Google Earth’s web flight simulator is a lightweight, experimental way to explore the globe from above. Microsoft Flight Simulator is a dedicated simulation product with deeper aircraft systems, route planning and in-flight information—especially in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Choose Google Earth when you want a quick, casual look at places on a desktop. Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator when you want structured flights, aircraft procedures, weather, charts and hardware support.

Google Earth and Microsoft Flight Simulator solve different problems

The two products both let you move an aircraft over a map, but they are not equivalent simulators. Google describes its current Google Earth web feature as an experimental simulator for casual exploration. Its flight model is simplified and its scenery is Google Earth imagery and streamed 3D buildings. Microsoft Flight Simulator is built as a standalone flight-simulation experience, with aircraft systems, navigation and planning features designed to make a flight feel more complete.

Google’s own developer documentation states that the Earth simulator is “designed for casual exploration rather than high-fidelity aerodynamic training.” That qualification matters: it is a browser feature for seeing the world from the air, not evidence that the software reproduces real aircraft performance or qualifies as pilot training.

Microsoft Flight Simulator also should not be treated as a substitute for certified instruction. Its route, weather and checklist tools are simulation features. They can help you learn the vocabulary and workflow of a flight, but they do not replace an instructor, approved aircraft or operational procedures.

What Google Earth’s current web simulator actually is

The web simulator is a mode inside Google Earth on a computer. It uses the Earth map as the environment and lets you steer an aircraft with keyboard and mouse input. Google labels it experimental, so the interface, availability and behavior are not guaranteed to remain unchanged.

Desktop web access only

Google says the feature is available on desktop web. It is not supported on phones or tablets, and it is not the same as a flight-simulator mode in the Google Earth mobile app. If you open Google Earth on a mobile device and cannot find the tool, that is an availability limitation rather than a missing setting.

Imagery loads while you fly

The simulator streams buildings and high-resolution imagery as the aircraft moves. A fast connection and moderate speed give the environment more time to appear. At extreme speeds, or on a low-bandwidth connection, you may see temporary loading delays or less detail while the scene catches up.

What the physics imply

Simplified physics make the feature easy to start but limit what it can teach. The controls let you change thrust, pitch and bank, yet the experience is not intended to reproduce the aerodynamic behavior, cockpit systems or operational workload of a real aircraft.

How to start and fly in Google Earth on the web

  1. Open Google Earth on a desktop computer.
  2. Choose Explore Earth.
  3. Open Tools, then select Flight simulator.
  4. When the simulator opens, use the Map and Satellite choices to decide whether you want the abstract map or satellite imagery as your basemap.
  5. Use Page Up to increase thrust and Page Down to decrease it.
  6. Use the Up and Down arrows to pitch the aircraft, and the Left and Right arrows to bank.
  7. Click inside the simulation to toggle between mouse-guided control and keyboard control.

If the aircraft hits terrain, Google’s simulator pauses and offers a restart at safe coordinates and altitude. That restart behavior is useful for exploration, but it is another indication that this is an approachable game-like feature rather than a complete training environment.

Do not confuse Google’s web and desktop simulators

Google documents a separate desktop application experience. The desktop help page describes starting through Tools → Enter Flight Simulator or a keyboard shortcut, choosing either a Cirrus SR22 or an F-16, selecting a starting location and configuring a joystick or mouse and keyboard.

Those aircraft choices belong to the documented desktop simulator. They should not be presented as evidence that the current Google Earth web feature offers an SR22 or F-16. The web documentation instead focuses on the browser workflow, keyboard shortcuts, mouse guidance and streamed Earth scenery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The desktop page also describes a heads-up display and desktop-specific controls. If you are following instructions, first identify whether you are using the installed desktop application or Google Earth in a browser; menu names, aircraft choices and input options differ.

What Microsoft Flight Simulator adds

Microsoft Flight Simulator is designed around an entire simulated flight rather than simply moving over a map. Aircraft depth varies, but the product provides a larger set of tools for preparing, conducting and reviewing a flight. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024’s Electronic Flight Bag is the clearest documented example.

Route and airport planning in the 2024 EFB

In the EFB, you can create a route, choose departure and destination airports, set a cruising altitude, select runways and procedures, and review the resulting plan. You can also configure fuel and payload, inspect airport weather and charts, and use checklists and other flight information during the session.

The route can be sent to the aircraft’s avionics or filed with the simulator’s in-sim air-traffic-control system. Microsoft cautions that automatically generated routes are not always correct. Review the route before using it in the simulator, particularly when a procedure, runway or airway choice does not match what you intended.

Why the EFB changes the comparison

Google Earth’s web documentation centers on basic flight controls and exploration. The EFB gives Microsoft Flight Simulator a planning layer: you decide where to depart, how to get there, what altitude and payload to use, and which airport information to consult. That makes Microsoft’s product better suited to users who want a repeatable flight plan rather than an aerial tour.

Version boundary

The EFB capabilities described above apply specifically to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Do not assume that an older release, a different platform build or every aircraft exposes an identical interface. Check the support information for the exact edition you own.

Controls and hardware: keyboard, mouse or flight peripherals?

Google Earth

The web simulator documents keyboard shortcuts and mouse-guided control, so no dedicated flight controller is required. A standard keyboard is enough to change thrust, pitch and bank. A mouse can provide guided input after you click inside the simulation.

That setup is convenient for a short exploration session. It is less expressive than a physical stick because you are translating flight inputs through keys or pointer movement, and the simplified model does not demand the same continuous control as a detailed simulator.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Microsoft lists joysticks, yokes and rudder pedals among supported or recommended peripherals. You can begin with keyboard, controller or the hardware already connected to your computer or console, then add a joystick when you want more direct pitch, roll and throttle control.

A joystick is therefore an optional way to improve physical control in Microsoft Flight Simulator, not a requirement for Google Earth’s browser feature. Hardware compatibility and button mapping depend on the platform and the particular peripheral.

Graphics, loading and connection trade-offs

Google Earth’s streaming behavior

Google Earth’s web simulator obtains buildings and detailed imagery dynamically. The visual result can be impressive over recognizable places, but detail is dependent on what has loaded. Flying very fast reduces the time available to stream the next area, while a slow connection can leave scenery temporarily incomplete.

If the scene looks sparse, slow down and allow the area to load before judging the imagery. Closing other bandwidth-heavy tabs can also help, although Google’s documentation does not promise a specific speed or bandwidth threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s variable requirements

Microsoft publishes minimum, recommended and ideal PC requirement tiers, but those figures are tied to a particular version and configuration. They are not a universal performance guarantee across every aircraft, resolution, graphics preset or platform. Confirm the requirements for the exact edition and device before buying or installing.

Microsoft also describes console and cloud-gaming availability where supported. Cloud access and catalog inclusion vary by region and can change, so treat platform availability as an edition-specific question rather than a permanent feature of every Microsoft Flight Simulator release.

Which simulator should you choose?

Choose Google Earth when exploration is the goal

  • You want to look at a city, landmark, coastline or familiar neighborhood from above.
  • You need a browser-based experience with no simulator-specific hardware.
  • You are comfortable with simplified physics and a feature labeled experimental.
  • You can use a desktop computer and have a connection that can stream map imagery.

Choose Microsoft Flight Simulator when procedure and planning matter

  • You want to build routes between airports instead of freely roaming over a map.
  • You want fuel, payload, altitude, runway, procedure, chart and weather controls in one workflow.
  • You plan to use a joystick, yoke or pedals for physical controls.
  • You are willing to check edition, platform and hardware requirements before installation.
  • You want an aircraft-focused simulation whose depth extends beyond sightseeing.

Use both for different purposes

There is no need to treat the choice as permanent. Google Earth is useful for quickly locating terrain, cities and visual landmarks. Microsoft Flight Simulator is better for turning a route into a structured simulated flight. The products complement each other when you want both geographic context and a more complete cockpit workflow.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming the web version includes the desktop aircraft list

The Cirrus SR22 and F-16 instructions come from Google’s desktop help page. Keep them separate from the web simulator’s documented controls and do not promise those aircraft in a browser session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting real-world aerodynamic training

Google explicitly positions the web simulator for casual exploration, not high-fidelity aerodynamic training. Microsoft Flight Simulator offers more systems and planning depth, but it is still simulation software. Neither product should be represented as a substitute for certified flight training or operational guidance.

Trusting an automatically generated route without checking it

Microsoft warns that EFB-generated routes may be incorrect. Inspect the airports, runways, procedures, altitude and other route elements before sending a plan to avionics or filing it with in-sim ATC.

Assuming mobile support

Google’s web feature is desktop-only. A phone or tablet cannot be used as a supported entry point for that simulator, even though Google Earth itself has mobile apps.

Interpreting a loading delay as a simulator failure

In Google Earth, temporary delays can result from streamed scenery, extreme speed or low bandwidth. Reduce speed and wait for the next area to load. If the aircraft has collided with terrain, use the simulator’s restart option rather than trying to continue from the paused crash state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision checklist

  • Device: Do you have a desktop browser for Google Earth, or a platform that supports the Microsoft edition you want?
  • Purpose: Are you sightseeing, or do you want a planned airport-to-airport flight?
  • Depth: Is simplified physics acceptable, or do you want aircraft systems and an EFB?
  • Controls: Will keyboard and mouse work, or do you want a joystick, yoke or pedals?
  • Connectivity: Can your connection stream Google Earth scenery reliably?
  • Version: Have you checked the current edition, platform and requirements instead of relying on an old guide?
  • Expectations: Are you treating the software as entertainment and simulation rather than real-world pilot training?

Bottom line

Google Earth’s web flight simulator is the faster, simpler choice for casual aerial exploration: open it on a desktop, use keyboard or mouse controls and fly over streamed Earth imagery. Microsoft Flight Simulator is the stronger choice for a complete simulated flight, particularly in the 2024 version with its EFB route, fuel, payload, charts, weather and checklist tools. The deciding factor is not which product has an aircraft on a map; it is whether you want to explore a place or manage a planned flight.
