Google Maps Timeline and Apple Maps Visited Places can both create a personal record of where you go, but they use different storage designs. Google Timeline is off until you opt in and saves precise location to each device where it is enabled; an optional encrypted backup can copy that history to Google’s servers. Apple says Visited Places is end-to-end encrypted, syncs between your Apple devices, and cannot be read by Apple when the required account protections are enabled.
Neither setting is a complete description of all location processing. Google’s Search Services History and Web & App Activity can retain other location-related information, while Apple describes location, search, and route data sent to operate Maps. The practical choice depends on whether you prioritize device-local control, cross-device convenience, or Apple’s stated end-to-end encryption for the saved visit list.
Google Timeline and Apple Visited Places at a glance
| Question | Google Maps Timeline | Apple Maps Visited Places |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Off by default; you must opt in. | Visited Places must be enabled; only visits after activation are included. |
| What the history represents | A personal map of places visited and routes or trips, with travel modes such as walking, biking, driving, and public transit. | A list of places you have visited. |
| Primary storage model | Saved on each device where Timeline is enabled. | Synced Maps data across devices signed in to the same Apple Account when the account meets Apple’s security requirements. |
| Cloud copy | Optional encrypted backup on Google’s servers; backup is enabled separately on each device. | Apple describes the Visited Places data as end-to-end encrypted. |
| Can the provider read the saved history? | Google’s documentation describes device storage and optional encrypted backup, but does not make Apple’s “cannot read it” claim for Timeline. | Apple says, “Your Visited Places are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.” |
| Automatic retention choices | 3, 18, or 36 months. | 3 months, 1 year, or Forever. |
| Deletion behavior | You can edit visits, delete a day or range, or remove all Timeline data. Device data and a server backup are separate. | You can remove one place, clear the visited-place history, change retention, or turn the feature off. |
| Other location data | Search Services History and Web & App Activity can preserve location-related activity after Timeline is changed. | Maps can process location, map-view, search, and routing information to provide features. |
The table separates the saved-history feature from the broader data needed to run a mapping service. A privacy setting for one category does not automatically erase every related search, photo, route, or device signal.
Google’s current help page says, “Timeline is off by default for your Google Account and can only be turned on if you opt in.” Apple’s Apple Maps & Privacy statement, dated September 14, 2026, makes the end-to-end-encryption statement for Visited Places while also describing operational data flows.

What Google Maps Timeline saves
A continuous record of places and movement
Timeline is Google’s personal map of places visited and routes or trips taken. When it is enabled, Google says precise device location is regularly saved to every device with Timeline turned on, even when Google apps are not open. The result can include individual places, the path between them, and an inferred travel mode such as walking, cycling, driving, or public transit. The feature is therefore more than a list of businesses: it can reconstruct portions of a day’s movement.
Timeline is an opt-in account feature, not an automatic consequence of installing Maps. The setting can differ by device, so an account used on several phones or tablets may have Timeline active on some devices and inactive on others. Google’s explanation of the feature and its privacy behavior is at Google’s Timeline privacy help page.
Where Google puts the data
Google’s Android management instructions describe Timeline as data saved on each enabled device. Google also offers an optional encrypted backup on its servers so a user can move Timeline to another device. Backup is a separate opt-in on each device; enabling it on one phone does not automatically enable it everywhere.
Recommended Free Tools
The separation matters when you delete information. Turning off backup or deleting the server backup does not erase Timeline data that remains on a device. Google also warns that edits or deletions made on one device may not be reflected on other devices. Before selling, resetting, or sharing a device, check Timeline on every device that has had the feature enabled. The documented controls are in Google’s Timeline management instructions.
How long Google keeps Timeline
Google documents three automatic-deletion choices: 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months. These are account settings, not measurements of how long Google keeps every kind of location signal. A shorter Timeline interval removes older entries from that history, while other Google activity controls can still contain related information.
Editing and deleting entries
Within Timeline, you can correct a place, adjust a visit or time, remove a single entry, delete an entire day or date range, or delete all Timeline data. Menu names can vary by Maps version and device. If you are trying to remove a particular trip, verify both the date range and the device on which the entry is displayed; the local-copy model means one device’s view may not represent every copy.

Automatically removed sensitive-place visits
Google says visits to places it identifies as particularly personal, including some medical and support facilities, are deleted from Timeline soon after identification. Google also cautions that its classifications may not always be up to date. This is not a promise that every associated record disappears: searches, interactions, or photos connected with the same place can remain under other settings.
How Google may use Timeline
Google says Timeline information can support Maps personalization, anonymized location-based insights, fraud and abuse prevention, and service development. Depending on settings, it can also help nearby businesses estimate advertising effectiveness. Google describes those as estimates and says personal Timeline data is not shared with businesses for that purpose. The stated uses do not change the storage distinction between device data and an optional encrypted backup.
What Apple Maps Visited Places saves
A visit list that begins after you enable it
Visited Places keeps a list of places you have been. Apple says only places visited after the feature is enabled are shared with Maps, so activating it does not retroactively create a complete history of earlier trips. Apple Support describes controls for viewing, retaining, removing, and clearing this list.
Visited Places is distinct from individual navigation requests and from Significant Locations & Routes. Those features can have separate controls and data flows, even though they all involve location. Apple’s user instructions are at Apple Support’s location-history controls guide.
End-to-end encryption and account requirements
Apple’s privacy statement says, “Your Visited Places are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple.” It describes Visited Places, Pinned Locations, Recents, and Guides as Maps data that can sync across devices with end-to-end encryption when you are signed in with an Apple Account and have two-factor authentication enabled.
In practical terms, the encryption claim applies to the saved visit history and its sync under those account conditions. It does not mean that every location signal generated while using Maps is end-to-end encrypted in the same way, nor does it mean that Maps receives no data. Apple’s full description is in Apple Maps & Privacy.

Retention choices and removal
Apple Support lists three Visited Places retention options: 3 months, 1 year, or Forever. You can change the duration, remove an individual visited place, clear the complete visited-place history, or switch Visited Places off. If you leave the feature enabled after clearing it, new visits can appear again.
Apple separately documents a Clear History control for Significant Locations. Clearing Significant Locations does not substitute for clearing Visited Places, so check both areas when your goal is a broader cleanup.
What each service processes outside its saved-history feature
Google: Timeline is not the entire account history
Google warns that changing or deleting Timeline can leave other location-related information in the account when Search Services History or Web & App Activity is enabled. Examples include a general-area or IP-derived location associated with Search and Maps activity, search queries, interactions, and location embedded in photos when camera settings record it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo review those separate records, use Google’s account guidance at Google’s location-history controls information. Treat this as a separate review: removing a Timeline day does not automatically remove a search performed that day, a photo’s embedded coordinates, or an IP-based area estimate.
Apple: operating Maps requires location and route data
Apple says Maps may receive the request time, device and software details, authorized device location, visible map area, and interactions such as search terms and places viewed. For navigation, Apple describes receiving the origin or current location, destination, and selected transport mode.
Apple also describes preferred-route and predicted-destination geometry used for route results, widgets, and departure suggestions. It says steps are taken within 24 hours so Apple does not learn that a submitted route is a preferred or predicted route. These operational exchanges are separate from the encrypted Visited Places history.

Apple’s de-identification and on-device processing statements
Apple says precise locations are converted to less-exact locations within 24 hours. It also says routing, traffic, and nearby-points-of-interest information may be used in anonymous, aggregated form to improve Maps. Many personalized features, according to Apple, are created using data generated on the device.

Apple’s privacy page also says, “We do not collect or retain personal data associated with your Maps usage.” Read that as Apple’s characterization of its privacy approach alongside the same page’s explanation of operational location and route data sent to provide Maps functions; it is not a claim that no location data is processed at all.
Storage, encryption, and deletion: the differences that affect you
Device-centered versus encrypted sync
Google’s Timeline design starts with copies on individual devices and adds a separately enabled encrypted backup. That can give you a direct local copy, but it creates more places to check when you change phones or delete history. Apple presents Visited Places as end-to-end-encrypted Maps data that syncs across devices signed in to the same Apple Account when two-factor authentication is enabled. The architectures are not equivalent, so a single “more private” ranking would hide the trade-off.
What a deletion actually covers
On Google, deleting a server backup covers that backup, not Timeline data stored locally. Deleting an entry on one device may not update another device. On Apple, clearing Visited Places removes that saved list, while Significant Locations has a separate history control and future visits can be recorded if Visited Places remains active.
Retention intervals are not universal location erasers
Google’s 3-, 18-, and 36-month choices apply to Timeline. Apple’s 3-month, 1-year, and Forever choices apply to Visited Places. Neither set of choices automatically governs every search, route request, photo coordinate, traffic signal, or other service record described in the providers’ privacy documentation.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to audit Google Maps Timeline
- Open Timeline on every relevant device. In Google Maps, open your profile or account menu and choose Timeline. Confirm whether the feature is on for that device. Labels and placement can differ by Maps version.
- Check the device list. Identify phones or tablets that still hold local Timeline data. A device you no longer use may still contain entries until it is wiped or its local history is removed.
- Review backup separately. In Timeline’s settings, determine whether encrypted backup is enabled. Remember that backup is configured per device and that deleting the backup does not delete local copies.
- Choose auto-delete. Select 3, 18, or 36 months if automatic removal fits your needs. This setting governs Timeline, not unrelated Google activity.
- Correct or remove entries. Edit inaccurate places or times, delete a day or range, or remove all Timeline data. Recheck other enabled devices after making changes.
- Inspect broader account controls. Review Search Services History and Web & App Activity using Google’s account settings guidance. Check photo location metadata separately if your camera records coordinates.
How to audit Apple Maps Visited Places
- Open the Maps location controls. On iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Maps > Location and inspect the Visited Places controls. Apple may change menu labels between iOS releases.
- Review the saved list. In Maps, go to Places > Visited Places. Confirm which locations are present and whether the feature is active.
- Set retention. Choose 3 months, 1 year, or Forever. The choice applies to Visited Places, not every Maps-related record.
- Remove selected places or clear the list. Delete an individual place when only one entry is sensitive, or use Clear History to remove the visited-place list.
- Check account protection and sync. Ensure the devices use the same Apple Account and that two-factor authentication is enabled if you want the end-to-end-encrypted sync described by Apple.
- Review Significant Locations separately. In Location Services settings, find Significant Locations & Routes and use its Clear History control when appropriate.
Which approach fits different privacy priorities?
If you want the smallest cloud footprint
Google lets you keep Timeline on devices without enabling its server backup, but you must manage each device and accept that edits may not propagate. Apple’s encrypted sync is designed for multi-device continuity rather than a strictly single-device history. Choose based on whether local-only storage or seamless encrypted sync is the more important constraint.

If you need history on several devices
Apple’s Visited Places sync is built around the same Apple Account and two-factor authentication. Google can move Timeline through encrypted backup, but backup must be enabled separately and local copies remain device-specific. In either ecosystem, verify the destination device before deleting the old one.
If you want automatic aging-out
Google’s shortest documented interval is 3 months, and Apple’s shortest Visited Places interval is also 3 months. The available middle and longest choices differ: Google offers 18 and 36 months, while Apple offers 1 year and Forever. Set the interval in the history feature itself, then audit other location-related settings separately.
If you are investigating one sensitive visit
On Google, remove the Timeline entry and check the relevant device, backup, searches, account activity, and photo metadata. On Apple, remove the visited place and consider Significant Locations, route history, searches, and other Maps interactions. A place disappearing from a visit list does not prove that every related service record has disappeared.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming installing Maps starts a history. Google says Timeline is off until you opt in; Apple Visited Places includes visits only after activation.
- Deleting a Google backup and stopping there. Device-local Timeline copies can remain.
- Expecting cross-device deletion in Google. Google’s Android guidance warns that edits or deletions on one device may not appear on other devices.
- Treating Apple’s encryption statement as “no data leaves the phone.” Apple separately describes location and route information used to operate Maps.
- Using the wrong retention control. Google Timeline and Apple Visited Places have their own intervals; Search, Web & App Activity, and Significant Locations use separate controls.
- Assuming sensitive-place deletion covers every associated activity. Google specifically warns that searches, interactions, or photos can remain even when a place is removed from Timeline.
- Relying on an old menu path. Android, iOS, and Maps releases can move settings or change labels; use the current on-device labels and the linked support pages as a check.
Bottom line: different designs, not one universal privacy winner
Google Maps Timeline is an opt-in, device-centered record of precise places and trips, with optional encrypted server backup and explicit 3-, 18-, or 36-month deletion choices. Its main management challenge is scope: local copies, backups, and other Google account activity must be reviewed separately.
Apple Maps Visited Places is an opt-in visit list with 3-month, 1-year, or Forever retention. Apple says the saved list is end-to-end encrypted and unreadable by Apple when synced under the stated Apple Account and two-factor-authentication conditions. That protection applies to the history feature, while Maps can still process location, search, and route information needed to provide navigation and personalization.
