Yes. You can close a published Google Form manually, automatically at a chosen date and time, or after a chosen number of responses. To prevent repeat submissions from the same signed-in account, use the separate Limit to 1 response setting.

Choose the control that matches your goal

Control What it limits How it closes Important qualification
Turn off Accepting responses All new submissions Manually Respondents can still open the published form and see its closure message. Google Forms Help
Set close date or response limit All submissions to the form Automatically, at a selected date/time or response count Simultaneous submissions can exceed the selected count. Google Forms Help
Limit to 1 response Repeat submissions by a respondent’s Google Account Restricts the respondent to one submission Respondents must sign in to a Google Account. Google Forms Help

Set a maximum number of responses

  1. Open the published form.
  2. At the upper right, open Published.
  3. Under Accepting responses, select Set close date or response limit.
  4. Choose After a number of responses and enter the maximum.
  5. If the form already has responses, enter a limit greater than its current response count.
  6. Optionally edit the message respondents see after the form closes.

Google’s instructions say the form accepts responses regardless of the configured limit if multiple people respond at exactly the same time. Treat this as an automatic cutoff for approximate capacity, not a guaranteed hard stop for a process where every slot must be protected. Google Forms Help

Close the form at a deadline or manually

In the same Published controls, choose Set close date or response limit to select a closing date and time. For an immediate manual close, turn off Accepting responses. Google says respondents may still access the published form after it closes, but they see the closure message. Google Forms Help

Allow only one response per person

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Expand Responses.
  3. Turn on Limit to 1 response.

This setting requires respondents to sign in with a Google Account. Google says their usernames are not recorded unless the form owner turns on email collection. It prevents repeat submissions under an account; it does not set a maximum total for the form. Google Forms Help

What if the response-limit option is missing?

A Google Docs Editors Community announcement dated January 23, 2026, described automatic closing by date/time or response count as rolling out to personal Google Account users, Workspace Individual subscribers, and Google Workspace customers; the feature was off by default. Google’s current Help Center describes the controls, but the interface may vary during rollout or change. Check the form’s Published controls; if the option is not there, use manual closure where available and check the current Google Forms interface again. Google Docs Editors Community announcement

Don’t confuse your form’s cap with Google’s service capacity

Google’s service-level capacity is distinct from the response count you choose to close an individual form. Google says that starting in September 2026, a form can receive up to 500,000 responses and has a 1 GB total storage limit. These are service figures, not recommended settings for a form or guarantees that all response features remain available at those totals. Google Forms Help

Google also lists response-feature thresholds: summaries may be unavailable above 50,000 responses, Sheets synchronization may be affected above 100,000, and question or individual response views may be unavailable above 10,000. These thresholds concern features, not the owner-selected closure limit. Google Forms Help
