On a Google Maps driving route, a circled “1” marks a toll route. If Maps shows a price beside it, that amount is an estimate—not a guaranteed charge. Check the toll operator’s website or road signs for the actual price.

What the circled 1 means

The marker identifies a route that uses a toll road. The “1” does not mean there is one toll booth, that the toll costs one dollar, or that the road is Route 1. A recent report identifies this specific icon as a toll-route marker; Google’s directions help confirms that Maps can show estimated prices for routes with toll roads, but does not name the circled-1 icon itself. BGR’s October 5, 2026 explanation and Google’s directions help support those separate points.

Does it mean you have to pay a toll?

It means the route uses a toll road; the marker alone does not tell you the final amount you will pay. If an estimated price appears, Google says it is not a replacement for the actual price set by the toll operator. Check the operator’s website or the road signs before relying on the estimate.

The estimate can depend on the day, time, date, and payment method, such as cash, pay-by-mail, a pass, or a tag account. Google also says it does not calculate prices for congestion-based roads or lanes where the price changes with traffic. Google’s directions help states: “Toll prices in Maps are estimations. They do not replace actual prices set by the toll operators, which they publish on their websites and road signs.”

Why might there be no toll price?

Google’s toll-price feature is available only in certain cities, and Maps does not calculate every kind of toll. The available information does not establish why a price is missing in a particular case, so the absence of an amount does not establish that the route is toll-free. Verify with the toll operator or road signs.

How to turn off toll-pass price assumptions on Android

Google describes an Android setting called “See toll pass prices.” Turning it off makes Maps display prices without assuming you have a toll pass. The exact setting and availability may vary by platform and location; consult Google’s Android directions help for the current instructions.

How to compare routes

When choosing between routes, weigh the estimated toll cost against travel time and whether the route uses toll roads. Also account for the payment method behind the estimate, then check the operator’s posted price if the cost matters to your decision. Google’s directions help explains that route estimates can depend on travel timing and payment method.

Why the symbol can be confused with other map icons

The circled 1 is a toll-route marker, not a traffic-incident report. Google’s general map-layer guide covers traffic colors and incident symbols, but does not list this particular marker. For incident icons, Google says you can tap an icon for more details; that guidance does not change the meaning of the circled 1. See Google’s map-layers guide.

Google Maps Community described a 2022 rollout of toll-pass prices on Android and iOS across nearly 2,000 toll roads in the U.S., India, and Indonesia. That is historical rollout context, not a current count of supported roads or a current availability list. Google Maps Community announcement, June 13, 2022.
