Choose the fastest route when arriving as soon as possible matters most. Choose the fuel- or energy-efficient route when its arrival time works for you and reducing estimated vehicle consumption matters more. When the feature is enabled and Maps has multiple routes to offer, it can show the fastest and most efficient options together so you can weigh the time difference against the estimated savings.
These are estimates, not guarantees of your arrival time, fuel use, or emissions. Maps bases its comparisons on route conditions and regional average vehicle consumption, not on a live measurement of your particular car or driving style. The choice is best treated as a trip-by-trip trade-off, not a promise that one route will always save a particular amount.
What the two route choices mean
The fastest route is the option Maps identifies as quickest for the trip. The fuel- or energy-efficient route is the option it estimates will use less fuel or energy for the configured vehicle. The efficient option may take longer, but it is not necessarily a dramatic detour: Maps weighs the expected arrival time as well as efficiency when deciding what to recommend.

Turning the setting off means fuel or energy efficiency is not part of the route recommendation. It does not necessarily remove every efficiency cue: Maps may still mark the most efficient available alternative with a green leaf, based on the vehicle’s engine type. The setting therefore affects how Maps chooses or recommends routes; it should not be read as a guarantee that every efficiency-related label disappears when it is off.
Also, “fastest” and “most efficient” answer different questions. Fastest is about estimated travel time. Most efficient is about estimated vehicle energy use. The efficient route could be a sensible choice even if it is not the quickest, while the quickest route could be the practical choice when timing is more important. The app’s comparison helps you see the trade-off; it does not decide which priority matters more to you.
Which route should you choose?

There is no single best choice for every trip. A small arrival-time difference may be worthwhile if you want to reduce estimated consumption; a substantial delay may not be. The useful comparison is the one Maps displays for your route and configured vehicle. Do not assume that the green leaf or an efficient-route label guarantees a particular percentage of savings.

Start with your own arrival-time requirement. If you have a time-sensitive commitment, the fastest route is the straightforward choice even if Maps estimates that another route would use less energy. If you have flexibility and the efficient option arrives at a time that still suits you, its lower estimated fuel or energy use may be a worthwhile reason to take it.
When Maps shows relative savings, consider that information together with the displayed arrival times rather than in isolation. A savings comparison does not tell you how much your own trip will cost or exactly how much fuel your car will consume. It is a relative estimate for the available routes and the vehicle type selected in Maps. The app does not offer a universal rule saying how many minutes are worth a given amount of estimated savings.

Route conditions matter to the comparison, too. The fastest option may be influenced by current traffic, while the efficient option reflects factors such as hills, traffic patterns, and road type as well as the vehicle profile. Conditions can change, and the displayed options are a decision aid, not a guarantee that traffic, travel time, or consumption will match the estimate throughout the drive.
What goes into Maps’ efficiency estimate
Google says the estimate takes account of regional average vehicle consumption and characteristics of the route. These include how steep the hills are, patterns of stop-and-go traffic, and road types such as local streets and highways. Google also says its calculation draws on insights from the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory and data from the European Environment Agency.

A route’s hills affect the kind of driving involved; stop-and-go traffic represents a different pattern from steady travel; and local roads and highways are distinct road types in the calculation. These are route-level inputs, combined with regional average consumption, rather than a reading from the engine or battery in your specific vehicle.
That approach makes the estimate useful for comparing route options, but it cannot capture every factor affecting a specific drive. Your actual consumption can differ from the displayed comparison because the estimate uses averages and route-level information rather than measuring your vehicle and driving conditions in real time. Treat it as guidance for comparing the available choices, not a personal fuel-economy forecast or a guarantee of the exact emissions from your trip.
Maps describes the efficient option as using less fuel or energy and producing lower CO₂e emissions. That comparison is tied to the routes and configured engine type being considered. It does not mean Maps has measured your particular car’s emissions, and it does not establish a fixed amount of fuel, energy, or CO₂e saved for every driver.

Why engine type changes the comparison
Maps estimates efficiency differently for gas or petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles. The vehicle profile matters because a route comparison intended for one engine type may not reflect the likely relative efficiency of another. For example, Google notes that diesel’s relative economy advantage is generally greatest on highways. Hybrids and EVs tend to benefit more in stop-and-go city driving and on hills, where regenerative braking can help recover energy.

Those are general tendencies, not a promise that a particular route will be better for every vehicle in the category. They help explain why checking the profile is important: the route suggestion is calculated for the type selected, and a mismatched type can make the efficiency comparison less relevant to the vehicle you actually plan to drive.
Turn fuel-efficient routing on or off
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then Navigation.
- Under Route options, turn Prefer fuel-efficient routes on or off.
- For a car, set the engine type under Settings → Your vehicles. Choose the closest match: gas/petrol, diesel, hybrid, or electric.
The setting may also be available from the route’s Options menu after you load directions. Menu wording and availability can vary by app version and region. If you do not see the feature, it may not be available where you are: Google says fuel-efficient routing is offered only in select regions, without listing every supported region in Google Maps Help.
If the control is available, switch it on when you want efficiency considered in the recommendation. Switch it off when you do not want fuel or energy efficiency to influence the recommendation. You can still compare the options that Maps displays, but with the feature off, efficiency is not factored into the route recommendations. Depending on the available routes and engine type, an efficient alternative may still be marked with a green leaf.
Choose the closest vehicle type
A useful route comparison depends on a suitable vehicle profile. If you have not selected an engine type, Maps defaults to gas or petrol, which Google describes as the most common type in most countries and regions. For CNG or LPG vehicles, Google’s help instructions map the choice to gas. For motorcycles, Google says only the gas or petrol engine type is currently supported.

If the profile does not match your vehicle, the displayed efficiency comparison may not reflect the kind of vehicle you are driving. Check the profile before relying on a route’s estimated savings, especially if you have switched vehicles or are planning a trip in a rental. Selecting the closest available type makes the comparison more relevant, but it does not turn a regional, route-based estimate into a measurement of your individual car.
How to compare the routes before you start
- Confirm the vehicle profile. Check that the engine type matches the vehicle you will use. Maps otherwise defaults to gas or petrol when no engine type is selected.
- Check the efficiency setting. Turn on Prefer fuel-efficient routes if you want efficiency considered in the recommendation. If it is off, Maps does not factor efficiency into its route recommendations.
- Load directions and inspect the alternatives. When the feature is enabled and multiple routes are available, compare the fastest and most efficient choices shown. Maps can show both options, but that depends on the feature being enabled and more than one route being available.
- Read the arrival-time difference. Consider whether the efficient option’s estimated arrival time still works for your plans. The recommendation may favor efficiency when arrival times are roughly the same, but Google does not provide a fixed number of minutes that defines “roughly the same.”
- Weigh relative savings against that time difference. Decide whether the extra time is acceptable for this trip. Maps does not promise a fixed percentage of savings or a universal time threshold.
- Account for charging separately if you drive an EV. The efficient route does not include charging stops, so the route comparison is not a complete charging plan.
If arriving sooner is the priority, select the fastest route. If the efficient option’s arrival time suits you and lower estimated fuel or energy use is more important, choose it. Treat the comparison as an estimate for the vehicle profile you configured, not a prediction of the exact result for every car or driving style.
A quick decision check
Before selecting, ask yourself three questions: Is the efficient route’s arrival time acceptable? Does Maps show a meaningful relative efficiency advantage for the alternative? Does the vehicle type shown match the vehicle you are driving? If the first answer is no, the fastest route may fit your needs better. If the arrival time works and the comparison points toward lower estimated consumption, the efficient choice may fit better. If the profile is wrong, correct it before using the comparison to decide.
This check is particularly useful when you are not choosing based on a single factor. For example, a driver may care about both arriving on time and reducing consumption; Maps’ time and relative-savings comparison lets that driver assess the available trade-off. It does not rank your personal priorities for you, and it cannot tell you whether the estimated savings are worth the delay in your circumstances.
Limits to keep in mind
- Availability is regional. Google says the feature works only in select regions. The help information does not enumerate all supported locations, so check whether the setting appears in your app.
- Efficiency is estimated, not measured for your car. Regional average consumption and route factors inform the comparison; your actual use may differ.
- The recommendation balances time and efficiency. An efficient route is not automatically the recommended route in every case. Maps may prefer it when arrival times are roughly the same, and otherwise show relative savings for comparison.
- EV route efficiency is not a charging itinerary. Energy-efficient routing for EVs does not include stops to charge.
- No universal savings number is promised. Google’s product guidance describes relative comparisons but does not give a fixed savings percentage or a universal time threshold for choosing one route over another.
- A route label is not a guarantee. The green leaf or an efficient-route designation identifies an estimated efficiency advantage based on the selected engine type, not a guaranteed result for every car, trip, or driving style.
For EV drivers, the charging limitation deserves separate attention. Google states: “Energy-efficient routes for EVs don’t include stops to charge.” Use the route comparison for its energy-efficiency purpose, then make any charging plans independently rather than assuming the displayed route has accounted for them.
