Choose Google Maps when you need a short-lived link for someone who does not have a Google Account, want to share trip progress and an ETA during navigation, or are coordinating across Android and iPhone users. Choose Apple Find My when everyone uses Apple devices and you want location sharing connected to Apple apps, Family Sharing, device finding, and Safety Check.
Neither service can be called universally more private or more accurate from the available documentation. The practical differences are who can receive a location, how long sharing lasts, which apps and devices can display it, what notifications are available, and how quickly you can review or stop access.
Google Maps or Find My: the decision at a glance

How the two sharing models differ
Google Maps is recipient- and duration-oriented
Google Maps starts with the person who should receive your location and the period for which that access should remain active. You can share with a Google contact or create a link. Google’s Android and iPhone help pages say a link can be used for up to 24 hours by a person who does not have a Google Account. The recipient may see your name and profile photo, your recent device location, battery status, and additional details that depend on the sharing method. Location Sharing is separate from Maps Timeline. Turning Timeline off does not by itself prevent Location Sharing, so check the active sharing list rather than treating Timeline as a master switch.

Find My is ecosystem-oriented
Find My assumes that the people and devices involved use Apple services. Apple describes location sharing through Find My and other Apple apps, with support across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. When two people use iPhones running iOS 15 or later, Apple also describes Live Location details such as direction and speed while a person is moving. The exact display and controls can vary with operating-system version and account setup. Apple’s current guide is Find My and location sharing.
Family Sharing membership is not consent to continuous location sharing. Each family member still chooses whether to share. Apple’s Family Sharing documentation explains the family controls at Apple Family Sharing.

How to share your location with Google Maps
Start person-to-person or link sharing
- Sign in to the Google Account you intend to use on the phone running Maps. Google requires an account and device for initiating Maps Location Sharing.
- Open Google Maps and open the account menu, then choose Location sharing. Labels and placement can change slightly between Android and iPhone versions.
- Choose the person or contact, or choose the option to create and copy a link. Set a duration rather than leaving access open indefinitely when the task is temporary.
- If the recipient has no Google Account, send the link. Google documents a maximum link lifetime of 24 hours; it is not a permanent public URL.
- Review the active recipients list immediately after sending. This catches an old contact, an unintended duration, or a link share that you meant to end.
The recipient may see your name and photo, recent device location, battery status, and other method-dependent information. That visibility is why the recipient and duration should be checked before you send the link.

Start navigation to a destination by car, on foot, or by bicycle. While navigation is active, use Maps’ trip-progress sharing control to send the destination, current location, and estimated arrival time. This mode is designed for a journey rather than ongoing personal tracking: Google says it ends when you arrive or when you stop navigation. If you need to continue sharing after arrival, create a separate Location Sharing session and choose its duration.
Trip progress is useful when a friend needs to know whether you are on schedule but does not need a standing location link. It also avoids forgetting to revoke a link after a one-off journey, because the navigation event supplies the end condition.

Set arrival or departure notifications
In supported cases, the recipient can add an arrival or departure notification for a place. Google’s notification help page says a recipient can add up to five such notifications per sharer. The sharer is informed by email and may also receive a push notification. Eligibility is not universal: certain account configurations and link-based sharing are excluded. If the notification option is absent, first confirm that the sharing method and accounts qualify instead of repeatedly reinstalling Maps. Details are in Google Maps notifications help.
Stop Google Maps sharing
- Open Maps, open the account menu, and return to Location sharing.
- Select the person whose access should end and choose Stop or the equivalent stop-sharing control.
- If you shared trip progress, use the trip-progress control and stop it, or end navigation. Ending navigation also ends the trip-progress session.
- Reopen the recipient list to verify that the person or link is no longer active. A stopped session and an expired link are different from a still-listed recipient.
Stopping one person does not automatically review every other recipient. Check the full list, especially if you have used both direct contact sharing and links.
How to share your location with Find My
Share with a person
- Open Find My and select the people section. Choose the control to add a person or share your location.
- Select the Apple contact and choose the sharing duration offered by the current operating system. Use a limited period for a temporary situation and an ongoing option only when you have an intentional long-term arrangement.
- Confirm the person appears in your active sharing list. Family membership alone does not add everyone automatically.
- Tell the recipient which Apple app or device they should use to view the location if they are unsure. Apple documents visibility through Find My and other listed Apple apps.
When both people use iPhones with iOS 15 or later, Apple describes Live Location information that can include direction and speed while moving. That additional detail is conditional on the devices and software, not a promise for every Find My contact.
Use Family Sharing without assuming automatic consent
Family Sharing can support location-related notifications and family coordination, including recurring arrival or departure notifications and alerts when a family member is not at a place during a specified time. It does not silently turn on location sharing for every member. Each person chooses whether to share, so a family member missing from the Find My list may simply not have enabled sharing.
Stop sharing with one person or everyone
- Open Find My and view the people with whom you share.
- Select one person and use Stop Sharing My Location, or use the global control when you intend to stop sharing with everyone.
- Check the list again. Removing one person does not prove that no other person, family group, or Apple sharing route remains active.
Apple also documents a temporary Hide Location flow. In the cited guide, hiding is temporary and resumes the next day. Treat it as a pause, not a permanent revocation, and verify the status afterward.

Deleting the Find My app is not a stop-sharing method. Use the in-app or system controls instead.

Use Safety Check for a broader review
Safety Check is a distinct Apple privacy and personal-safety tool, not merely another Find My button. On a supported iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check. It can help review or stop selected sharing and access, including some Find My location sharing. Apple cautions that Safety Check may not cover every account or every source of sharing, so treat its results as a review of supported connections rather than proof that all location access everywhere has been removed. Privacy: what the controls do and do not prove
Google’s documented controls
Google describes Location Sharing as device- and account-specific. It is off until you initiate it through a Google service, and the people you choose can receive recent location and battery information. This is a description of control scope, not an independent assessment of Google’s data retention, encryption, analytics, or corporate privacy practices. If privacy is the deciding factor, compare the settings and policies that apply to your account rather than assuming that a link or a Google Account makes the service inherently safer.
Because Maps Timeline and Location Sharing are separate, disabling Timeline is not a substitute for checking recipients. Conversely, a Timeline setting does not tell you who currently has a live-location link.
Apple’s documented controls
Find My provides per-person and all-person stop controls, plus the temporary hide flow and Safety Check. Apple warns that stopping sharing may be noticed. Earlier operating-system versions may show a Messages notification when sharing stops, so do not promise that a stop action will be invisible to another person.

“When you stop sharing through any of the methods listed below, your location will disappear from the other person’s Find My, Maps, Contacts, and Messages apps.”
That statement appears in Apple’s Find My and location sharing guide. It explains what the other person’s apps should display after stopping; it does not guarantee secrecy about the fact that sharing was stopped.
Do not infer accuracy or anonymity
The official pages used here do not publish a head-to-head location-accuracy test or a statistic about reliability, usage, safety outcomes, or data retention. Signal conditions, permissions, battery state, device settings, and software versions can affect what a recipient sees, but these sources do not support declaring one platform more accurate. Likewise, a Google link is controlled sharing for a limited period, not proof of anonymity, and Find My’s Apple integration is not proof that every sharing source is covered by one switch.

You are meeting someone who uses a different platform
Use Google Maps when the other person only needs a temporary view and may not have a Google Account. Set the shortest useful duration or use the navigation trip-progress mode, then verify that the session ends. If the recipient is an Apple user who already uses Find My, that does not make a Google Maps link invalid; it simply means the person will view the link rather than an Apple-native Find My relationship.

You are coordinating a drive or walk
Google Maps has the clearer documented workflow because it shares destination, current position, and ETA and ends at arrival or when navigation stops. Use it for a single journey. If you need an ongoing family arrangement rather than one trip, configure Find My or a normal Maps Location Sharing session separately and make the duration explicit.

Your household uses Apple devices
Find My is the more natural fit when everyone is already using Apple apps and devices, especially if you also need Apple’s family notifications or device-finding ecosystem. Ask each person to opt in; being in the same Family Sharing group is not enough.
You are responding to a personal-safety concern
Use the service’s stop controls immediately and review the active recipient list. On Apple devices, open Safety Check for the broader supported review and read Apple’s warning that others may notice a change. If you fear coercion, stalking, or immediate danger, prioritize a safe device and local emergency or support services; do not rely on a promise that location sharing can be stopped without detection.
You are trying to locate a lost belonging
Person-to-person location sharing and item tracking are different functions. Do not treat a Bluetooth item tracker as a substitute for consent-based live location sharing, and do not assume that turning off one device guarantees that every location source is hidden.
Troubleshooting and failure modes
The recipient cannot open a Google Maps link
- Check whether more than 24 hours have passed; Google documents that maximum period for a recipient without a Google Account.
- Confirm that the sharer did not stop the session or replace it with a different recipient list.
- Try a direct contact share when link-based notifications or account eligibility are the problem.
- Verify that the phone has the required account, location permission, connectivity, and current Maps access before sending a new link.
An arrival notification is missing
- Check whether the sharing method is a direct eligible share rather than a link; Google says link-based sharing and certain accounts are excluded.
- Check the five-notification-per-sharer limit described in Google’s help page.
- Remember that the sharer may receive an email and possibly a push notification when a recipient creates an alert.
Trip sharing continues or ends unexpectedly
Google’s trip-progress mode is tied to navigation. It should end at arrival or when navigation stops, while a separate Location Sharing session can continue according to its own duration. Identify which mode you started before troubleshooting; stopping navigation does not necessarily revoke a separately created location share.
A Find My contact is not visible to the family
Confirm that the person deliberately enabled sharing and that the Apple Account, device, and operating-system requirements are compatible. Family Sharing membership by itself does not begin sharing.
Find My still shares after the app was deleted
That is expected behavior. Deleting the app does not itself stop location sharing. Reinstalling it is unnecessary for the conceptual fix; use Find My’s person-specific or global stop controls, and then verify the list.
Location appears again after being hidden
Apple’s cited guide describes Hide Location as temporary, with sharing resuming the next day. If you need a lasting change, use Stop Sharing rather than Hide Location, then check each active sharing relationship.

You need to know whether every source has been closed
No single check in these documents proves that every possible account, device, app, or third-party sharing route is inactive. Review Google Maps recipients and account controls separately from Apple Find My and Safety Check. Keep the platform distinction clear: stopping one service does not automatically stop another service that was configured independently.
