Google Careers lists a senior machine-learning role focused on AI-generated content quality for Search and the Discover feed. The posting describes work on content generation and recommendation for Discover and Notifications, including checks for factuality, freshness and coherence. It is evidence of a hiring priority—not confirmation that Google has launched AI-generated stories in Discover or that they appear in users’ feeds.
What Google’s job listing describes
The vacancy is titled “Senior Staff ML Software Engineer, AI Generated Content Quality, Search Discover Feed” and is based in Mountain View, California. Google says the role will build recommendation frameworks and agentic workflows for AI-generated content on Discover and Notifications. Its responsibilities include evaluating content quality and using recommendation signals and feedback to improve personalization and serving efficiency. Google Careers’ listing
Quality and experience the role calls for
The listing names factuality, freshness and coherence as evaluation dimensions. It also asks for substantial software and machine-learning leadership experience, experience with large language model quality evaluation, and production experience with recommendation systems. These requirements suggest the work is not limited to generating text: it also involves selecting, assessing and delivering content through recommendation systems.
Compensation stated in the posting
For the US role, Google Careers gives a base-pay range of $262,000–$364,000, plus a 25% target bonus, equity and benefits. The listing says individual pay depends on job-related factors. The range is specific to this US posting, not a general salary estimate for Google roles; compensation and vacancy details can change, so consult the live listing for current information. Does this mean AI-generated content is already in Google Discover?
No—not on the evidence of this vacancy alone. A job description shows the responsibilities Google is hiring someone to undertake; it does not establish that a corresponding feature has launched, what its final design would be, or how broadly it would be available. The listing does not say that AI-generated stories already appear in every user’s Discover feed. Google’s current product status would need to be established through a separate user-facing announcement or other direct evidence.
What the role could mean for publishers
The posting signals engineering work at the intersection of generation and recommendation: producing AI-generated content, evaluating it, and deciding how recommendation frameworks may surface it in Discover and Notifications. Factuality, freshness and coherence are explicit quality concerns in the role. The description does not disclose the system’s design, its launch timeline, or how Google would distinguish generated material in a feed.

For publishers, the practical point is that the listing does not announce a new content policy. Google’s existing guidance remains the relevant standard: content should be useful, original, accurate and transparent, and it must comply with Discover and Search policies.

Discover eligibility and transparency
Google’s Discover content policies require eligible content to comply with Search and spam policies as well as Discover-specific requirements. They address misleading previews, transparency about authorship and publishers, and clear disclosure of sponsored content, including affiliate interests. Google says policy-violating content may be removed from Discover; repeated or egregious violations may affect eligibility.
AI use is not automatically a policy violation
In February 2023, Danny Sullivan and Chris Nelson, writing on behalf of Google’s Search Quality team, said: “Using automation—including AI—to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies.” Their guidance focuses on the purpose and quality of content, rather than banning it solely because AI helped produce it. Google’s generative-AI guidance for website content adds that publishing many pages without adding value for users may violate its scaled-content-abuse policy.
