Google News is the better choice when you deliberately want to follow named publishers, topics, or locations. Its Following feed is built around those selections and gives you controls to tune stories or hide a source. Google Discover is better for a passive stream of interest updates that appears in the Google app, a mobile browser, and some phone home screens without requiring a search.
Both services combine interests you choose with algorithmic recommendations, so neither is a completely manual reading list. The practical choice is whether you value a predictable collection of followed sources or a convenient, constantly refreshed stream. The comparison below is based on documented features, not a comparative hands-on performance test.
Quick answer: choose based on the kind of following you want
| What you want to do | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keep a deliberate list of named publishers and subjects | Google News | Its Following area supports topics, locations, and sources together. You can unfollow an interest, give feedback on an individual story, or hide a source. |
| Receive updates without opening a news service or searching | Google Discover | Discover is designed to surface interest updates in several Google and mobile surfaces, including the Google app and some home screens. |
| See different outlets’ reporting on one developing story | Google News | Full Coverage gathers additional resources, perspectives, and context in one place. |
| Remove an unwanted subject or publisher from a recommendation stream | Either | Discover offers “Not interested” and source-hiding controls where available; Google News provides story feedback and source hiding. |
| Use a feed that behaves more like an organized library | Google News | Following is explicitly organized around interests you selected, while Discover is primarily a recommendation feed. |
Google’s own descriptions establish the difference in emphasis: Discover provides interest updates “without searching for them,” while Google News is intended to help people access a broad range of news and personalize areas such as For you. See Google’s Discover help and its description of Google News.

Discover is an interest feed rather than a conventional news index. It can appear in the Google app, at Google.com in a mobile browser, and, on some devices, by swiping right from the home screen. Google says the service can show updates about interests even when you have not entered a search. Its examples include subjects such as a favorite sports team or a news site.

That design makes Discover useful when you want news to come to you. You can follow an interest and tell Google that a topic is not interesting or that you want to hide stories from a particular source. The controls available to you can depend on your country and language. Google’s current Discover help page also warns that its settings instructions are being updated, so menu names and their locations may not exactly match every device or account.
Discover is not limited to stories from sources you explicitly selected. Following an interest gives Google a signal, but the feed still chooses individual cards using other account and device information. A person who wants a strict, publisher-by-publisher reading list may therefore find the feed less predictable than Google News’s Following area.
What Google News is
Google News is available through Android and iOS apps and through browsers. Google describes it as a way to discover current events and content from diverse publishers, follow providers and topics, save stories, share them, and personalize the For you section. Some customization features require you to sign in.

For you is a personalized selection. Following is the area that matters most when your objective is to keep track of specific topics, locations, or sources. Story pages can also offer Full Coverage, a route to more reporting and context around a single event.
“Source” is Google’s term for a publisher or news provider in these controls. Following a source is different from bookmarking one article: the source-level choice is intended to influence the stories collected in your Following feed. Google also provides a way to hide all stories from a source if you no longer want it represented.
How to follow topics and publishers in Google News
The exact placement of buttons can change between the Android app, iOS app, and desktop browser. The sequence below reflects Google’s documented model; use the labels shown by your current signed-in version.
- Open Google News and sign in. Go to the Google News app or the Google News website. Sign-in is required for the customization features described in Google’s help documentation.
- Open Following. This area holds the topics, locations, and sources you have chosen. If you have not followed anything, Google News presents ways to search for an interest.
- Search for the interest. Enter the name of a subject, place, or publisher. Choose the matching result rather than assuming that a similarly named item is the source you intended.
- Follow the result. Add the topic, location, or source to your Following list. A source follow is the appropriate choice when you want coverage from a particular publisher; a topic follow is better when you want reporting from multiple outlets.
- Review the list periodically. Remove interests that no longer matter. Keeping the list small and intentional makes Following more useful as a reading queue.
- Tune individual stories when necessary. Use the story feedback controls Google provides when a particular item is irrelevant or unsuitable. This changes the selection signal without requiring you to remove the entire topic.
- Hide an unwanted source. When you do not want any stories from a provider, use the source-hiding control. This is a stronger action than marking one story as uninteresting.
Google documents these capabilities in “Customize what you find on Google News.” If an option is missing, check that you are signed in and that you are using a supported version of the app or browser.

How to follow interests in Google Discover
Discover does not present one universal interface. The feed may be reached from the Google app, from Google.com in a mobile browser, or by a home-screen gesture on devices that support it.
- Open the Discover feed on a supported surface. Start the Google app, visit Google.com in a mobile browser, or use the device’s home-screen Discover panel if it is enabled.
- Sign in if you want account-based continuity. Discover can use information stored in your Google Account. An unsigned or differently configured session may not show the same controls or feed.
- Follow an interest when Discover offers that option. Search or select a topic or news site and choose the follow control shown in the card or interest-management area.
- Correct unwanted recommendations. Mark a topic as “Not interested” when the subject itself is wrong for you. Use source-hiding when the problem is a particular provider rather than the topic.
- Review Discover settings. Google provides controls for managing personalized recommendations and related activity. The available labels and paths can change as the service is updated.
Google’s current instructions are in “Customize what you find in Discover.” That page explicitly notes that some features may not be available in every country or language and that its documented settings may not match the current product experience. Treat the steps as a map to the controls, not a guarantee that every device will show identical menus.
Following publishers: why Google News is usually more predictable
If “following” means maintaining a dependable set of named publishers, Google News has the clearer model. Sources live alongside topics and locations in Following, so you can build a list such as a local outlet, a national newspaper, a technology publication, and several subjects. The list is visible and editable rather than being represented only by a stream of individual recommendation cards.
Discover can follow news sites, but that follow is one input into a broader recommendation system. A followed site does not turn Discover into a complete chronological feed of everything that site publishes. Other account, device, and activity signals can influence which cards appear and when.
Google News also exposes a more direct response when a publisher becomes unwanted: hide all stories from that source. In Discover, source hiding is available where Google has enabled it, but the exact control may vary by language, country, and product surface. For source accountability and easier troubleshooting, Google News is the safer default.
Exploring a developing story: Google News Full Coverage
Following a publisher is useful for continuity, but it can also narrow your view. When you want to understand one breaking or ongoing event, Google News’s Full Coverage feature is the documented way to gather more material. It can collect additional resources, perspectives, and context around the same story.
Google says Full Coverage is not personalized beyond a reader’s language, region, and subscriptions. That makes it different from For you and from a normal Discover stream: the goal is to show a broader package of reporting rather than optimize every item for your individual history.

Full Coverage does not guarantee access to every article. A story may be behind a publisher’s paywall, and someone who has not paid for that publication may still be unable to read it. The feature helps you find additional coverage; it cannot remove a publisher’s access requirements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Full Coverage when the question is “How are different outlets reporting this?” Use Following when the question is “Which subjects and sources should I keep in my regular news collection?” Google explains the feature and its limits in “How Google News stories are selected” and “Find what you want on Google News.”
How personalization works in each service
Neither product is entirely manual or entirely algorithmic. Your explicit follows matter, but Google also uses activity and other settings to select and rank what you see. The balance depends on the product area and on your account configuration.
Google News signals
Google says sections such as For you and Following can use interests and sources set in News, along with past activity on Google services and YouTube. This means two people who follow the same topic may not receive identical ordering or story selections. Following provides a deliberate baseline, while activity can shape the surrounding recommendations.
Discover signals
Discover can use information from your device and other Google products, as well as data stored in your Google Account. Google identifies examples that can include Search Services History, personalized recommendations, and location settings. Those signals help explain why Discover can surface an interest without a new search and why its feed can change as your activity changes.
Google provides controls that let you manage aspects of personalization, including turning personalized recommendations off. Turning off a setting can change the feed rather than convert it into a complete manual subscription list. Review the controls available to your account before assuming that a setting removes every form of activity-based selection.
What “not personalized” means for Full Coverage
Full Coverage’s documented exception is narrow: Google says it is not personalized except for language, region, and subscriptions. It is therefore the most clearly defined route for comparing coverage of one event without the normal layer of personal-interest ranking.

Access, sign-in, country, and language limitations
Google News availability
Google describes News as available in Android and iOS apps and in browsers, but that does not mean every feature is available everywhere. Google’s Android help information identifies selected countries where the app is unavailable and gives Denmark and Finland as examples. Check the current availability for your country instead of assuming that an app-store listing or a browser page will work identically worldwide.
Signing in matters for customization. If you are not signed in, you may be able to read stories but not retain the same followed topics, sources, and tuning controls across sessions. Paid stories are another separate limitation: Google News can point to a publisher’s article, but access still depends on whether you have paid for it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDiscover availability
Discover can be available in the Google app, at Google.com in a mobile browser, and on some devices through a home-screen swipe. Google cautions that features may not be available in all countries or languages. The same account can therefore show different controls after a language, region, or device change.
Because Google labels its Discover settings documentation as subject to change, verify the current menu names on the target platform before publishing internal instructions or giving support to another user. A missing option may reflect regional rollout or a changed interface rather than an account error.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which service fits common reading goals?
You follow a beat across several publishers
Choose Google News. Follow the topic, add the sources you trust, and use Following as the central place to review them. When one event deserves deeper comparison, open Full Coverage rather than relying on a single card.
You want news to appear during the day with no setup ritual
Choose Discover. Its central promise is updates for interests without searching, and it is integrated into surfaces many phone users already open. Expect the stream to include algorithmic choices beyond the items you explicitly followed.
You care about local coverage
Google News is the more explicit fit because locations are a named Following category. You can combine a location with selected sources and broader topics. Discover may use location settings as one recommendation signal, but that is not the same as maintaining a visible location subscription.

You are researching a fast-moving event
Start in Google News and use Full Coverage to inspect additional resources, perspectives, and context. This is more suitable than waiting for Discover to decide which updates to surface, especially when you need to compare outlets rather than receive one personalized stream.
You are trying to reduce noise
Either service can help, but use the controls at the right level. Mark a single irrelevant story as not interesting when the item is the problem. Hide the source when the publisher is the problem. Remove a followed topic only when you no longer want the subject at all.
A practical two-service setup
You do not have to choose one service exclusively. A sensible division of labor is:
- Build your deliberate list in Google News. Follow the subjects, locations, and publishers that you want to check reliably.
- Use Discover for serendipity. Let it surface adjacent interests, updates you did not search for, and stories that are not yet part of your News list.
- Use Google News Full Coverage for verification and breadth. When a Discover card or a followed-source story matters, open the corresponding coverage in News to find other perspectives.
- Apply feedback instead of abandoning the feed. Remove a bad story, hide a noisy source, or adjust a topic so that the recommendation systems receive a more precise signal.
- Recheck settings after device or region changes. Availability and controls can differ by platform, country, and language.
This arrangement preserves a stable core without giving up the convenience of an automatically refreshed stream. It also separates three different tasks—maintaining sources, discovering unexpected items, and comparing coverage—so that no single feed has to do all of them.
Common misunderstandings to avoid
“Following a source means I will see everything it publishes.”
Neither service promises a complete chronological mirror of a publisher. Following is an input to selection. Google News still personalizes sections, and Discover adds broader recommendation signals.
“Discover is only for people who never follow anything.”
Discover supports following interests, including news sites, but those follows operate inside a recommendation feed. The distinction is not whether following exists; it is how prominently the service organizes and exposes the followed list.
“Full Coverage is just another personalized list.”
Google says Full Coverage is not personalized except for language, region, and subscriptions. Its purpose is to collect more resources and perspectives for a story, not to reproduce the same ranking as For you.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
“Hiding a source removes its articles from the internet.”
Source hiding changes what Google presents to your feed. It does not delete the publisher’s website, alter a paywall, or prevent someone from visiting the source directly.
“The same instructions work in every country.”
Google documents country, language, platform, and sign-in dependencies for these products. Discover’s help page specifically warns that its settings guidance is being updated, so confirm the interface you actually see.
Decision checklist
- Do you want an explicit list of publishers? Start with Google News Following.
- Do you need location follows as well as topics and sources? Google News has the clearest documented support.
- Do you want updates to arrive without a search? Use Discover.
- Do you need multiple viewpoints on one event? Open Google News Full Coverage.
- Do you need to eliminate one provider? Use source hiding, where available.
- Do you need to eliminate only one subject? Remove or tune that interest rather than blocking every source.
- Are a control or app missing? Check sign-in, platform, country, and language before treating it as a fault.
For most readers who ask specifically about following topics and publishers, Google News is the stronger primary tool because its Following feed makes those relationships visible and manageable. Discover is the complementary choice when the priority is effortless, interest-based updates that arrive across Google’s mobile surfaces.
