If you need to leave a Google Forms quiz in locked mode, contact your teacher or proctor and follow the school’s instructions. Google says leaving can notify the teacher, but its help page does not give universal student-facing exit steps. Don’t assume closing the tab, restarting the Chromebook, or trying a workaround will safely end the attempt.
What happens when you leave a locked quiz?
Locked mode is a Google Forms quiz setting for Chromebooks. While it is active, students cannot browse other websites or open other apps, and some extensions and keyboard shortcuts are disabled. The quiz collects email addresses and is restricted to the school’s domain.
Google says the teacher receives an email notification if a student exits the quiz or opens another tab. If the student reopens the quiz within 30 days, the teacher is notified. After 30 days from the last time the quiz was opened, Google says no notification will be sent. Quiz availability may also be limited to scheduled hours. How to leave or resume an active quiz
Ask your teacher or proctor how to end the attempt or resume it later. Google’s help page does not specify a universal on-screen exit control, and the available controls may vary by form or device configuration. The school can tell you how to proceed without risking confusion about whether the attempt has ended.

Why a locked quiz may not start
Google’s requirements include a school-managed Chromebook for each student, a school Google Account, and Chrome OS 75 or later. These are the requirements listed on Google’s current help pages; software requirements can change.
- Check the account: Sign in to the Chromebook with the school Google Account associated with the quiz.
- Check the device: The Chromebook must be managed by the school. If you are unsure, ask school staff to confirm its management status.
- Update Chrome OS: Install available system updates, then try opening the quiz again.
- Check quiz timing: If the quiz is available only during scheduled hours, try again during the time set by the teacher.
- Ask the teacher: If the quiz still will not open, contact the teacher or school administrator. Google’s setup and troubleshooting guidance is on its locked mode help page.
If you see a permissions error
Confirm that you are signed in with the correct work or school account. Google notes that the form owner may need to grant access. See Google’s guidance for forms that require permission.

Accessibility needs and approved accommodations
If the device or quiz interface does not meet an accessibility need, tell the teacher or school administrator and ask for an approved accommodation. Google lists ChromeVox, high contrast mode, fullscreen magnifier, and docked magnifier among the Chromebook accessibility features recommended for locked mode.
