First identify what “not working” means: no power, no Wi-Fi, missing from the Google Home app, failed setup, or no response/playback. Start with power, internet, app, and distance checks, then reboot the device. Save factory reset for last because it erases device data and cannot be undone.
Start with these low-risk checks
- Make sure the speaker or display is plugged in and powered on.
- Check that your home Wi-Fi works on another device.
- Update the Google Home app if an update is available.
- During setup, keep your phone or tablet near the speaker or display. Google recommends a distance of 5–20 feet. If the Wi-Fi network does not appear in setup, move within 15–20 feet of the router. See Google’s setup troubleshooting steps.
Then reboot the device. Unplug it, leave it unplugged for one minute, and plug it back in. If your mobile device and speaker or display are linked to the same account, you can also use the reboot option in the Google Home app. A reboot is not a factory reset: it restarts the device without the reset’s data-erasing consequence. Google says a reboot may fix several issues; follow its reboot instructions.
If Google Home will not connect to Wi-Fi
If the device lost its connection, or you changed the Wi-Fi name, password, or service provider, you may need to set it up again in the Google Home app. If it still has the old network saved, Google documents forgetting that network in the device’s settings and completing setup again. Use the Google Nest or Home Wi-Fi connection guide; this guide is localized for India, so availability and router conditions may differ elsewhere.

If you are reconnecting or setting up and it still fails, work through these checks:

- Confirm the Wi-Fi password is correct and another device can connect to the network.
- Restart the router and the speaker or display.
- Turn your phone’s Wi-Fi off and back on, then try again.
- If your router offers both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, try the other band. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.
Google notes that public Wi-Fi may not work for Nest speakers and displays, and hotspots are not officially supported. For Google’s setup-specific troubleshooting, see Fix issues during Google smart speakers or displays setup.
If the speaker or display is missing from the Google Home app
Check that it has power and is ready for setup, and that the Google Home app is current. Move your phone or tablet close to the device, then try the following in order:

- Reboot the speaker or display by unplugging it for one minute and reconnecting it.
- Turn your phone’s Wi-Fi off and on.
- Force-close the Google Home app, reopen it, and check again.
- Move closer to the router. If available, try setup from another supported phone or tablet.
Google’s setup troubleshooting guide covers app discovery and other setup failures. Avoid resetting the device just because it does not appear; try the reversible checks first.
If setup will not complete
Start with the password, router connectivity, phone Wi-Fi, and distance checks above. Keep the phone or tablet 5–20 feet from the speaker or display during setup, and move within 15–20 feet of the router if the network is not listed. Restart the router and device, and try the other Wi-Fi band if your router is dual-band. Google’s guidance does not promise that changing bands will resolve every network issue. Factory reset only after simpler fixes fail
A factory reset clears device data and cannot be undone. Google says you cannot perform a reset by voice or from the Google Home app. The button sequence depends on the exact speaker or display model, so identify your model and follow its specific instructions in Google’s factory reset guide. Do not rely on a button combination intended for a different model.
Before resetting, try the checks for your symptom and reboot the device. If the problem continues, consult the model-specific reset instructions and make sure you are prepared for the device data to be erased.
