Google Lens can do more than identify an object: it can extract and translate text, help with a photographed homework problem, look up a landmark, and search a selected detail in a picture or webpage. The route depends on what you’re looking at—your camera, a saved image, a Chrome tab, or a YouTube Short—and some results vary by device, country, and feature availability.
What can Google Lens do besides identify objects?
Google documents Lens actions for a range of everyday images. Depending on the image and available results, it may:
- Find similar apparel or home goods and show where to buy them.
- Return product information from a barcode.
- Help save details from a business card to contacts.
- Show a book summary and reviews.
- Offer to add an event from a flyer or billboard to a calendar.
- Show historical facts or opening hours for landmarks and buildings.
- Surface information about an artist when you scan a museum painting.
- Suggest a species or breed for a plant or animal.
These are documented possibilities, not guaranteed results for every photo. Shopping results in particular depend on country availability; Google’s Lens help page lists supported countries, but that list is not a promise that shopping—or every other feature—works identically everywhere.

Use region selection when the whole image contains too much: a particular shoe in a room, a sign in a landscape, or one object in a group. Google documents image-region selection on Android and iOS. On desktop, Chrome Lens can target content on a webpage.

Android or iPhone/iPad: select an image region
- Open the image in Google Photos or start Lens from the Google app.
- Tap the image, then drag the selection box over the detail you want to search.
- Review the results. On Android, you can refine the search with a follow-up such as “Ask about this image.” Google recommends selecting a smaller area when you want more specific results.

Desktop: select webpage content in Chrome
Open Chrome and choose Search this tab with Google Lens. Then click, highlight, or drag over the content you want to search. You can ask about page content in the side panel or open results in new tabs. Google describes this feature in Chrome Help.

How do you copy, translate, or act on text in an image?
Lens can recognize text in a camera view or image, then offer actions based on what you select. On Android or iOS, open the image in Lens, tap the text, and adjust the selection if needed. Google lists options such as copying, listening, translating, or searching selected text. A phone number, contact detail, link, or address may also bring up a relevant action—such as calling or texting, saving a contact, opening a link, or viewing an address in Maps. These context actions depend on the selected content and are not a universal menu.
Translate text with Lens
- Open Lens on the camera view or an image.
- Choose Translate.
- Check the source and target languages. Lens can detect the source language; use the language selector to choose or change the translation language.
Google’s general Lens information says translations are available into Google Translate languages, while a separate screenshot-translation workflow documents a narrower language set. Availability can therefore depend on the route you use. Check the language selector on your device rather than assuming every image workflow supports the same languages. Google’s Lens overview and mobile instructions describe these capabilities.
Can Google Lens help with homework?
Google documents a Homework mode for photographed math and science problems, including word problems, geometry, and diagrams. Open the question in Lens and choose Homework when the option is available. Treat the result as help for working through a question, not as a guarantee of correctness; Google’s feature description does not make an accuracy guarantee or define academic policy.
How do you use Lens in Chrome on a computer?
- In Chrome, open the webpage with the image or information you want to explore.
- Choose Search this tab with Google Lens.
- Click, highlight, or drag over the area to search.
- Use the side panel to ask about page content or open results in new tabs.
For this Chrome workflow, Google says a screenshot and page data are sent for processing and temporarily stored for that specific query. Google also says the page or image is not used for training as a result. That statement applies to the documented Chrome Lens query workflow; it should not be read as a description of every Lens surface. See Google Chrome Help.

How do you search a YouTube Short with Lens?
On an Android or iOS phone in portrait orientation, pause the Short and choose Lens from the top menu. You can draw, highlight, or tap a visible object or place to search; the feature can also translate captions. Google says this Shorts feature does not use biometric facial recognition, although searches may return results for notable public figures. See YouTube Help.
How do you search what is on your Android screen?
Google documents an Assistant route for searching what appears across apps and websites on Android 10 or later, with Assistant enabled. The help instructions refer to Screen Context or Use screen context, as well as Use screenshot settings. Labels and the screen-search flow may differ across devices, so the documented route may not match every current interface. Consult Google’s Assistant screen-search instructions if the setting names on your device differ.

What should you know about availability and visual-search history?
Lens is available through different surfaces: Google Photos and the Google app on mobile, Chrome on desktop, and the documented Assistant screen-search route on supported Android devices. Which action appears can depend on the app, device, country, and the image itself; a feature listed in Google’s help is not a guarantee that it is available to every user.
Google says visual-search history can be controlled through Web & App Activity settings. Its Lens help documentation says Visual Search History is off by default in the described setting. Review the current Lens help page and your account activity settings for details that apply to your setup.
