There is no universal winner between Google Cloud TPU, AWS Trainium and NVIDIA GPU instances. The right accelerator is the one that runs your exact model, operators and precision at the required throughput or latency, fits in memory, scales with acceptable engineering effort and delivers the lowest measured cost in your target region.
Use the comparison below to narrow the candidates, then run a representative end-to-end benchmark before committing capacity. Peak FLOPS and a vendor price claim are useful screening signals, not a substitute for workload evidence.
Start with workload fit, not the accelerator name
Write down the workload you actually need to operate. “AI training” is too broad to select hardware. Record the model architecture and version, training or inference mode, input dimensions or sequence length, numeric precision, batch size, concurrency, checkpoint frequency, and your target throughput or latency. Also note the region, availability requirements and whether the system must run on a managed service, virtual machine or Kubernetes cluster.

Google positions its TPU v6e (Trillium) for transformer, text-to-image and convolutional-neural-network training, fine-tuning and serving. AWS positions Trn2 for generative-AI training and inference, including large-language, multimodal and diffusion-transformer models. AWS EC2 documentation also lists instances containing NVIDIA H100 and B200 GPUs. Those descriptions identify plausible starting points; they do not prove that one platform is fastest for your implementation.
For TPU workload guidance, see Google Cloud’s TPU v6e documentation. Trainium’s workload positioning and instance details are in AWS’s Trn2 and UltraServer documentation, while GPU instance configurations are listed in the EC2 accelerated-computing specifications.

What TPU v6e is designed to run
Google describes TPU v6e, also called Trillium, as optimized for transformer, text-to-image and convolutional-neural-network workloads across training, fine-tuning and serving. The live v6e documentation lists 918 TFLOPs of BF16 peak compute per chip and 32 GB of HBM per chip. These are Google-published hardware specifications, not measured application throughput; actual results depend on model shape, compiler graph, input pipeline and utilization. Review the current specifications at the v6e page.
Framework and runtime considerations
Google documents JAX and PyTorch routes for TPU v6e, and its runtime page lists software versions by TPU generation. A framework label is not proof that your model will run unchanged: inspect every operator, custom kernel, precision mode, attention implementation, data-loader path and serving library. Compile a representative model graph and test numerical behavior as well as speed.
Google’s training guidance says the Cloud TPU API is no longer under active development and is not supported on TPU7x and later. For current features and newer generations, it recommends Compute Engine or Google Kubernetes Engine. That caveat makes the deployment path part of the hardware decision; instructions written for an older API may not apply to a current TPU. Check the TPU runtime versions page and the generation-specific documentation before creating resources.

Provisioning, quota and operations
Google’s planning guidance describes Flex-start, Spot and reservations, along with workload-appropriate situations and quota requirements. Capacity mode changes both scheduling risk and who manages infrastructure. Before a benchmark, verify the TPU type is available in the intended region, request quota, decide whether an interruption-tolerant mode is acceptable, and account for host, storage, networking and checkpoint management. The planning checklist is in Plan your Cloud TPU resources.
How TPU pricing should be read
Google’s pricing page presents prices in U.S. dollars per chip-hour and notes that price varies by product, deployment model and region. A chip-hour is not equivalent to an AWS instance-hour or to the cost of completing one training run. Your estimate must include chip count, host resources, storage, networking, utilization, reservation or interruption effects and idle time. Use Google Cloud TPU pricing for the current regional figures, then calculate cost per completed job or served request.
AWS Trainium2: strengths and constraints
Hardware and scale
AWS describes EC2 Trn2 instances as using 16 Trainium2 chips. The product page lists up to 20.8 FP8 petaflops per Trn2 instance, 1.5 TB of total accelerator memory and 46 TB/s of total memory bandwidth. AWS also describes Trn2 UltraServers that join 64 chips, with up to 83.2 FP8 petaflops and 6 TB of HBM. The source material labels UltraServers as preview, so verify current availability, region and status before treating those figures as deployable capacity. All figures are AWS specifications, not independent application benchmarks. See the Trn2 product page.
Neuron software path
AWS Neuron includes compiler and runtime components, training and inference libraries, and profiling and debugging tools. AWS documents integrations with PyTorch and JAX. That establishes platform-level support, not universal compatibility or zero migration effort. Test your exact model implementation, operators, precision, distributed strategy, checkpoint format and serving stack on the specific Neuron version you intend to deploy. Neuron details are published at AWS Neuron.
AWS price-performance claim
AWS states that Trn2 delivers 30–40% better price performance than GPU-based EC2 P5e and P5en instances. This is an AWS vendor claim, not an independent cross-cloud result. The page does not establish that every model, precision, region or operating pattern receives that improvement. Treat it as a hypothesis to test with your workload, and record the assumptions behind any reproduction.

Service and capacity planning
Confirm that the required Trn2 instance or UltraServer capacity exists in your target region and that the AWS services you need support it. Include EBS or other storage, networking, data-transfer charges, checkpoint destinations, monitoring and image maintenance in the operating plan. Decide how you will handle retries and capacity interruptions before measuring cost; otherwise an apparently cheap run may hide engineering and idle-time overhead.

NVIDIA GPU instances: what this comparison can and cannot establish
AWS’s accelerated-computing documentation lists EC2 instance families with NVIDIA H100 and B200 GPUs and reports their configurations and accelerator memory. That makes AWS-hosted NVIDIA instances a documented comparison path, not a proxy for every NVIDIA system or cloud. The available evidence here does not establish a complete review of NVIDIA’s software ecosystem, availability in a particular region, or a like-for-like price/performance result. Compare the exact EC2 instance, GPU count, memory capacity, interconnect, driver and software image you can actually obtain.
For a GPU benchmark, freeze the software image and record driver, framework, CUDA-dependent libraries, precision, kernel implementations and serving runtime. A model that is highly optimized for one GPU library may show a different result after porting to TPU or Neuron; conversely, a portability layer may leave specialized GPU kernels unused. Do not infer portability or performance from the GPU brand alone.
Will a PyTorch or JAX model run?
PyTorch and JAX support is a starting point, not a compatibility guarantee. Use this sequence on each candidate:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Pin versions: record the framework, compiler or runtime, model library, tokenizer or preprocessor and serving package.
- Inventory operators: list custom extensions, fused attention, quantization, sparse operations, random-number behavior and unsupported data types.
- Compile a small representative graph: use production-shaped sequence lengths, image sizes and batch dimensions rather than a toy tensor.
- Check correctness: compare losses, logits, generated tokens or image quality within an agreed numerical tolerance.
- Exercise distribution: run the intended parallelism, collectives, checkpoint and restart path across the target number of hosts.
- Measure the full service: include input loading, preprocessing, compilation warm-up, communication, post-processing and queueing.
Google’s TPU runtime documentation identifies generation-specific JAX and PyTorch paths at docs.cloud.google.com/tpu/docs/runtimes. AWS’s Neuron documentation covers its PyTorch and JAX integrations at aws.amazon.com/ai/machine-learning/neuron. NVIDIA results require the exact GPU image and libraries selected for the EC2 instance; the instance listing alone does not describe your software stack.
Memory, interconnect and scaling: the capacity questions that decide the shortlist
Calculate the real memory requirement
For training, budget for weights, gradients, optimizer states, activations, temporary workspaces and communication buffers. Mixed precision changes storage requirements but does not eliminate optimizer or activation memory. For inference, include the KV cache for the maximum concurrent requests and context length. Then leave headroom for fragmentation and framework growth. A model that fits only at batch one may fail your throughput target.
Match parallelism to the fabric
Measure the ratio of computation to cross-device communication for your model. Tensor and pipeline parallelism can be limited by collective latency and bandwidth; data parallelism can be limited by gradient synchronization and input delivery. Compare the topology and network behavior of the exact TPU slice, Trn2 instance or UltraServer, or GPU instance you will rent. The number of accelerators alone says nothing about scaling efficiency.

How to compare AI accelerator costs correctly
Use cost per useful result, not cost per advertised unit. A consistent estimate should include:
- Accelerator and host charges for the full wall-clock run, including compilation and warm-up.
- Storage for datasets, caches, checkpoints and logs.
- Network and data-transfer charges, including cross-zone or cross-region traffic.
- Reserved-capacity commitments, Spot or interruption losses, and idle capacity while jobs wait.
- Engineering time to port kernels, maintain images, debug compilers and operate distributed jobs.
- For inference, request volume, queueing, autoscaling headroom and the latency target.
For TPU, start with the regional per-chip-hour figure on Google’s pricing page, then add non-chip resources. For Trn2 and GPU candidates, use the current price for the exact EC2 configuration and region. Do not compare a TPU chip-hour with a 16-chip Trn2 instance-hour or a multi-GPU instance without normalizing accelerator count, memory, utilization and elapsed time.
Report at least three results for each candidate: cost per training step or sample at steady state, cost per completed training run, and cost per production inference unit at the target latency. Show the assumptions and date because prices, capacity and software versions change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable benchmark process
- Define acceptance criteria. Set an accuracy or quality threshold, throughput target, p95 or p99 latency target, maximum restart time and budget ceiling.
- Freeze the workload. Use one model commit, dataset slice, sequence or image dimensions, precision, batch and concurrency on every platform.
- Prepare production-shaped environments. Pin images and runtime versions; pre-stage data; configure the intended storage, network and checkpoint path.
- Verify correctness first. Compare outputs and training curves before optimizing. A fast but numerically incorrect run is not a win.
- Warm up and separate phases. Record compilation, startup and steady-state intervals separately. Repeat enough steps or requests to smooth transient effects.
- Measure end to end. Capture throughput, latency percentiles, accelerator utilization, memory usage, host utilization, input stalls, communication time, retries and checkpoint duration.
- Scale out. Repeat at the smallest useful configuration and at the target cluster size. Calculate scaling efficiency and total cost, not just single-device speed.
- Price the same result. Apply current regional rates and all ancillary charges to the measured wall-clock time. Include failed attempts and idle periods.
- Document operational work. Note quota lead time, image changes, compiler workarounds, monitoring gaps and on-call procedures.
Keep the benchmark artifacts—model commit, lockfiles, container digest, runtime versions, region, instance or slice type and measurement scripts—so a price or software update can be retested rather than guessed.
Common failure modes and recovery steps
The model compiles but runs slowly
Inspect unsupported or decomposed operators, excessive host-device transfers, input starvation, low arithmetic intensity and synchronization barriers. Replace toy dimensions with production shapes, profile the graph, and test fused or library-native kernels for the target runtime.

The model does not fit in memory
Reduce activation or KV-cache pressure with an evidence-backed batch or sequence change, use an appropriate sharding strategy, or select a configuration with more accelerator memory. Re-measure quality and latency after every change; memory relief that changes the workload is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
Distributed scaling stalls
Profile collectives and checkpoint traffic, verify topology, overlap communication with computation where supported, and test fewer or more hosts. If scaling efficiency collapses, compare cost per completed job rather than adding accelerators.
Capacity or quota blocks the project
Check regional capacity and quota before writing production schedules. Consider a reservation or a different region only after accounting for data-transfer, latency, compliance and operational effects. Interruption-tolerant modes require checkpointing and retry automation.
Documentation and availability disagree
Generation-specific APIs, runtime versions and preview services can change. Confirm the status in the current provider documentation, record the verification date, and avoid designing a production dependency on a feature whose availability is not confirmed.
A practical decision tree
Choose TPU first when
- Your transformer, text-to-image or CNN workload maps cleanly to the documented TPU v6e path.
- You can use the supported JAX or PyTorch/XLA runtime and accept generation-specific API constraints.
- The required TPU capacity, quota and region are available, and measured throughput or cost meets the target.
Choose Trainium first when
- Your generative-AI training or inference workload is compatible with the Neuron compiler and libraries.
- You benefit from AWS-native storage, networking and deployment services and can obtain the required Trn2 capacity.
- Your own benchmark validates AWS’s price-performance claim for your model rather than relying on the headline percentage.
Choose an NVIDIA GPU instance first when
- Your model depends on GPU-specific kernels, libraries or tooling that are not yet portable.
- You need the exact H100 or B200 configuration documented for an available AWS region and image.
- Your measured result, software maturity or operational requirements outweigh the potential gains from porting.
These are starting hypotheses. If two candidates pass compatibility and capacity checks, let the controlled benchmark and total-cost model decide.
What to record before signing a capacity commitment
- Exact accelerator generation, instance or slice type, chip count and memory.
- Cloud region, availability status, quota and reservation or interruption terms.
- Framework, compiler, driver, runtime, model-library and container versions.
- Model commit, precision, dimensions, batch, concurrency and parallelism strategy.
- Measured throughput, latency percentiles, utilization, memory, retries and checkpoint time.
- Compute, storage, network, idle and engineering costs used in the estimate.
- Migration plan, rollback target and criteria for rerunning the benchmark after software or price changes.
That record turns an accelerator choice into a repeatable engineering decision. Without it, a comparison is only a collection of incompatible specifications.
