The headline is misleading. Google Assistant’s “Tell Me a Story” feature was not newly freed from Google Home in 2026. Google announced the phone version on April 25, 2019, for Android and iOS. The announcement said it was available in English in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and India.
What has changed is the distinction between the old, prerecorded “Tell Me a Story” library and Google’s newer Gemini Live storytelling experience on Google Home devices. They are different features with different requirements.
How to use the original “Tell Me a Story” command
The documented command is:
Hey Google, tell me a story.
You can also try:
Hey Google, tell me a bedtime story.
Google Assistant documentation lists several variations, including:
Tell me a storyTell me a bedtime storyTell me a princess storyTell me the Hansel and Gretel story
On the historical phone implementation, Google said you needed the latest version of Google Play Books for Android or iOS to listen to the stories. The experience was a library of short, family-friendly recordings—not a general-purpose AI system that could invent any plot on demand.

What stories were available?
The older library included examples such as Let’s Be Firefighters!, Robot Rampage, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and Beauty & The Beast. Google said the selection would expand.
That matters when troubleshooting. Asking for a very specific title or genre did not mean Assistant could generate a new story. It could only play a compatible story from the available catalog, and availability could vary by account, country, language, app version, and the state of Google’s service.
There is no documented “Tell Me a Story” switch
Google’s current support documentation does not show a dedicated Settings toggle, menu, or button named “Tell Me a Story.” The documented activation method is the voice command itself.

So, if you are looking through the Google app or Google Home app for a “Tell Me a Story” setting, you are unlikely to find one. Use the command first, then check the practical compatibility items below if nothing happens.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Language and country | The 2019 phone announcement named English availability in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and India. Google did not document universal availability. |
| Assistant activation | Say “Hey Google” clearly, or open Assistant manually and speak the request. |
| Google Play Books | The historical phone experience required the latest Play Books app on Android or iOS. |
| Exact wording | Start with “Hey Google, tell me a story” before trying more specific variations. |
| Service availability | An old catalog feature may not behave identically on current devices or accounts. |
What Google Home offers now: Gemini Live storytelling
Google’s current Google Home documentation describes a newer, interactive option through Gemini Live. Instead of selecting a prerecorded story, you can ask Gemini to create one and continue changing it during the conversation.
A documented example is:
Hey Google, let’s chat. Tell me a story about a boy and his pet dragon.
You can then add a direction such as:
Have them go searching for the magic crystal.
During a Gemini Live session, you can interrupt, pause, change the subject, and ask follow-up questions. The device listens for up to 15 seconds after responding, which allows the conversation to continue without repeating the wake phrase every time.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Requirements for Gemini Live
Gemini Live is not simply a free replacement for the old phone feature. Google currently lists these requirements:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Google Home app version 4.1 or later.
- A switch from Google Assistant to the Gemini for Home voice assistant.
- A Standard or Advanced Google Home Premium plan.
Google says the core Gemini for Home assistant upgrade is included with compatible devices at no extra cost, but Gemini Live requires a Google Home Premium subscription.
Google’s listed Gemini Live-compatible devices include:
- Google Home Speaker (2026)
- Nest Hub (2nd Gen)
- Nest Audio
- Nest Mini (2nd Gen)
- Nest Hub Max
- Google Nest Hub (1st gen)
- Google Home Mini (1st gen)
Gemini Live limitations to know
Gemini Live is more flexible than the old story catalog, but it has important boundaries:
- It cannot multitask with media playback. Google lists media playback as an activity during which Gemini Live cannot be used.
- Normal actions are not supported inside the live conversation. Say “Hey Google” to end the live chat and submit a command normally.
- It ends after inactivity. Silence for about 15 seconds ends the session.
- You can end it manually. Say
Thank you,Stop, orI’m done.
Do not confuse Gemini Live with Continued Conversation
Continued Conversation is a separate feature. It keeps the microphone open for roughly 10 seconds after a normal Assistant or Gemini response, so you can ask a follow-up without saying “Hey Google” again.
The current Google Home path is:
Google Home app → Home Settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant → Continued Conversation

Continued Conversation is not an interactive storytelling mode and does not turn the old “Tell Me a Story” library into an AI story generator. It can also end or require a fresh wake phrase during phone calls, alarms or timers, and media playback or control.
Why several online descriptions conflict
Some recent articles claim that “Tell Me a Story” arrived on phones in May 2026. That conflicts with Google’s own April 25, 2019 announcement, which explicitly says the feature was already available on Android and iOS phones.
Another repeated description says the feature was confined to Google Home. Google’s 2019 announcement separated the phone story playback feature from Read Along, a Home experience that could read compatible Disney Little Golden Books aloud with sound effects. Read Along was the Home-specific feature—not the general “Tell Me a Story” command.
The safest way to describe the situation is therefore:
- Old Assistant feature: a prerecorded story library available by voice command, including on phones in the documented 2019 rollout.
- Current Gemini Live feature: interactive, generated storytelling on compatible Google Home devices, subject to Google Home Premium and other requirements.

The Bottom Line
“Tell Me a Story” was not a new 2026 phone release, and it was never accurately described as a Google Home-only feature. The original Assistant command reached Android and iOS in 2019 and played stories from a limited family-friendly catalog, with regional and app requirements.
If you want an AI-generated story with follow-up plot changes, look at Gemini Live on compatible Google Home hardware instead. That experience is current and interactive, but it requires Gemini for Home and a Standard or Advanced Google Home Premium plan.
