The Google Home app is a control interface, not a universal smart-home radio hub. It can manage many compatible devices, but Matter hub functions require compatible physical hardware, and device features, automations, and remote control can depend on the device, network, or manufacturer’s cloud service. These limits do not affect every Google Home setup equally; they matter most when you choose devices and plan what you want them to do.

1. The app alone does not provide every Matter hub function

Google Home can manage compatible devices through its app, but Matter hub functions come from compatible physical Google Home hardware. You do not necessarily need to buy a hub just to use Google Home with non-Matter devices; the hardware requirement applies to Matter setups that need those hub functions.

Hub capabilities also vary by model. Google distinguishes hubs that support Matter over Wi-Fi from those that support both Wi-Fi and Thread. If your Matter setup combines Thread and Wi-Fi devices, Google says the hub must also act as a Thread border router. Its current list includes the Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max as devices supporting Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. Check the live Matter hub and network requirements before choosing hardware.

Google also says IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly. A device may appear to set up successfully on a network without IPv6, then fail to respond or lose other functions. This is a Matter network requirement, not a general requirement for every Google Home device.

2. A connected third-party device may expose only some controls

Compatibility does not always mean feature parity. Google warns that a third-party device may respond to basic voice commands, such as on or off, while controls for brightness or color are unavailable in Google Home. For non-Matter devices, setup in the manufacturer’s app may be required before linking the device to Google Home. Google’s third-party device setup guidance explains the linking process and its limits.

Some integrations also depend on the manufacturer continuing to operate its cloud service. For example, Google’s support page says Belkin informed Google that Wemo cloud service ended on January 31, 2026; cloud-dependent Google Home and Wemo app features no longer function after that change. This is a specific Wemo service change, not evidence that all third-party integrations have failed.

Google’s compatibility page states that Google Home works with over 80,000 compatible Works with Google Home devices. That is Google’s own current figure, not an independent audit or a measure of how many devices offer full control parity. Check the exact model and the controls you need in the compatible-device directory and manufacturer documentation.

3. Automations do not support every device or behavior

Google Home offers automation starters, conditions, and actions, but support depends on the specific device and behavior. A device that can be controlled manually may not provide the event or condition you need to trigger a routine, or the action you want to run. Google’s supported automation starters, conditions, and actions list includes device-specific coverage and identifies some items as not yet supported in Help me create or Ask Home.

Before building an automation, verify each part of the intended sequence:

  • Starter: Does the device expose the event you want to begin the routine?
  • Condition: Can the routine check the device state or other condition you need?
  • Action: Can Google Home issue the precise command, rather than only a basic on/off command?

Check the current support list for the exact device and behavior; general compatibility alone does not establish automation support.

4. Local Matter control does not make remote control cloud-independent

When you issue a Matter command from within the home, Google says it is carried locally over Wi-Fi or Thread. When you are away, the command connects through the cloud to the hub, which then sends the device command locally. Matter’s local-control capability therefore does not mean that remote control works without internet or cloud connectivity. See Google’s Matter control and Multi-Admin guidance for the documented paths.

Matter Multi-Admin lets compatible apps share Matter devices, but it does not eliminate hub requirements: each Matter-certified app needs its own compatible hub. If you are considering a second app, check its device support, hub hardware, and remote-control path rather than assuming that sharing a device makes the platforms interchangeable.

How to check whether these limits affect your setup

  1. Identify the device and protocol. Confirm the exact model and whether it uses Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, or a manufacturer-linked integration.
  2. Check required hardware and network settings. For Matter, verify that your hub supports the device’s connection type; a mixed Thread and Wi-Fi setup requires a Thread border router. Confirm IPv6 is enabled.
  3. Confirm the controls you need. Look for the specific functions—such as dimming or color changes—in the compatibility details and manufacturer app, rather than relying on a general compatibility label.
  4. Verify automation coverage. Match the desired starter, condition, and action against Google’s current supported list.
  5. Plan for local and remote use. Decide whether control must work while you are away and account for the internet and cloud path used for remote Matter commands.

For a Matter setup that specifically needs a Thread-capable Google hub, Google lists the Nest Hub (2nd gen) as one example. Choosing a suitable hub can address a protocol requirement; it does not add missing third-party controls or automation support.
