Short answer: the @ sign opens Google Docs’ insertion menu; a smart chip is one of the structured items you can insert from that menu. A people smart chip is what many users casually call an “@ mention.” The two terms describe different parts of the same workflow, not competing features.
The distinction in one sentence
When you type @ in a Google Doc, Docs opens a menu of suggested items. You then choose a result—such as a person, file, date, Calendar event, or place. The chosen result appears as a smart chip, a compact reference that can reveal related information and actions when someone hovers over or clicks it.
That means “@ mention” usually describes the action of opening the menu and selecting a person, while “smart chip” describes the inserted object. Google’s documentation refers to people references as people smart chips; it does not present “@ mentions” as a separate feature that competes with smart chips.

The @ menu is an entry point. Type @ anywhere you can edit a Google Doc, and Docs displays suggestions for items you can add. You can also open the insertion controls through the document’s menus, but the keyboard character is the fastest route.

Suggestions are filtered as you continue typing. For example, entering a person’s name or email narrows the list to people; entering part of a file name or a related keyword narrows it to matching files. Selecting a suggestion inserts the corresponding chip at the cursor.
The menu is broader than people references. Google describes it as a way to link to people, files, and events and to add other items to a document. Smart chips are one category in that menu, alongside other insertable items.
What a smart chip is
A smart chip is a structured, in-document reference rather than ordinary text. It represents an object that Docs can recognize and describe—for example, a collaborator, a Google file, a date, a Calendar event, or a place.
Recommended Free Tools
Instead of displaying only a name or a pasted URL, a chip can provide a contextual popup. The popup’s contents depend on the chip type. Hovering or clicking can expose information, a preview, or suggested actions, allowing a reader to inspect the reference without leaving the document immediately.
People chips
A people chip identifies a person associated with a Google account. To insert one, type @, search by the person’s name or email address, and select the matching result. Typing @me can insert yourself.
A person chip is useful when a document needs an obvious owner, reviewer, participant, or contact. Selecting or hovering over it can show available profile information and actions associated with that person. The exact actions depend on the account and Google Workspace context.
File chips
A file chip points to a Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file. Type @, enter part of the file name or a related keyword, and choose the file from the suggestions.

The result is a recognizable file reference inside the document. Opening the chip can provide file details or a preview and can let a collaborator open the referenced file, subject to that file’s permissions.
Date chips
Date chips turn a written date into a structured date reference. Google documents forms such as @today, @tomorrow, @yesterday, @date, a specific date, and relative expressions such as @next tuesday.
The date is displayed in the language of the person who added the chip. Google also states that the date remains the same for collaborators across time zones. In other words, a date chip is not recalculated into each viewer’s local calendar date as the document moves between regions.
Calendar-event chips
An event chip represents a Google Calendar event. Insert it through the @ menu and select the event suggestion. The chip can show event information in the document.

Place chips
A place chip represents a location. You can create one from the insertion menu or from a Google Maps link.
Depending on the location and the available information, its popup can show a Maps preview, open the place in Google Maps, or provide directions. This makes a place chip more useful than a plain address when readers need to inspect or navigate to the location.

| Available references | People, files, dates, Calendar events, places, and other items offered by the current Docs interface. | People, Docs/Sheets/Slides files, dates, Calendar events, and places listed by Google. |
| Reader benefit | Helps you find and insert the right item quickly. | Provides contextual information, previews, or actions when hovered over or clicked. |
| Access effect | Selecting a person from the menu does not change the document’s sharing settings. | A people chip identifies someone but does not grant that person access to the document. |
How to add a people “@ mention” correctly
- Place the cursor. Click where the person reference should appear in the Google Doc.
- Open the menu. Type
@. Suggestions appear next to the cursor. - Search. Continue typing the person’s name or email address to narrow the results.
- Select the person. Choose the intended result. Docs inserts a people smart chip rather than plain text.
- Check the reference. Hover over or click the chip to inspect the information and actions available in your account.
- Share separately when needed. If the person must read or edit the document, use the document’s sharing controls to grant the appropriate permission.
Typing @me is a shortcut for inserting your own people chip. It can be useful for assigning yourself as an owner or identifying your participation without searching for your account.

How to insert a file, date, event, or place chip
Insert a file reference
- Put the cursor where the file reference belongs.
- Type
@and enter part of the file name or a related keyword. - Select the matching Docs, Sheets, or Slides file.
- Open the chip when you need its preview or file actions, keeping in mind that the referenced file has its own access rules.
Insert a date
- Place the cursor in the document.
- Type a supported expression such as
@today,@tomorrow,@yesterday,@next tuesday, or a specific date. - Choose the date suggestion to convert it into a date chip.
- Use the chip’s date display as the shared reference. Collaborators see the date in the language of the person who created it, and Google says the date stays the same across time zones.
Insert a Calendar event
- Type
@at the location where the event should appear. - Search the suggestions for the relevant Calendar event.
- Select the event to insert its chip.
- Open the chip for event details. If a video meeting is starting soon or already in progress, a Join action may be available.
Insert a place
- Use the
@menu and choose the place suggestion, or insert a Google Maps link that Docs can convert into a place chip. - Select the location.
- Hover over or click the chip to view a Maps preview, open the location in Google Maps, or request directions when those actions are offered.
Does mentioning someone give them access?
No. Google Docs Editors Help explicitly states: “When you mention another user in a smart chip, they don’t automatically get access to your document.” A people chip is an identification and context feature, not a sharing command.
To give the person access, open the document’s sharing controls and add them with the role you want them to have, such as viewer, commenter, or editor. The chip and the permission change are separate operations. This separation also means you can identify someone in a document without making the document visible to that person.
What collaborators see
Chip behavior is designed to preserve a shared reference while exposing useful context on demand. A collaborator can hover over or click a chip to inspect details or available actions, but the exact popup depends on the chip type and the account environment.
- People: identity-related information and available person actions.
- Files: a reference to the selected Docs, Sheets, or Slides file, with preview or opening options subject to permissions.
- Dates: the date in the language used by the person who added it, with the same date shown across time zones.
- Events: event information and, in qualifying cases, a way to join an associated video meeting.
- Places: a location preview, Google Maps opening action, or directions.
Because chips point to live Google objects, what a collaborator can open or do is still governed by the object’s permissions and by the features available in the current Docs interface.
When to use a chip instead of plain text
Use a people chip for responsibility or participation
Choose a people chip when the reader benefits from knowing which account a name represents or from opening the person’s available profile actions. It is clearer for assignments, review ownership, meeting participants, and contact lists than an unlinked name.
Use a file chip for a working document
A file chip is appropriate when readers need to open a related spreadsheet, presentation, or document. It keeps the reference recognizable and discoverable inside the surrounding explanation.

Use a date chip for deadlines and milestones
A date chip is useful for a deadline, launch date, review date, or meeting date that should remain an explicit shared date. The cross-time-zone behavior avoids silently shifting the date for people in other regions.
Use an event chip for scheduled activities
An event chip fits agendas, project plans, and meeting notes where readers may need event details or a possible video-meeting join action.

“The @ symbol and a smart chip are two alternatives.”
They are not alternatives. The symbol is the trigger for the insertion menu; the chip is the selected result. Describe the action as “open the @ menu” and the result as “insert a people smart chip” or another specific chip type.
“An @ mention is always a notification.”
The documented behavior is insertion of a people reference. Whether any notification or other account-specific behavior occurs is separate from the chip itself and should not be assumed from the symbol alone.
“Mentioning a person shares the file.”
It does not. Use the document’s sharing controls if the person needs access.
“A date chip changes for every viewer’s time zone.”
Google states that collaborators see the same date across time zones. The display language can differ because it follows the language of the person who added the chip.

“A place chip is only a decorated URL.”
A place chip can provide a preview, open Google Maps, or offer directions. Those location actions are the reason to use it instead of leaving a bare address or link.
Troubleshooting the @ workflow
The intended person does not appear
Continue typing the person’s full name or email address and verify the spelling. If the result still is not offered, insert the person’s name as ordinary text and use the document’s normal sharing controls separately; the menu can only suggest accounts available to the current Docs environment.
The wrong file or event is suggested
Enter more of the file name or a more specific keyword before selecting a result. For events, distinguish similarly named meetings by checking the event information shown in the suggestion or chip.
A collaborator cannot open the referenced file
The chip does not override the referenced file’s permissions. The owner of that file must share it with the collaborator, independently of the permissions on the document containing the chip.
The popup offers fewer actions than expected
Chip actions vary by type, account, object permissions, and the current Docs interface. A people chip, date chip, event chip, and place chip do not expose the same controls. Treat the actions actually shown in the popup as authoritative.
The menu labels look different
Google can change interface labels and suggestions as Docs is updated or as account context changes. The underlying distinction remains: type @ to browse insertable items, then select a smart chip or another offered item.
Precise terminology for documentation and training
For a user guide, write “Type @ to open the menu, then select a person smart chip.” This wording tells readers both what to do and what they will insert.
Use “@ mention” when you are describing everyday user language or specifically the act of selecting a person through the @ menu. If the result matters, name the result: “The person appears as a people smart chip.” Avoid presenting “@ mentions” and “smart chips” as rival systems, because that implies a product distinction Google’s documentation does not make.
Which feature should you choose?
| Your goal | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Identify a colleague or owner | People smart chip | It provides a structured person reference and related actions. |
| Point readers to a working Google file | File smart chip | It presents a recognizable file reference with preview or opening options. |
| Record a shared deadline or milestone | Date smart chip | It preserves the same date for collaborators across time zones. |
| Connect notes to a scheduled meeting | Calendar-event smart chip | It exposes event information and may provide a video-meeting Join action when the event qualifies. |
| Help readers find a physical destination | Place smart chip | It can show a map preview, open Google Maps, or provide directions. |
The practical decision is therefore not “@ mention or smart chip?” Use the @ menu whenever it is the quickest way to find an item, and choose the chip type that matches the object you want readers to understand or act on.
