Google Maps can organize saved places into named lists, so restaurant tips, errands, and trip ideas don’t have to disappear into one hard-to-scan collection. Create a custom list, add places as you find them, and use its icon or map visibility to make it easier to spot later.
What Google Maps lists can do
Saving a place to a list turns Maps into a lightweight organizer for locations you may want to revisit. You can keep a list private, share it with others, or invite collaborators, depending on how you plan to use it. Lists can also be shown or hidden on the map, and Android surfaces recently saved and nearby saved places.
Google Maps Product Director Maz Khorasani described the purpose of custom list icons in an October 9, 2025 Google post: “Your map becomes customized with your favorites or must-try spots — making it super easy to organize and understand the different types of places you’ve saved.”
Choose between default and custom lists

There is no single best structure. A few lists with clear purposes can make retrieval easier; a long collection of narrowly defined lists may take more effort to maintain.

Create a list and add places
On Android
- Open Google Maps and tap You.
- Tap New list, enter a name and description, choose whether it will be private or shared, then save.
- Search for a place or tap it on the map, open its place card, and tap Save.
- Select the list you want, or create a new one.
- To change a custom list’s icon, find it under your lists, open its menu, choose Edit list, then Edit icon, and save.
On desktop
- Open Google Maps and select Saved.
- Choose New list, give it a name, and select an icon if desired.
- Find a place, click Save, and choose the list where you want it stored.

Find saved places when you need them
On Android, the You tab includes Recently saved and Nearby saved. Google says Recently saved is unavailable if you have not saved a place in the preceding 180 days. Nearby saved is unavailable if you have no saved place within 25 km (about 16 miles). You can also search and filter personal places. On the map, a visible list can make its saved places easier to scan alongside nearby streets and businesses. If the pins add clutter, hide the list; on desktop, use the controls in Saved to show or hide lists on the map. Google Maps Help
Keep a list private or share it
You need to be signed in to a Google Account to save and find places. Google says saved places are private unless you create and share a list. Google’s computer help describes private lists and lists viewable by anyone with the link; sharing controls and labels differ across platforms. Starred places cannot be shared. For a group plan, invite collaborators where that option is available, and manage their access separately from whether the list is visible to others. You can also follow another person’s list. Know the list limit
Google’s computer help page lists a limit of 3,000 entries per saved list and warns that lists exceeding that may not display properly. Treat a list as a focused collection rather than an unlimited archive. Google Maps Help: Computer

Why saved-place lists are easy to overlook
The feature is modest, but useful when recommendations and plans arrive at different times. A place can go into the right collection as soon as you find it, then be retrieved by its list, by nearby saved places on Android, or by showing the list on the map. Google reported in 2020 that people worldwide had saved more than 7 billion places on Maps; that is a historical company figure, not a current total. Google, August 26, 2020
