Google Maps can do more than show a route: you can keep an area available offline, organize places for later, save regular trips and adjust how Maps activity is handled. Here are seven practical features, with platform limits where they matter.
1. Download a map area before you travel
Offline maps are a useful backup for destinations where mobile data may be unreliable. In the Google Maps app, search for the place or area, open its place card, and use the offline map download option. You can also select an area from your profile menu’s Offline maps section. The exact layout can vary by app version.
Downloads are not available in some regions. Offline driving directions also have limits: Google says they do not include traffic information or alternative routes. Offline public-transport, cycling and walking directions are unavailable. Downloading an area therefore helps with basic driving navigation, but it does not replace checking current conditions while connected. Google’s offline maps instructions explain the feature and its limitations.
2. Save places in lists
Use lists to collect restaurants, sights, shops or other places you want to revisit. Open a place in Maps and choose Save, then add it to an existing list or create one. Lists make it easier to group places by trip, neighborhood or purpose instead of trying to remember them later.

Saved places are private by default. To let others see a collection, create and share a list. Google’s computer help page says a list can contain up to 3,000 entries. See Google’s instructions for saving favorite places.
3. Find saved and recent places from “You” on Android
On Android, the You tab can help you search and filter personal places, including saved and recent places. It can also let you share selected places. If a saved place is within 25 km, Maps may show it under “Nearby saved.” The available surfaces depend on your Maps activity, so the tab may not look identical for every account.

If you regularly travel between the same places, save the trip in the mobile app for quick access to directions and estimated arrival times. Google supports saved frequent trips for driving, transit and two-wheeler journeys.

You can save a trip from a directions search or from suggested trips in Maps. Look for the save option associated with the route; labels and placement may differ by device. Google’s saved-trips instructions cover the supported travel modes and steps.
5. Use Incognito mode for a narrower Maps history
Maps Incognito mode stops specified Maps activity from being saved to your Google Account, updating Timeline or personalizing Maps. Turn it on from your profile menu if the option is available in your app.

It is not general-purpose anonymity. Your internet provider, other apps, voice search and other Google services may still save activity. Offline Maps and some other Maps features are unavailable while Incognito mode is on. Read Google’s explanation of Incognito mode in Maps before relying on it for a particular privacy need.
6. Check Timeline settings before depending on location history
Timeline is an opt-in feature and is off by default. When enabled, precise device location is regularly saved to Timeline on devices where you are signed in and have turned it on. You can manage or delete Timeline data in Maps, but Timeline is based on device data and is not available in Maps on a computer.

Google describes special handling for certain sensitive places, but other activity—such as searches or interactions—may still be saved under separate settings. Check your own account and device controls rather than assuming Timeline covers every kind of Maps activity. See Google’s Timeline help and its Location History privacy information.
7. Put offline maps on an SD card, if your Android phone supports it
Some Android phones can store offline map areas on an SD card instead of internal storage. Google’s instructions require Android 6.0 or higher for portable-storage use, and the phone must support a card configured as portable storage. In Maps, open the offline maps settings and choose the storage location if the option is available.
A card is optional, not a requirement for offline maps; this tip is useful only if your phone supports the needed storage setup. Follow Google’s SD-card instructions for offline maps.
