Google DeepMind’s October 15, 2026 walkthrough shows its Antigravity science workbench coordinating an antimicrobial-peptide investigation, not delivering a finished antibiotic. The example identifies A0A0U0D591, a 97-amino-acid candidate from Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae that belongs to the Lactococcin 972 family. Sequence, predicted-structure and genomic-neighborhood clues make it a biologically plausible bacteriocin lead, but its antimicrobial activity, mechanism and safety still require laboratory testing.
What Google DeepMind’s walkthrough actually discovered
The demonstration starts with a narrow biological question: which previously uncharacterized proteins in Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae might be antimicrobial peptides? Antigravity coordinates the investigation between a biologist and an AI agent. It searches protein resources, annotates sequences, checks structural evidence, examines neighboring genes and turns the resulting hypothesis into an experimental plan.
The lead is UniProt candidate A0A0U0D591. The walkthrough describes it as 97 amino acids long and associated with the Lactococcin 972 family of bacteriocins. “Novel” here means that the sequence did not show a meaningful match among manually reviewed proteins in the stated comparison; it does not mean the molecule has already been shown to be new, active or safe in the laboratory.

ProtNLM supplies the first-pass annotation
ProtNLM is used to examine UniProt sequences that lack a useful prior characterization. In this workflow it narrows a large protein set into candidates worth investigating, giving the biologist a starting point for deeper sequence, structure and genome-context checks. Its output guides prioritization; it is not evidence that a peptide kills bacteria.

BLAST tests how unusual the sequence is
The researcher sends A0A0U0D591 through Swiss-Prot using the EMBL-EBI NCBI-BLAST service. The walkthrough reports no meaningful sequence homolog among manually reviewed proteins. That finding strengthens the case for examining the candidate, because a close, well-characterized match might otherwise explain its function. It remains a database-dependent observation: an absence of a meaningful reviewed hit is not a universal claim that the sequence has no relatives.
AlphaFold adds a structural clue
Antigravity retrieves an AlphaFold Protein Structure Database prediction and compares it with experimentally determined protein structures. The predicted fold closely matches an experimentally determined bacteriocin fold. This convergence makes a bacteriocin interpretation more credible than sequence annotation alone, while preserving the essential distinction between a computational prediction and a laboratory structure.

The surrounding genes support a bacteriocin-system hypothesis
The candidate sits six base pairs upstream of an ABC-transporter permease. Nearby genes include a possible ATP-binding partner, another annotated bacteriocin and an XRE transcriptional regulator. Transport, regulation and a second bacteriocin-like gene provide genomic context that is consistent with a coordinated antimicrobial system. The arrangement supports a hypothesis about how the locus may function; it does not show that A0A0U0D591 is produced, exported or active under any particular growth condition.
What Antigravity contributes
The important capability in the walkthrough is coordination. Rather than asking one model for a single prediction, the workbench links several tasks that normally require switching among databases and analysis tools: finding candidates, checking sequence novelty, obtaining a structure prediction, comparing folds, reading the genomic neighborhood and assembling an experimental protocol.

The scientist remains responsible for setting the question, judging whether each result is relevant and deciding what should be tested. Antigravity therefore functions as an agentic science workbench for organizing evidence and proposing next steps, not as an autonomous replacement for experimental or scientific judgment.

- Protein expression: produce the candidate peptide or protein in an experimental system.
- Antimicrobial susceptibility testing: determine whether it inhibits or kills target bacteria and under what conditions.
- Target-engagement studies: test whether the proposed biological target and mechanism are involved.
- In-vitro toxicity testing: check for harmful effects in relevant non-bacterial test systems.
Google DeepMind says the lead and other candidates from the pipeline are undergoing wet-lab validation. Its own description calls the lead “a biologically plausible” candidate backed by structural and genomic evidence while explicitly stating that laboratory validation is still required. Until those experiments are reported, claims about potency, selectivity, resistance profile, mechanism or safety remain provisional.

No. The walkthrough presents a computationally supported lead, not a clinical drug or a confirmed treatment. The predicted activity against several drug-resistant pathogens and the proposed connection to bacterial cell division are hypotheses generated from sequence, structure, genome context and literature reasoning. They must be checked with controlled assays before anyone can assess dose, spectrum, toxicity, resistance development or therapeutic usefulness.

Can you buy or use the peptide?
The walkthrough does not announce a commercial product, synthesis supplier, price, approved medical use or public experimental protocol for routine use. A sequence identifier in a technical demonstration is not the same as a quality-controlled peptide preparation. Readers should not attempt to self-administer it, substitute it for an antibiotic, or treat the predicted spectrum as medical advice. Any legitimate use would require appropriate laboratory facilities, biosafety procedures, identity and purity testing, and a validated assay plan.
Why this workflow matters for antimicrobial discovery
Antimicrobial resistance is the problem motivating this kind of search; the post cites an estimate of 10 million deaths per year globally by 2050, but does not identify an originating organization for that figure. The practical lesson of the walkthrough is narrower and more defensible: integrating sequence, structure and genomic context can make it faster to prioritize plausible candidates for experiments. It cannot remove the experimental bottleneck. For A0A0U0D591, the decisive evidence will come from the wet-lab tests now described as underway.
