Google Chat and Slack both support emoji in message text, emoji reactions, and custom emoji. The practical difference is who can use the custom-emoji tools and how much control each workspace gets. Google Chat limits custom emoji to work or school accounts, lets administrators disable the feature, and keeps custom emoji inside the organization. Slack makes custom emoji available on every plan; members can add them by default (guests cannot), unless an owner or administrator changes that permission. Slack also adds documented aliases and emoji packs.

Reactions are separate from emoji typed into a message. A text emoji becomes part of the message content; a reaction is attached to an existing message and can be added or removed without editing that message. Slack documents the end-user reaction controls in detail. Google’s available documentation confirms reaction creation through the Chat API, using a Unicode emoji representation, but does not establish a complete click-by-click interface comparison.

At a glance: where the two products differ

Question Google Chat Slack
Can users type standard emoji in messages? Yes. Emoji are inserted as message content. Yes. Emoji are inserted as message content.
Can users react to a message? Yes. The documented Chat API can create reactions with a Unicode emoji representation. Yes. Users can use the message’s Add reaction control on desktop or press and hold a message on mobile.
Who is eligible to create custom emoji? Work and school accounts. An administrator can disable custom emoji. Custom emoji are available on all plans. Members can add them by default; guests cannot, unless workspace or organization settings change the permission.
Can custom emoji be shared outside the organization or workspace? No. Google states that custom emoji cannot be shared with people outside the organization. The cited Slack documentation does not establish a direct equivalent cross-organization rule. Treat availability outside your workspace as unconfirmed and check the current workspace policy.
Can administrators delete another person’s custom emoji? Emoji managers can delete emoji created by others. Owners and administrators have broad deletion permissions under Slack’s plan-specific rules. Members can delete emoji they added.
Aliases and emoji packs Not established in the cited Google documentation. Documented features include emoji aliases and emoji packs.

If your priority is tightly controlled, organization-only custom artwork, Google Chat’s restriction is decisive. If you want broad custom-emoji availability plus aliases and packs, Slack exposes more customization controls, while still allowing owners and administrators to restrict who can add or remove emoji.

Emoji in a message and reactions are different actions

Emoji inserted into message text

An emoji inserted while composing a message is ordinary message content. It appears wherever that message appears, can be copied with the text, and remains part of the message when someone edits or quotes it. A custom emoji used this way is effectively a small piece of workspace-specific vocabulary: a team may use an internal mascot, a project status icon, or a recurring joke instead of a standard Unicode character.

Because it is message content, the sender chooses its position and can combine it with words, punctuation, or other emoji. It does not create a separate count of people who selected it, and removing a message is the normal way to remove the whole piece of content.

Reactions attached to a message

A reaction is a separate object associated with an existing message. It communicates acknowledgement, approval, urgency, or another lightweight response without adding a new reply. Multiple people can select the same reaction, and an individual can normally select that reaction again to remove their own selection.

This distinction matters when you compare records and workflows. A message containing a thumbs-up emoji says that the author wrote a thumbs-up. A thumbs-up reaction says that a participant responded to someone else’s message. They may look similar in the conversation, but they serve different purposes and are managed differently.

How custom emoji work in Google Chat

Eligibility and administrator control

Google Chat’s custom-emoji feature is limited to work and school accounts. Personal accounts are not covered by the documented availability statement. Even with an eligible account, an administrator may disable custom emoji for the organization. If the option is missing, first confirm that you are signed in with the intended organization account and then ask an administrator whether the feature is enabled.

This is an organization-level boundary rather than a setting that an individual can work around. A user cannot make a personal account eligible by uploading an image, and a user cannot override an administrator’s decision from the Chat interface.

Organization-only sharing

Google states that custom emoji cannot be shared with people outside your organization. That affects guests, external collaborators, and conversations that cross organizational boundaries. A custom emoji created for an internal team should not be treated as a portable asset that every external participant will see.

Before standardizing a custom emoji in a process, decide whether outside participants need to understand the message. Use a standard Unicode emoji or words when an external audience may be involved; reserve organization-specific artwork for internal conversations where every participant is covered by the same organization policy.

Creating and using a custom emoji

Google’s help documentation confirms that eligible Chat users can create and use custom emoji, but the available evidence does not establish a complete, universal click sequence for every current Chat surface. The labels and placement can vary between the web experience and managed workspaces. In practice, the safe workflow is:

  1. Sign in to Google Chat with a work or school account in an organization where custom emoji are enabled.
  2. Open the emoji picker while composing a message and look for the control to add or create a custom emoji.
  3. Choose the image and provide the requested name or identifying details.
  4. Save the emoji, then select it from the custom-emoji area when composing a message.
  5. Test it in an internal conversation before using it in a procedure, status convention, or announcement.

If the creation control is absent, do not assume that the image format is the only problem. Eligibility, administrator policy, or the account’s organizational context can each remove access.

Deleting a Google Chat custom emoji

Deletion has an organization-wide effect. Google says that deleting a custom emoji removes it for everyone in the organization and replaces it wherever that emoji appears in messages or reactions. Emoji managers can delete emoji made by other people, so ownership is not the only source of deletion authority.

Use deletion as a governance action, not as routine housekeeping. Removing an emoji can change how old messages and reactions render for every employee or student. If an icon is tied to a documented workflow, record the replacement wording or standard Unicode emoji before deleting it.

How custom emoji work in Slack

Plan availability and who can add emoji

Slack documents custom emoji as available on all plans. Members can add custom emoji by default. Guests are not allowed to add them by default, and workspace or organization owners can restrict the permission further. This gives Slack a broader starting point than Google Chat: eligibility is not limited to work or school account types, but the workspace’s role and administration settings still determine who can perform the upload.

When a member cannot find the add-emoji control, check the person’s role and the workspace or organization setting before troubleshooting the file. A guest may be able to use existing emoji while being unable to create new ones.

Image guidance for uploads

Slack’s help guidance says that square images under 128 KB with transparent backgrounds work best. The documented supported formats are JPG, PNG, and GIF; animated GIFs can contain up to 50 frames. “Works best” is important: these are practical recommendations for reliable display and legibility, not a promise that every image outside those characteristics will be rejected in exactly the same way.

  • Crop the artwork to a square so it remains recognizable at the small size used in a message or reaction.
  • Keep the file below 128 KB to follow Slack’s documented best-practice guidance.
  • Use PNG when transparency is important, JPG for photographic artwork without transparency, and GIF when animation is genuinely useful.
  • Limit an animated GIF to 50 frames or fewer.
  • Preview the result at chat size; fine text and subtle color differences often disappear when an image is rendered as an emoji.

Aliases and emoji packs

Slack documents two customization features beyond uploading a single image. An emoji alias gives an additional name to an existing emoji, which can help teams remember a shorthand or preserve a familiar command after a naming change. Emoji packs group related custom emoji so a team can add a consistent visual set instead of handling every icon as an isolated upload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aliases and packs are useful for discoverability, but they also create naming decisions. Choose names that are easy to spell, avoid near-duplicates, and document any internal convention so people do not create several aliases for the same status.

Deleting a Slack custom emoji

Slack gives owners and administrators broad deletion permissions under its plan-specific rules. Members can delete emoji they added. The exact authority can therefore depend on both the person’s role and the workspace’s plan or administrative configuration.

Before deleting a widely used emoji, search for its use in team documentation and pinned guidance. Replacing an image with a new alias may be less disruptive than removing the old name, especially when people rely on it in message search or informal status conventions.

Reactions: the documented user experience

Slack desktop and mobile controls

On Slack desktop, a user can add a reaction through a message’s Add reaction control. On mobile, Slack documents pressing and holding the message to reach the reaction action. Selecting a reaction that you already added removes your selection. Slack also documents one-click suggested reactions, which can make frequent acknowledgements faster than opening the full picker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These controls apply to reactions attached to messages, not to emoji typed into the composer. If a team’s process requires an auditable acknowledgement, make sure participants know whether they should add a reaction or write a reply; the two actions produce different conversation records.

Google Chat reaction evidence and its limit

Google’s developer documentation confirms that the Chat API can create a reaction and that the request specifies the emoji’s Unicode representation. That is useful for integrations and automation: a program can identify the intended standard emoji character when creating the reaction.

The API documentation does not, by itself, establish every end-user click path in the current Google Chat web or mobile interface. Do not assume that a control named Add reaction, a particular press-and-hold gesture, or a specific picker layout is identical to Slack. For a user-facing rollout, verify the current controls in the version of Chat your organization deploys.

Side-by-side workflows

When you need a custom emoji in Google Chat

  1. Confirm that the account is a work or school account.
  2. Ask the organization administrator whether custom emoji are enabled.
  3. Check that every intended viewer belongs to the same organization, because Google does not allow sharing custom emoji outside it.
  4. Create the emoji from the Chat composer’s custom-emoji control, following the current labels shown in your organization.
  5. Use the emoji in an internal test conversation and verify that it appears for the people who need it.
  6. Assign an owner or emoji manager who can handle future deletion requests.

When you need a custom emoji in Slack

  1. Confirm that you are a member rather than a guest, unless an administrator has explicitly changed guest permissions.
  2. Check the workspace or organization setting if the add-emoji control is unavailable.
  3. Prepare a square JPG, PNG, or GIF. Keep it under 128 KB, use transparency when it improves readability, and keep animation to 50 frames or fewer.
  4. Open Slack’s custom-emoji management control, upload the file, and assign a clear name.
  5. If the emoji belongs to a set, add an alias or place it in an emoji pack according to the workspace’s conventions.
  6. Post a test message and ask a colleague to confirm that the name is discoverable and the artwork is legible.

Choosing between Google Chat and Slack for emoji-heavy collaboration

Choose Google Chat when organizational boundaries are the priority

Google Chat is the better fit when custom artwork must remain inside a managed work or school organization. The eligibility rule and the explicit outside-organization restriction reduce the chance that an internal icon will be treated as a universal asset. Central administration also provides a clear control point: administrators can disable the feature, and emoji managers can remove creations made by other users.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is less flexibility for mixed audiences. Personal accounts are not eligible under the documented rule, external participants cannot receive the custom emoji, and the available documentation does not establish Slack-style aliases or emoji packs.

Choose Slack when customization breadth matters

Slack is the better fit when a workspace wants custom emoji on any plan, member-created additions, aliases, and emoji packs. The upload guidance is explicit enough to support a small asset standard, and the documented desktop and mobile reaction controls are easy to teach.

The trade-off is governance complexity. Guests cannot add emoji by default, owners and administrators can restrict permissions, and deletion authority varies with role and plan-specific rules. A workspace should publish naming and ownership conventions before a large collection develops.

Use a decision checklist

  • Account mix: Are all participants on eligible work or school accounts, or do you need a broader plan-based model?
  • External collaboration: Must custom artwork be visible outside the organization? Google Chat’s documented rule says no; Slack’s cited help does not settle an equivalent cross-organization behavior.
  • Governance: Do administrators need to disable the feature or delete other people’s emoji?
  • Customization: Are aliases and grouped emoji packs important, or is a small internal set enough?
  • Asset standards: Can your team keep images square, under 128 KB, and within the GIF frame guidance Slack documents?
  • Reaction training: Will people understand when to react and when to write a message?

Troubleshooting common problems

The custom-emoji option is missing in Google Chat

  • Verify that you are using a work or school account rather than a personal account.
  • Ask the administrator whether custom emoji have been disabled.
  • Confirm that the conversation participants are in the same organization if you are trying to use an existing custom emoji.
  • Use standard Unicode emoji or words for external conversations.

A Slack member cannot upload an emoji

  • Check whether the person is a guest; guests cannot add custom emoji by default.
  • Ask a workspace or organization owner whether member additions have been restricted.
  • Check the file format, square dimensions, size under 128 KB, and GIF frame count.
  • Rename the emoji to avoid a collision or confusingly similar alias.

A reaction is not doing what you expect

  • Confirm that you are using the reaction control rather than inserting an emoji into a new message.
  • On Slack, use Add reaction on desktop or press and hold the message on mobile.
  • If you selected the same Slack reaction again, it was removed by design.
  • For Google Chat integrations, verify that the API request uses the intended Unicode representation; API support does not guarantee that every client exposes identical controls.

A deleted emoji still appears in old conversation history

Google’s documented behavior is explicit: deleting a custom emoji removes it for everyone in the organization and replaces it in messages or reactions. Slack deletion authority and behavior follow the workspace’s documented role and plan rules. If historical rendering matters, capture the replacement policy before deleting an icon and communicate the change to the people who use it.

Practical governance for custom emoji

Custom emoji become easier to manage when a team treats them as shared interface elements rather than disposable pictures. Assign a naming convention, define who approves a new icon, and keep a short list of canonical meanings. Avoid encoding sensitive information, private employee details, or time-limited announcements into artwork that may remain in conversation history.

For reactions, teach a small vocabulary: for example, use one reaction for acknowledgement and another for a request for follow-up. Keep the convention optional where context is obvious; reactions are lightweight signals, not a replacement for a decision recorded in words.

Review the feature after workspace policy changes. Google administrators can disable custom emoji, while Slack owners and administrators can change who may add or remove them. A permission change can make an established process fail even though existing messages remain visible.

Bottom line

Both products handle ordinary emoji and message reactions, but they optimize for different kinds of control. Google Chat is the constrained, organization-only option: custom emoji require a work or school account, can be disabled by an administrator, and cannot be shared outside the organization. Slack is the more extensible option: custom emoji are available on all plans, members can add them by default, and aliases and emoji packs broaden customization, subject to guest and administrator restrictions. For reactions, Slack documents the end-user controls; Google’s cited documentation confirms API creation with Unicode emoji but does not support assuming an identical interface.
