Google Research publicly released Deep Review on October 14, 2026. It is an agentic AI system that examines complex documents for logical inconsistencies, mathematical mistakes, unsupported claims and clarity problems. The tool is designed to give researchers a rigorous checking pass before submission—not to replace expert review or a conference’s peer-review process.
What Google Deep Review does
Deep Review grew out of Google’s Paper Assistant Tool (PAT), an experimental system used with opted-in submissions to STOC 2026, ICML 2026, NeurIPS 2026 and ICLR 2027. Google describes the public release as a drafting and scientific-process assistant for documents that are difficult to verify with ordinary grammar or spell-checking software.
Its intended checks include:
- Logical consistency across definitions, lemmas, proofs and conclusions.
- Mathematical statements, calculations and applications of inequalities.
- Variable names and notation that change or conflict within a manuscript.
- Factual claims that need external grounding.
- Possible overlap or disagreement with existing work.
- Clarity and readability improvements while preserving the document’s technical meaning.
The system reports potential problems and supporting reasoning. Authors still have to inspect the original argument, confirm citations and decide whether a suggested correction is valid.

Google describes a four-stage pipeline intended to spend more reasoning effort where a paper is hardest to check.

1. Document segmentation
An agent decomposes the complete document into logical, potentially overlapping sections. Overlap helps a reviewer examine a proof together with the definitions, assumptions or earlier results it depends on instead of treating each page as an isolated excerpt.
2. Adaptive budgeting
The system allocates more computation to information-dense passages, such as mathematical proofs, than to sections that require less technical analysis. This is a resource-allocation decision inside the review process, not a claim that every sentence receives identical scrutiny.

3. Deep parallel verification
Specialist reasoning agents examine sections in parallel while retaining context from the full document. Parallel checks allow different agents to look for mathematical, logical and factual problems at the same time.

4. Global synthesis and grounding
A synthesis agent combines the section reports, checks them for consistency and can rerun logic checks when findings conflict. Google also says the system uses external grounding to reduce hallucinated criticisms and to test claims against information outside the manuscript.

How to use Deep Review
- Prepare a reviewable file. At launch, Deep Review accepts PDF and plain-text documents. A multi-file workflow is planned but was not available in the initial release, so a paper with separate appendices or supplementary files may need to be combined into one supported document.
- Open the public Deep Review service and upload the manuscript. Every user receives two complimentary document reviews per week. The allowance is measured per document review, not as an unlimited background monitoring service.
- Read findings as verification leads. Check each flagged passage against the manuscript’s definitions, calculations, figures and cited sources. A warning can identify a real error, but it can also result from notation or figures that the system interpreted incorrectly.
- Make and recheck revisions yourself. After changing a proof or claim, inspect every dependent section. Deep Review’s report is feedback, not an automatic patch that establishes a corrected theorem or conclusion.
- Use an API for larger workflows. Researchers with higher-volume needs can connect a Gemini API key for larger limits and programmatic integration through the Deep Review API. The launch information does not state a separate public price or quota schedule for those API calls.

The no-training statement does not mean a manuscript is deleted immediately. Authors handling confidential, embargoed or personally identifiable material should account for the stated one-year UI storage period and follow their institution’s publication and data-governance rules.
What the Paper Assistant pilots found
Google says PAT was used on more than 16,000 opted-in manuscripts. The pilots were aimed at giving constructive pre-submission feedback within 24 hours, including an advanced version of Gemini 2.5 Deep Think in the STOC 2026 experiment.

Reported examples of issues found included inconsistent variable names, calculation errors, incorrect uses of inequalities and gaps in proofs. One participant said PAT identified “a critical bug… that made our proof entirely incorrect,” describing it as an embarrassingly simple mistake that had escaped the authors for months.

These figures describe participant feedback and adoption in Google’s experiments; they are not an independent measurement of error-detection accuracy. The pilot feedback was also separate from official conference decisions.

Does Deep Review replace peer review?
No. Google explicitly frames the system as an augmentation to peer review. Peer reviewers judge whether a contribution is novel, significant, methodologically sound and suitable for a venue. Deep Review performs an automated, document-level checking pass that can expose candidate errors before or during that process.
The distinction matters because Google reports that expert users sometimes encountered hallucinations, particularly with complex notation or figures. A technically trained author or reviewer must reproduce a calculation, inspect a diagram and verify a citation before treating a warning as established. Conversely, an apparently clean report is not evidence that a manuscript is correct or complete.

Practical limits researchers should plan for
- Figures and notation can mislead the model. A report involving an unusual symbol, dense diagram or specialized convention needs manual reconstruction.
- One-document input limits complex projects. Until multi-file input arrives, supplementary material and appendices may not be analyzed as separate linked files.
- Findings are not proof certificates. The system can point to a gap but cannot confer validity on a repaired argument.
- Usage limits affect repeated revisions. Two complimentary reviews per week may be sufficient for occasional checks but not for every edit in a large research group; API integration is the stated route for higher volume.
- Retention still matters. The stated one-year storage period should be considered for embargoed results, confidential collaborations and manuscripts containing sensitive data.
Bottom line
Deep Review is best understood as an automated stress test for a research document. Its segmentation, adaptive compute allocation, parallel specialist checks and global synthesis can uncover inconsistencies that authors miss, especially during a long drafting cycle. The strongest workflow is to run it before submission, verify each warning against the underlying mathematics and sources, and then rely on qualified human reviewers for the final scientific judgment.
