi.
- Confirm the destination is supported by the chosen app.
- Download a region that contains the full itinerary and realistic detours.
- Check the file size and available phone storage.
- Open the app’s downloaded-map list and verify the map is present.
- Update Google maps that are expired or close to expiry; review Apple’s automatic-update settings.
- Test the destination view in airplane mode.
- Save critical addresses, reservations, and emergency information separately.
- Arrange connectivity if you need live traffic, service alerts, or dynamic rerouting.
Bottom line: which should you download?
Choose Google Maps for offline driving when its whole-route boundary is easy to satisfy and you mainly need stored road guidance. Choose Apple Maps when you use an iPhone on iOS 17 or later and need the broader set of offline modes Apple documents—driving, walking, cycling, and public transport—plus selected offline place details. In both cases, regional support and current map data matter more than the brand name. Download and verify the area before travel, and keep a way to reconnect whenever conditions can change.
