For most Android owners, configure Google Find Hub. It covers the broadest mix of Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and compatible tracker tags. If you use a Galaxy phone, tablet, watch, earbuds or SmartTag, also enable Samsung Find (and, where applicable, SmartThings Find) because Samsung-account features and device support are separate. Running both is sensible when you own Samsung hardware; there is no official head-to-head evidence showing that either service is faster, more accurate or better covered in every location.

What Google Find Hub and Samsung Find actually do

Both services associate a device with an account so you can view an estimated location and take recovery actions from another device or a web browser. They are preparation tools: the account must be signed in and the finding settings must be enabled before the phone, tablet, watch or tag disappears.

Google Find Hub

Google Find Hub is Android’s account-linked finding service. Google documents support for Android phones and tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and compatible Bluetooth tracker tags. A Google Account is normally enough to make a device eligible, but you should confirm that the device appears in Google Play and that the location and finding controls are on.

Google’s Android Help describes the service as a way to “find, secure or erase” a lost Android device. You can use the Find Hub app, the web interface at android.com/find, or guest sign-in on another Android phone. Recovery controls include locating, ringing, marking a device as lost and erasing it.

Samsung Find and SmartThings Find

Samsung Find and SmartThings Find focus on Galaxy hardware and Samsung-account features. Samsung’s documented phone and tablet controls include locating, ringing, locking, tracking location updates and erasing data. Samsung Find also has sharing features, while SmartThings Find uses SmartThings membership for some family and device-sharing functions. The two Samsung services should not be treated as one interchangeable device list.

Samsung support varies by model, country, region and carrier. Samsung’s US instructions and its UK Offline Finding page do not describe exactly the same behavior, particularly for powered-off devices, so check the support page for your model and country.

Which service should you choose?

Choose Google Find Hub as your baseline

Use Find Hub if you own a mixture of Android brands, a Wear OS watch, Android headphones or tracker tags that are not limited to Galaxy hardware. Its Android-wide scope means one Google account can cover devices from different manufacturers. It is also the service to prepare when you want the documented Google network-finding choices and, on eligible models, powered-off finding.

Add Samsung Find on Galaxy hardware

Galaxy owners should enable Samsung Find as well as Google Find Hub. Samsung’s service may expose Samsung-specific controls, sharing and SmartTag support that a Google-only setup does not. Keeping both enabled gives you two account paths to check rather than forcing every device into one ecosystem.

Do not select on unproven speed or coverage claims

The official help pages do not provide a controlled comparison of response time, recovery rate, participating-device density, city-by-city coverage or accuracy. A recommendation based on ecosystem compatibility and correct setup is supportable; a claim that one network is universally faster or more reliable is not.

Set up Google Find Hub before anything goes missing

  1. Confirm the Google Account. On the phone or tablet, verify the account you will be able to access during an emergency. Google says the device should remain visible in Google Play; an account that was removed or a device that is no longer associated will complicate recovery.
  2. Turn on Location. Open the device’s Location setting and leave it enabled if you want current or recent location estimates.
  3. Allow the device to be located. In Android settings, open the Google finding controls and confirm Allow device to be located (wording can vary by software version).
  4. Choose an offline-finding mode. Google offers options with no network assistance, network finding in busy places only, or network finding everywhere. The more participation you allow, the more your device can use encrypted location reports from nearby Android devices; review the privacy and battery implications before choosing.
  5. Set a screen lock. Google requires a PIN, pattern or password for network-assisted finding. A swipe-only lock is not an adequate substitute for this requirement.
  6. Prepare for supported powered-off finding. On models that support it, Google says Bluetooth and Location must have been on when the device is shut down and an appropriate network mode must be selected. Google gives the Pixel 8 series as an example. Do not assume that every Android phone remains findable after power-off.
  7. Test access while the phone is in your hand. Sign in to android.com/find and open the Find Hub app. Check that the device name, battery information and map view appear. If someone else may help, learn the guest-sign-in route on another Android phone and make sure you can complete your two-step-verification recovery process.

Menu labels differ between Android versions and manufacturers. If a setting is absent, check the exact model’s support documentation rather than assuming that a hidden switch is disabled.

Set up Samsung Find or SmartThings Find on a Galaxy device

  1. Add the Samsung Account. Sign in to the account that you can recover independently of the missing phone. Keep its recovery email, phone number or backup codes available.
  2. Enable the core finding switch. In the Galaxy settings, open the lost-device protection section and turn on Allow this phone (or tablet) to be found.
  3. Send the last location. Enable Send last location so the service can retain the final reported position when the battery is low or connectivity is about to end.
  4. Enable Offline finding. Turn on Offline finding in the same lost-device protection area if your model and region support it. Samsung’s supported families include selected Galaxy phones, tablets, watches, buds and SmartTag products; the list changes over time.
  5. Check the network requirement. Samsung’s US phone-and-tablet instructions say the documented finding flow requires the device to be powered on and connected to a stable network. If it is powered off, those instructions provide only the last known location.
  6. Practice the web sign-in. Open Samsung Find or SmartThings Find before an emergency and note which device list appears. A feature or share setting in one Samsung service does not automatically transfer to the other.
  7. Review regional eligibility. Samsung states that services can vary by country, region and carrier. Use the support page for your model in your country to confirm Offline Finding and any powered-off behavior.

How offline finding works—and what it cannot promise

Offline finding is not the same as a phone transmitting a continuous live position without power or connectivity. It generally combines an encrypted recent location from the missing device with short-range Bluetooth detections reported by participating nearby devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation What may be available Important limitation
Device online and powered on A current or recently refreshed location, subject to signal and settings Indoor, underground or obstructed locations can be inaccurate.
Device offline but powered on Encrypted recent location or a network-assisted report if the relevant offline setting was enabled A report may be delayed and is not guaranteed in a low-density area.
Supported Google phone powered off On eligible models, Find Hub may locate the phone for several hours after shutdown when Bluetooth and Location were on and a network mode was selected The Pixel 8 example does not establish support for all Android models.
Samsung phone or tablet powered off Samsung US documents the last known location Samsung’s UK page lists Offline Finding for specific device families, so country and model must be checked.
Tracker tag offline A nearby participating device may relay an encrypted sighting Node devices do not necessarily provide an exact position; Samsung explicitly notes this for Find Node devices.

Google’s general location guidance says GPS can be accurate to around 20 metres, while a mobile-tower estimate may be accurate only to a few thousand metres. GPS can also be wrong indoors or underground. Those figures describe location estimation, not a Google-versus-Samsung performance result.

What to do when a phone, tablet or watch is missing

  1. Open the matching account. Use Find Hub with the Google Account attached to the device, or Samsung Find/SmartThings Find with the Samsung Account. If both services were prepared, check both device lists; one may show a newer report or a different accessory.
  2. Select the correct device. Confirm the model, battery state and last update before acting. A stale timestamp can explain why the map does not match the device’s current position.
  3. Try the ring function nearby. Google documents a five-minute full-volume sound. Samsung documents a one-minute ring even when the phone is muted or vibrating. These are vendor-stated durations, not evidence that one service performs better.
  4. Lock or mark it lost. Add a callback number or message where the service allows it. This protects the screen while preserving a chance that an honest finder can contact you.
  5. Interpret the map cautiously. A circle or old pin is an estimate, not proof that the device is still at that exact address. Do not enter private property or confront anyone based on a map location.
  6. Report suspected theft. Samsung advises informing authorities and letting them retrieve a stolen phone or tablet. Provide the map information, serial number and IMEI rather than attempting recovery yourself.
  7. Erase only when the data risk justifies it. Google says erasing permanently deletes device data and that a factory-reset device is no longer available in Find Hub. Samsung provides an erase-data action for prepared devices. Once erased, you generally lose the ability to continue locating the device through that service.
  8. Call the carrier. Ask about suspending service and, if appropriate, IMEI blocking. Google notes that a carrier can use the IMEI to disable a device; Samsung also recommends contacting the carrier when a phone remains missing.

Family sharing and web access

Google’s guest mode is useful when your own phone is missing: a friend can open Find Hub on another Android device and sign in temporarily. You still need the account credentials and a way through two-step verification.

Using tracker tags for keys and bags

A tracker tag is optional. You do not need one to find a phone, tablet or watch. Tags are useful for keys, luggage, bicycles and similar belongings when the tag is compatible with the finding network.

Google supports compatible Bluetooth tracker tags through Find Hub. Ultra-wideband (UWB) directional finding works only when both the phone and tag support UWB. Google’s examples of UWB-capable phones include Pixel 8 series and later (Pro models only), Samsung Galaxy S21 series and later (Plus and Ultra models only), and selected Motorola Edge and Razr models. Compatibility remains tag- and model-specific.

Samsung’s UK SmartThings Find information lists Galaxy SmartTag families for Offline Finding. Samsung says a SmartTag must first be registered in SmartThings before direct use or family sharing. Check the current regional compatibility list before buying a tag. Google advises against using tracker tags to track pets or to locate stolen items.

Troubleshooting common failures

The device does not appear

  • Confirm you are signed in to the same Google or Samsung Account that was on the device.
  • For Google, verify that the device is still visible in Google Play and that Allow device to be located is enabled.
  • For Samsung, confirm the Samsung Account and all three lost-device controls: allow finding, send last location and Offline finding.
  • Check whether the model, carrier or country is excluded from a feature.

The map shows an old location

  • The phone may be powered off, out of battery, indoors, underground or outside network range.
  • Offline reports can be delayed. Treat the timestamp as important evidence, not a live guarantee.
  • Do not infer network coverage or speed from one missing-device incident; no controlled comparison establishes a universal winner.

Remote actions do not complete

  • A ring, lock or erase command needs the device to receive it. Leave the command queued while the device is offline, then refresh later.
  • Erasure is irreversible and can remove the device from future finding. Use it only after considering the likelihood of recovery and the sensitivity of the data.
  • If account sign-in is blocked by two-step verification, use the recovery method or backup codes prepared before the loss.

Offline finding is missing from settings

Offline options depend on hardware, software version, account state and region. Update the device where practical, then consult the current Google or Samsung support page for the exact model. Do not substitute a similarly named setting from another service.

A practical configuration for most households

  • Every Android phone and tablet: Google Account, Location, device-finding permission, a strong screen lock and a tested sign-in to Find Hub.
  • Every Galaxy phone or tablet: the same Google setup plus Samsung Account, Samsung lost-device protection, Send last location and Offline finding where supported.
  • Wearables and earbuds: verify that they appear in the relevant device list while connected, then check whether the manufacturer limits finding to a last location.
  • Tags: register each tag in the ecosystem it supports, test a nearby ring, and document which account owns it.
  • Household recovery: store account recovery methods and IMEI or serial numbers somewhere accessible when your primary phone is unavailable.

This arrangement does not promise recovery. It ensures that, when a device disappears, you have the widest account and ecosystem coverage your hardware supports without pretending that either network has a proven universal advantage.
