Google Maps can be difficult to replace because it combines live driving reroutes, destination research, saved places, Street View previews and offline maps in one app. Those are practical reasons a switch may feel like a downgrade—but they are not proof that no alternative works. Apple Maps, for example, supports offline maps on iOS 17 and later, while the available sources do not establish that it matches Google across every feature or region.
Why can Google Maps be hard to replace?
The challenge is less about getting from A to B than about everything around the trip. Google Maps brings navigation together with place information, saved lists, street-level previews and offline access. If you rely on several of those functions, replacing the app means checking whether another service covers each one—not just whether it can show a route.
Google’s app listing describes these capabilities, while noting that some features vary by city or country. Availability also depends on the platform and current rollout. Google Maps on the App Store
Which five Google Maps features matter most?
1. Live traffic and automatic rerouting
For connected driving, Google Maps describes turn-by-turn navigation that can reroute based on live traffic, incidents and road closures. That can make the app useful after a trip has started, when conditions change and the original route is no longer the best option. This benefit depends on having a connection and on relevant traffic information being available.

- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
2. Place discovery, reviews and photos
Google Maps is also a destination-research tool. Its app listing describes searching for places and consulting user reviews, photos, filters and questions about locations. That helps answer questions such as what a place is like or whether it suits a visit—tasks that are different from following turn-by-turn directions.
3. Saved places and shareable lists
Users can create custom lists of favorite places and share them, according to the app listing. A collection built up over time can be a switching cost: moving to another map app may mean rebuilding lists or changing how you share recommendations.

4. Street View previews
Street View can help orient you before arrival. Google describes using previews to inspect an area, including details such as parking and entrances. Coverage is not universal, so it is best treated as a useful preview where imagery exists—not a guarantee that every destination has a current street-level view.

Google Maps lets users download areas for offline driving navigation and destination searches. But offline access is not the same as connected navigation: Google says offline drivers do not get traffic information or alternative routes. Map downloads are also unavailable in some countries or regions because of contractual, language, address-format or other limitations. Google Maps Help: Download areas and navigate offline

Does an alternative such as Apple Maps cover the same needs?
Apple Support says Apple Maps on iOS 17 and later can provide map information and navigation without Wi-Fi or mobile data. Downloaded maps can also be kept current automatically as map details change. That establishes offline capability, but it does not show that Apple Maps is equivalent to Google Maps in live traffic, rerouting, local listings and reviews, saved-list sharing or street-level imagery across all regions. For a fair comparison, separate the jobs you need the app to do. “Works offline” can mean basic map access, driving directions, place search or something else; it does not by itself tell you whether the app offers live traffic or rerouting without a connection.

How should you decide whether to switch?
- List the jobs you actually use. Separate driving directions from traffic updates, place research, shared saved lists, arrival previews and offline navigation.
- Check your regular locations. Feature availability can vary by country or city. Confirm that the alternative offers the functions you need where you travel, rather than relying on a general feature description.
- Test offline behavior separately. Check whether your chosen app lets you download the relevant area and what it supports without a connection. Do not assume offline access includes traffic or alternate routes.
- Account for your device. Apple’s cited offline guidance applies to Apple Maps on iOS 17 and later; it does not establish availability on other platforms.
- Keep the app that covers your real gaps. You can use an alternative as your default and retain Google Maps for a specific need, such as a saved collection or a place preview, if replacing it would remove a function you depend on.
What the feature counts do—and do not—tell you
The Associated Press reported on March 12, 2026, that Google described its Maps database as containing more than 300 million places and said it had more than 500 million contributors. These are figures attributed to Google in the AP report, not independently audited counts; “contributors” should not be read as a count of unique active users. Google’s product overview also highlights recommendations and immersive navigation, with at least one feature marked as available only in the US and India. Because rollouts can change, check the current availability note for your location rather than assuming every feature is global. Google Maps product overview
