If your Google Fitbit Edge is not recording heart rate or sleep, first check that it is charged and snug against your skin, then refresh the Google Health app and sync the device. If the problem continues, restart the Edge by holding its side button for 10 seconds. The Edge help page confirms this restart method but does not provide a separate Edge-specific heart-rate or sleep troubleshooting menu.
Start with fit, skin contact, and charge
The back of the tracker needs to touch your skin, and the band should feel secure without being uncomfortably tight. Google’s general Fitbit guidance recommends wearing the tracker on top of your wrist. For heart-rate readings outside exercise, place it about a finger’s width above the wrist bone. For sleep-duration tracking, Google recommends positioning it about two to three finger widths above the wrist bone. Wear it in a wristband while sleeping, not in a clip or pendant. These are general Fitbit recommendations, not a distinct Edge-only fit procedure. Google’s guidance on improving Fitbit metrics.
Charge the device and wear it through a full day and night before judging whether tracking has resumed. Google says most metrics require at least three hours of quality sleep; a short or highly disrupted session may not produce them. Critically low battery can also prevent sleep stages or a sleep score from appearing. Google’s metric guidance and sleep-stage troubleshooting.

Heart rate is missing on both the device and phone
Make sure the Edge is charged and sitting securely against your skin. If the fit is good and the reading still does not appear, restart it using the Edge-specific method below. General Fitbit documentation says heart-rate tracking can be turned off in settings, but the available Edge guidance does not verify a heart-rate toggle or its menu path. Do not use instructions for another Fitbit model as if they applied to the Edge.

Heart rate appears on the Edge but not in Google Health
This points more strongly to a connection or sync problem than to a failed sensor. Open Google Health, pull down to refresh, and check whether the app updates. If it does not, force quit the app, restart your phone’s Bluetooth connection, and manually sync the Fitbit. Google’s Fitbit syncing help covers connection recovery.
No sleep session appears
Check charge and fit, then look in the Sleep tab in Google Health and pull down to refresh. If the session is still absent, try the app, Bluetooth, and manual-sync steps above. Wrist-based Fitbit devices automatically detect sleep when worn to bed. Google says the device records sleep when the body is completely at rest and has not moved for about an hour, so movement or a disrupted night may affect detection. Google’s sleep-tracking guidance.

A sleep session appears, but stages or a score do not
A sleep log and sleep-stage data are different: stages are calculated using movement and heart-rate data, so a session may be recorded without stages or a score. Google lists inconsistent heart-rate sensing—such as from a loose fit or a sleeping position that interferes with sensing—and critically low battery as possible reasons. Adjust the fit, charge the Edge, and allow a longer, less disrupted sleep session before checking again. Google’s sleep-stage troubleshooting.

Readings appear but seem inconsistent
Check that the tracker remains in skin contact and is positioned as recommended. Readings can differ from those of other devices because measurement technologies vary; physiology and the activity being done can also affect accuracy. Restart the Google Fitbit Edge
- Press and hold the Edge’s side button for 10 seconds.
- Release the button when the device forces a restart, then give it time to reconnect and resume tracking.
- Check the device and Google Health again. If data appears on the Edge but not in the app, continue with the sync checks rather than assuming the sensor has failed.
The 10-second side-button restart is documented in the Google Fitbit Edge device guide. The guide does not specify a separate Edge heart-rate toggle path.
