If Google Maps keeps changing the route you shared, add one or two meaningful stops along the road corridor you want before sharing directions. Those waypoints help guide the route, but they do not lock every road choice: active navigation can still adapt to traffic and road conditions.
Why a shared Google Maps route can change
Choosing a route or sharing directions does not freeze Google Maps’ navigation. Google says active routes change dynamically with real-time traffic and road conditions, and it does not guarantee that navigation will follow a static, pre-calculated route. See Google’s Navigation Connect FAQ.
A stop on the route gives Maps an intermediate destination to follow. Choose a real, convenient place on the corridor you want—not an arbitrary location that creates a detour. Adding one or two well-placed stops is a practical nudge, not a route lock.
Add a stop before sharing directions
On Android
- Open Google Maps and get directions to your final destination.
- Tap More, then Edit stops.
- Add a place along the route you want to take. Add another stop only if it helps guide the corridor.
- Reorder the stops if needed, then tap Done.
Google Maps Help says the app allows up to nine stops, including the final destination. Stops are not available for public-transit or flight searches. See Google Maps Help for Android directions.

On a computer
- Open Google Maps and click Directions.
- Enter the starting point and final destination.
- Click Add destination and enter a meaningful stop on the desired corridor.
- Drag destinations into the order you want, then review the route.
The computer directions help page also gives a limit of nine stops, including the final destination, and excludes public-transit and flight searches. See Google Maps Help for directions on a computer.
Choose the route you want, then share it
Before sharing, compare the displayed options by travel time, corridor, and any toll or highway preferences that matter. Google marks the selected route blue and alternatives gray; tap or click a gray route line to select that option. The available routes and estimates describe what Maps is showing at that moment, not a promise that navigation will remain unchanged. Once the route and stops look right, use Maps’ sharing option to send the directions. The recipient should still check the route in their own Maps view before setting off; live conditions or differences in the available options can affect what navigation recommends.

What stops can—and cannot—control
Stops make the route pass through the places you specify, but Maps can still choose different roads between them or adapt active navigation as conditions change. Settings such as avoiding toll roads may express a preference, but they do not guarantee a specific road or eliminate every route that includes the restricted feature.

If you are building directions through a Maps URL rather than using the app’s directions interface, the limits differ: Google’s Maps URLs documentation allows up to three waypoints on mobile browsers and up to nine otherwise, and warns that some Google Maps products may ignore the waypoint parameter. Those URL constraints are separate from the app Help pages’ nine-stop limit. See Google Maps URLs documentation.
Check the route again before departure, and follow road signs and traffic rules if conditions change while you are driving.
