Google announced a Discover-specific update on February 5, 2026, intended to show more locally relevant articles, reduce sensationalism and clickbait, and surface more in-depth, original, timely work from sources with expertise in the subject. The rollout began with English-language users in the United States; a report said it was complete on February 27. Google did not forecast a measurable traffic impact, and its announcement does not establish that expansion to every country and language has since finished.
What changed in Google Discover?
Google said it was updating the systems that surface articles in Discover. Its stated aims fall into three areas:
- More local relevance: show users more content from websites based in their country.
- Less sensationalism: reduce the visibility of sensational content and clickbait.
- More substantive coverage: surface more in-depth, original, and timely articles from websites demonstrating expertise in the topic.
These are the aims Google described, not a published ranking formula. The announcement does not specify weights, thresholds, or a checklist that guarantees placement.

Google says its systems assess expertise topic by topic rather than treating a whole website as either expert or non-expert. A local news site, for example, could build expertise in gardening through a dedicated section even though it also covers other subjects. A movie-review site with only one gardening article would be less likely to demonstrate that subject expertise, according to Google’s example.

This means breadth alone does not disqualify a publisher, but publishing one isolated article on a topic is not the same as demonstrating sustained knowledge of it. Google did not publish a numeric test for expertise.
Does the update affect Google Search rankings?
Google’s announcement describes changes to Discover’s article-surfacing systems. Search Engine Roundtable reported that the rollout was specific to Discover and did not affect traditional Google Search rankings. It should not be described as a general Search core update on the evidence available.

When did the February 2026 update roll out?

Google said it planned to expand the update to all countries and languages in the months ahead. That was a stated plan, not confirmation of worldwide completion. The available reporting does not establish whether the expansion had finished by October 12, 2026.
How might the update affect publishers?
Traffic effects are uncertain. Google said: “Some sites might see increases or decreases; many sites may see no change at all.” It provided no numeric estimate of gains or losses, so claims that the update caused a particular percentage change are not supported by its announcement.
For editorial teams, the stated direction is a reason to make stories genuinely useful to their intended audience: develop sustained coverage where a publication has subject knowledge, add original reporting or analysis, and make headlines accurately reflect what the article delivers. Local relevance matters when it genuinely applies, and timeliness matters when the subject calls for it. These are practical interpretations of Google’s stated aims, not tactics that guarantee Discover distribution.
Search Engine Journal reported on February 6, 2026, that Google revised its Discover guidance alongside the update, adding page-experience recommendations and explicitly naming clickbait and sensationalism. That documentation-change detail is the publication’s report.

Personalization remains part of Discover
Google said Discover would continue to personalize content based on people’s creator and source preferences. The update was not described as replacing personalization with one universal ranking of publishers.
