Google Japan’s Gboard Conveyor Belt version is a documented DIY keyboard concept that moves keys toward a user’s fingers on four conveyor-belt rows. It is an intriguing reversal of the usual keyboard design, but the available documentation does not establish that it makes typing faster, more comfortable, or easier. Google describes it as an unsupported project, not a finished product for sale.

What is the Gboard Conveyor Belt version?

Google’s project repository names it the Gboard Conveyor Belt version, or Gboard くるくる バージョン. Rather than keeping keys in a stationary layout, the concept circulates them on belts toward the user’s fingers. A Moneycontrol report dated October 2, 2026, describes four moving rows with 29 keys per row and presents one-handed typing as the design’s intended use. That describes the concept, not a demonstrated improvement in typing.

The project was listed with a release date of October 1, 2026. Google’s repository is explicit about its status: “This is not an officially supported Google product.” The repository and build guide make it a real, documented DIY project, but not a supported retail keyboard. How does the moving-key idea work?

The design changes the relationship between a typist’s hand and the keyboard: instead of moving a hand across a fixed layout, the belts bring keys toward the fingers. The guide’s motorized Moving Keys Edition is the version with detailed assembly instructions. It also lists a Bluetooth Connection Edition as “Coming soon”; that label is not a claim that the edition is available as a finished product.

Logitech Ergo K860 Wireless Ergonomic Split Keyboard with Wrist Rest
  • Improved Typing Posture: Type more naturally with a curved, split keyframe and reduce muscle strain on your wrists and forearms thanks to the sloping keyboard design
  • Pillowed Wrist Rest: Curved wrist rest with memory foam layer offers typing comfort with 54 per cent more wrist support; 25 per cent less wrist bending compared to standard keyboard without palm rest
  • Perfect Stroke Keys: Scooped keys match the shape of your fingertips so you can type with confidence on a wireless keyboard crafted for comfort, precision and fluidity
  • Adjustable Palm Lift: Whether seated or standing, keep your wrists in total comfort and a natural typing posture with ergonomically-designed tilt legs of 0, -4 and -7 degrees
  • Ergonomist Approved: The ERGO K860 wireless ergonomic keyboard is certified by United States Ergonomics to improve posture and lower muscle strain

Moneycontrol characterizes the prototype as intended for one-handed use. That stated purpose should not be confused with evidence that the device is easier to use, more accessible, or more ergonomic than a conventional keyboard. The guide documents construction, and the report describes the idea; neither supplies comparative typing results.

What does the DIY build require?

Google’s build guide specifies four belt loops, one per column, with 29 links in each loop—116 belt links in total. Low-profile switches and keycaps mount to the links. The guide also lists 3D-printed case and mechanism parts, shafts, bearings, sprockets, timing pulleys, a timing belt, screws, and motor-and-driver components.

The guide is a parts and assembly reference, not a verified shopping list for a complete commercial kit. It does not specify one compatible switch model or name a single ready-to-buy set of components. Anyone attempting the build should use the guide’s dimensions and instructions to check mechanical fit and electrical compatibility rather than assuming a part will work because it is described as low-profile. Is it really the future of typing?

That remains an open question. The sources document an unusual mechanism and an intended use, but do not publish measured typing speed, error rates, comfort outcomes, or accessibility results. There is therefore no evidence here that the moving belts outperform a fixed keyboard—or that they are practical for everyday typing.

Arteck Split Ergonomic Keyboard with Palm Rest, 2.4G USB Wireless Keyboard

  • Wrist Rest: Soft cushioned wrist rest helps you to rest your wrist and forearm while typing and makes work easier and more comfortable.
  • Easy Setup: Simply insert the nano USB receiver (stored at the back of the keyboard) into your computer and use the keyboard instantly.
  • 6-Month Battery Life: Rechargeable lithium battery with an industry-high capacity lasts for 6 months with single charge (based on 2 hours non-stop use per day).
  • Package contents: Arteck Split Ergonomic Keyboard, nano USB receiver (stored at the back of the keyboard), USB-C charging cable, welcome guide, our 24-month warranty and friendly customer service.

For context, the distinction is less about a head-to-head product comparison than about what is known: a conventional keyboard keeps its keys stationary, while this DIY concept moves them; a conventional finished product typically comes with product support, while Google says this project is not officially supported. Neither contrast establishes which design produces better typing outcomes.

Can you buy one?

The official materials describe project files and a build guide rather than a ready-made keyboard. Moneycontrol reported on October 2, 2026, that there were no plans to sell the device commercially. That sale-plan statement comes from the report; Google’s own repository establishes the project’s DIY availability and unsupported status.
