Use local search ads when you want location-based placements on Google Search and Maps, and choose a campaign type that matches your control and measurement needs. “Google Business Profile ads” is not a separate campaign type in Google’s current documentation. The phrase usually means ads that use a linked Business Profile or its location data. Your practical choices are Search campaigns with location assets, Smart campaigns, or Performance Max for store goals.
The right decision depends less on the label and more on the customer action you need: a phone call, directions, a website enquiry, a store visit or a store sale. Google documents the available formats and billing interactions, but not a universal performance winner or a dependable cross-business cost benchmark.
What “Google Business Profile ads” actually means
A Google Business Profile is the business listing and location-information source that Google Ads can connect to an advertising account. It supplies details such as the address, phone number and business location for eligible ad formats. It is not presented by Google as a standalone campaign type called “Google Business Profile ads.”
In particular, Google says a linked Business Profile is required when you create a Smart campaign. The profile can also supply information for location assets in other campaigns. Those assets can add a location, a call button and a link to a business-details page to an ad. See Google’s explanations of local ads and assets.

Therefore, the comparison is not between two equivalent products. It is between different ways of using your business location in Google Ads:
- Business Profile: the listing and location data source.
- Location assets: ad assets that connect a location to eligible campaigns.
- Local search ads: location-featured ads that may appear for nearby searches on Google Search and Maps.
- Smart campaigns: an automated campaign option in Smart mode that requires a linked profile.
- Performance Max for store goals: an automated campaign built around physical-store outcomes.
This distinction matters when someone says, “How do I advertise my Google Business Profile?” The answer is not to turn on the profile itself. You link the profile or another location source to a suitable campaign, add location assets where required, and then configure targeting, budget, creative and conversion measurement.
What local search ads are and where they appear
When someone searches for a nearby business on Google.com or Google Maps—for example, “coffee near me”—Google says they may see a local search ad featuring business locations. The ad can show location information and local interaction options when the account has eligible location assets. Google’s description is available in Target customers near an address with location assets.
Local search placements can help a searcher decide to:
- open the location details,
- request directions,
- call from a mobile device, or
- visit the advertiser’s website.
Google documents standard cost-per-click charges for these interactions, including location-detail views, direction requests, mobile click-to-call interactions and website clicks. The applicable charge and eligibility depend on the campaign and interaction; there is no universal local-search CPC supplied by Google for every business.
Google’s local-ad documentation also describes placements across Google properties such as Search and Maps, and some local-ad formats can extend to Waze. The exact surfaces available depend on the campaign, location assets, account eligibility and auction. A location asset is therefore an opportunity to qualify for local placements, not a guarantee of a particular map position.
Location assets do not guarantee that an ad will appear for every nearby query. Eligibility, auction conditions, targeting, ad quality, budget and the campaign type all affect delivery. Two people searching from the same town can see different results because of device, query, timing, settings and other auction signals.

How the main campaign choices differ
| Option | Best fit | Control and setup | Potential placements | Measurement emphasis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Search campaign with location assets | Advertisers wanting keyword, ad and budget controls while adding local information | Standard Search setup plus a linked location source and location assets | Search and eligible local search placements; exact availability varies by account and settings | Clicks, calls, directions, website actions and other configured conversions |
| Smart campaign | Small businesses that prefer simplified setup and automated management | Smart mode, linked Business Profile, goal, keyword themes, locations and budget | Google Search and Maps | Goal and local actions reported by the campaign |
| Performance Max for store goals | Businesses optimizing for visits, store sales or other physical-store outcomes | Provide locations, budget and creative assets; Google automates bids, placements and asset combinations | Google properties and networks selected by the system | Store visits, store sales and local actions where eligible and configured |
These options are not a guaranteed performance ranking. Google’s documentation explains setup and delivery mechanics, not a controlled head-to-head result that would make one option universally better.
There is also a difference between where an ad can appear and what the campaign optimizes. A Search campaign may use a location to support a website lead while still giving you keyword-level controls. Performance Max for store goals may use many Google surfaces because the system is trying to generate store visits or sales. Smart campaigns simplify the inputs to a goal, keyword themes, locations and budget. Selecting a campaign solely because its ad can show on Maps overlooks that optimization difference.
Which option should you choose?
Choose Search with location assets for deliberate control
Use a Search campaign with location assets when you need to manage keyword themes or match types, write separate ads for services, set bids or budgets by campaign, and inspect search-term or geographic performance in detail. This route is usually the clearest fit for a business that wants local visibility but still operates a conventional, controllable Search account.
It is also appropriate when the primary outcome is a website lead or phone call and the store location is supporting information rather than the sole objective. Configure the relevant conversion actions and make sure the location asset is attached to the campaigns that should use it. Separate campaigns can be useful when branches, service areas or budgets require different messaging, although the exact structure should follow the account’s needs rather than a fixed template.
Search is the better starting point when you need to answer questions such as which service keyword produced a call, which town generated qualified enquiries, or which landing page converted. The added control comes with management work: you must maintain keywords, ads, landing pages, bids or bidding strategy, negative terms where appropriate, and geographic exclusions.

Choose a Smart campaign for a simpler, automated setup
A Smart campaign is available to advertisers using Smart mode. Google’s setup requires a linked Business Profile and asks you to select a goal, add keyword themes, choose locations and set a budget. Google describes Smart campaigns as eligible to appear on Search and Maps. The creation flow is documented at Create a Smart Search campaign.
This is a sensible choice when you do not want to maintain a detailed keyword and bidding structure. The trade-off is less granular control over how Google manages themes, matching and delivery than a manually structured Search campaign provides. Before choosing it, confirm that the Business Profile is the correct one and that the selected goal reflects the action you can actually handle, such as calls, visits or website enquiries.
Smart campaigns can report actions taken on a Business Profile after an ad exposure or click. Those local actions are useful signals, but they should not be confused with confirmed revenue. A direction request, for example, indicates intent to visit; it does not prove that the person arrived or purchased.

Choose Performance Max for store goals for store-focused automation
Performance Max for store goals is designed around physical-store outcomes. You provide locations, a budget and ad assets; Google then automates bids, placements and combinations of those assets across Google properties and networks. Its stated optimization targets include store visits, store sales and local actions. Review the current eligibility and setup requirements in About Performance Max for store goals.
Select this path when your measurement and business strategy are centered on in-person outcomes and you accept broad, automated placement decisions. It is a poor fit if you require every keyword, placement or ad variation to be chosen manually. Supply complete, accurate creative and location information, because the system uses those inputs when assembling ads across its eligible surfaces.
Store-focused automation also requires realistic measurement expectations. If the account cannot reliably connect advertising with store visits or sales, use the local actions and other available signals as directional evidence and avoid claiming that every reported action is a sale.
How Google Maps advertising fits in
Google documents two relevant Maps formats: promoted pins and map search ads. Promoted pins require a linked Business Profile. Map search ads require location assets and can be served through multiple campaign types. The requirements and format descriptions are in How to advertise in Google Maps.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A promoted pin can help a physical location stand out while a person is browsing the map. A map search ad is tied to a search or map result and depends on the campaign and location assets that make the account eligible. Neither format means that the Business Profile has become a campaign; the campaign still controls budget, targeting and optimization.
That distinction explains why linking a profile does not automatically create one universal “profile ad.” The profile enables location information and certain formats, while the campaign determines bidding, targeting, automation and reporting.
Set up local advertising step by step
1. Audit the Business Profile first
- Confirm the business name, street address, phone number and opening hours are current.
- Check that the location is the one customers should visit and that duplicate or closed locations are not connected.
- Make sure the profile is eligible to be linked to the Google Ads account you will use.
- For multiple branches, verify which locations should be included in each campaign rather than linking every branch by default.
Google draws location information for location assets from Business Profile and Maps data. An incorrect phone number, address or schedule can make a correctly delivered ad less useful. A customer who follows an outdated address or calls a disconnected number may be counted as an interaction while experiencing a failed visit.
2. Pick the customer action you will optimize
Write down the primary action before selecting a campaign: a phone call, a request for directions, a website enquiry, a store visit or a store sale. Then verify that the chosen campaign can report and, where supported, optimize for that action.

Define what “qualified” means before launch. For calls, it might be a conversation of useful length or a booked appointment; for forms, it might be a serviceable address and valid contact details. Google’s listed local interactions are billing and reporting events, not a substitute for your own sales-quality review.
3. Connect the location source and assets
- In Google Ads, open the campaign or account’s asset controls.
- Connect the appropriate Business Profile location source, or select an existing linked source.
- Add location assets to the campaigns that should show the address, call option or business-details link.
- Review the preview and verify that the displayed location and phone details are correct.
- Confirm that only the intended branches and service locations are eligible for each campaign.
The exact menu labels can change as Google updates the interface, so use the current Assets and campaign settings pages rather than assuming that a profile link alone activates every format. If an expected location does not appear, check account access, profile eligibility, asset association and campaign eligibility before changing bids.
4. Configure geography deliberately
Set the areas where customers can realistically visit or where you can serve them. For a storefront, that may be a radius or selected towns; for a service-area business, it may be the communities you actually cover.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Smart campaign targeting can reach people physically in, regularly in or showing interest in selected places. Google says its location targeting uses multiple signals—including users’ settings, devices and behavior—and is a best effort rather than a guarantee of 100% accuracy. The explanation appears in Location settings in Smart campaigns.
After launch, inspect geographic reports and exclude areas that produce irrelevant clicks or calls. Do not assume that a selected city boundary perfectly describes every impression. A person outside your service area may search for a selected place, while a potential customer inside it may be classified differently because of device or behavior signals.
5. Add the campaign-specific inputs
- Search: keyword structure, ad copy, landing pages, bids or bidding strategy, and location assets.
- Smart: campaign goal, keyword themes, locations and budget.
- Performance Max for store goals: locations, budget, creative assets and the store-related goals and data sources available to the account.
Use ad text and landing pages that match the local promise. If the ad highlights a branch, the destination should make that branch’s address, hours and contact path easy to confirm. If multiple locations share a website, make it obvious which branch serves the searcher instead of forcing the visitor to hunt through a generic location list.
6. Verify measurement before increasing budget
Check that calls, direction requests, website enquiries and store-related actions are appearing in the appropriate reports. Smart campaigns can report actions taken on a Business Profile after an ad exposure or click; Google describes these in Location actions for Smart campaigns.
Use the same geography and time window when comparing campaigns. Record spend, impressions, clicks, calls, direction requests, qualified leads and sales separately. A lower cost per click is not automatically better if it produces fewer qualified customers. Allow enough time and volume for a meaningful comparison, but do not keep spending on an obviously irrelevant area while waiting for a perfect data set.
Keep a change log for budgets, location exclusions, hours, phone numbers and landing pages. Without it, a later improvement or decline can be incorrectly attributed to the campaign type when the real cause was a location or offer change.
What you pay for and what to compare
For local search ads, Google lists CPC billing for several local interactions: opening location details, requesting directions, clicking to call from mobile and visiting the website. The charge is tied to the interaction defined for the format, not to a promise that every impression will generate a store visit.
That means “cost per click” may represent different kinds of intent. A website click can be an early research action; a call may be highly valuable for an urgent service; a direction request may indicate a nearby shopper. Report each interaction separately and connect it to downstream outcomes where your systems permit.

A practical decision rule
- Need keyword and ad control plus local information? Start with Search and location assets.
- Want the simplest Search-and-Maps setup and accept automation? Consider a Smart campaign, provided you use Smart mode and can link the Business Profile.
- Measure physical-store outcomes and want Google to automate delivery across its properties? Evaluate Performance Max for store goals.
- Primarily need a listing to be accurate and discoverable? Improve the Business Profile first; linking it is an advertising prerequisite in some campaigns, not an ad campaign by itself.
Whichever route you choose, keep the profile accurate, define one primary customer action, monitor geographic quality and judge the campaign by qualified local outcomes rather than by the label “Business Profile ads.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Google Business Profile ads a separate Google Ads campaign type?
No. Google’s documentation describes the Business Profile as a listing and location-information source. Ads use a linked profile or location assets within campaign types such as Search, Smart campaigns or Performance Max for store goals.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do local search ads appear only in Google Maps?
No. Google says local search ads may appear on Google Search and Google Maps for nearby queries. Other local-ad formats and campaigns can have additional eligible Google surfaces, so placement depends on the campaign and account settings.
How do I get my business to show in Google Maps ads?
Link an eligible Business Profile where required, add location assets for campaigns that use them, choose an eligible campaign, and set accurate locations, budget and creative. Eligibility and auction conditions still determine whether an ad appears.
What interactions can I be charged for?
Google documents CPC charges for several local interactions, including opening location details, requesting directions, mobile click-to-call and website clicks. The applicable interaction and eligibility vary by format and campaign.
Should a small business choose Smart or Search with location assets?
Choose Smart when a simplified setup and automated management are more valuable than granular control. Choose Search with location assets when you need detailed keyword, ad, budget or geographic management and reporting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs Performance Max for store goals best for every local business?
No. It is intended for businesses focused on physical-store outcomes such as store visits, store sales and local actions, with Google automating bids, placements and asset combinations. It is not ideal when manual keyword or placement control is essential.
Can location targeting reach people outside my selected area?
It can. Google says Smart campaign targeting uses signals such as user settings, devices and behavior and is a best effort, not a guarantee of 100% accuracy. Review geographic reports and exclude irrelevant areas.
What should I measure besides clicks?
Track calls, direction requests, location-detail interactions, website enquiries, qualified leads, store visits and sales separately. Compare the outcomes that matter to the business using the same geography and time period.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A Business Profile is not a standalone ad campaign. Link it and use location assets when you need local information in ads. Choose Search with location assets for control, Smart campaigns for a simpler Search-and-Maps setup, or Performance Max for store goals when automated, store-focused delivery fits your measurement. Judge the choice by qualified calls, directions, leads, visits or sales—not by a universal CPC claim.
