Cursor is the closest documented alternative if you want an agent-centered coding editor. Its agent can explore a project, edit files, run terminal commands and, for larger jobs, coordinate delegated work. If you would rather keep your current editor, the GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code combination provides a documented route to agentic workflows with several supported agent harnesses. Terminal-first tools such as Claude Code and OpenAI Codex are adjacent options, but the cited product pages do not provide enough detail for a fair feature, pricing or performance comparison.
The right choice depends less on a generic “best AI” ranking than on where you want the agent to run, how you review changes, which editor and source-control systems you already use, and what your current plan permits. This guide compares those documented workflows without claiming that one product writes better code than another.
What Google Antigravity is—and what an alternative must replace
Google presents Antigravity IDE as an agentic development environment, not simply an autocomplete plug-in. Its documented workflow lets agents operate across an editor, terminal and browser. The IDE overview also describes asynchronous local agents, editor-based AI features, browser-agent capabilities and structured artifacts such as plans and code diffs. Those artifacts are important because they give a developer something to inspect between an agent’s request and the final merge.
Google documents additional product surfaces, including an Antigravity CLI, on its Antigravity home page. The IDE overview explicitly says the IDE is not supported for enterprise customers; Google directs enterprise users to Antigravity 2.0 or the CLI instead. Therefore, “an Antigravity alternative” can mean different things for an individual developer and for an organization that requires enterprise support.

Do not treat the API and desktop IDE as one commercial product. Google’s Antigravity agent documentation for the Gemini API describes a preview Interactions API with consumption-based charges tied to underlying model tokens and tools, plus token-budget controls. That statement does not establish the price, quota or allowance of the desktop IDE. Any cost comparison must keep those surfaces separate.
Quick comparison of the documented alternatives
| Option | Where the agent lives | Documented work it can perform | Review and control clues | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Antigravity IDE | Standalone agentic development environment | Editor, terminal and browser operation; asynchronous local agents; browser-agent features | Plans, code diffs and other structured artifacts | Developers willing to adopt Google’s dedicated environment |
| Cursor coding agent | Agent-centered code editor | Independent coding tasks, codebase work, file edits and terminal commands; coordinator support for larger tasks | Agent interaction in the editor; inspect edits and command results before accepting them | Readers seeking the closest editor-centered workflow |
| GitHub Copilot agents with VS Code | Agent inside an existing editor, with harness choices documented by VS Code | Agentic workflows through Copilot and supported harnesses; exact actions depend on product, account, editor version and configuration | Editor review, source-control workflow and harness-specific controls | Teams that want to retain VS Code and choose among supported agents |
| Claude Code or OpenAI Codex | Generally discussed as terminal-oriented coding agents | Not detailed enough in the cited primary pages for a full comparison | Not established by the cited documentation | Developers evaluating terminal-first work separately |
The table is a workflow map, not a performance ranking. The available documentation contains no controlled, independent head-to-head result for code quality, task completion or developer productivity.
How to compare an Antigravity alternative
Use the following questions while trialing a tool. They expose practical differences that a feature-name comparison hides.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Where does the agent live?
A standalone environment changes your editor, command surface and project habits. An editor-integrated agent keeps your existing keybindings, extensions and source-control view. A terminal-first agent can fit scripts, remote shells and multiplexed sessions, but may require you to assemble more of the review experience yourself. Decide this before comparing model names.
Where does work run?
Separate documented execution claims from assumptions. Google describes Antigravity’s agents as asynchronous and local in the IDE overview. Cursor documents terminal-command execution by its agent, but the cited overview does not establish a universal local-versus-cloud policy for every operation or plan. VS Code documents available agent harnesses and cloud targets, while noting that availability depends on product, account, editor version and configuration. Verify the execution location for the exact plan and harness you intend to use.
What can the agent actually do?
Check each capability independently: project exploration, planning, file edits, terminal commands, browser interaction, test or check execution and delegation to other agents. “Agent mode” is not a standardized capability set. One product may plan and edit locally while another sends work to a cloud target or exposes a different approval model.

How do you review changes?
Look for the concrete review object: a plan, patch, code diff, command transcript, test result or generated artifact. Confirm whether the tool pauses for approval before modifying files or running commands, and whether you can reject one action without discarding the rest of a task. These details matter more than a marketing label because they determine how safely an agent can operate in a real repository.

Inventory the systems your team already uses: editor extensions, Git hosting, issue tracking, browser automation and preferred model or harness. GitHub Copilot and VS Code expose a choice of documented harnesses, but support can vary by account and version. Confirm the exact combination rather than assuming that a feature shown in a general product page is included in your plan.
What are the limits and terms?
Check price, included usage, rate limits, token or request caps, overage rules, data controls and enterprise eligibility separately. The cited documentation does not establish a like-for-like price matrix. Current terms can change, so use the official plan page immediately before adopting a tool.
Cursor: the closest documented editor-centered alternative
Cursor’s Agent overview describes an agent that can complete coding tasks independently, edit code and run terminal commands. That combination makes it the nearest documented workflow match for a developer who wants the agent to inhabit the coding editor rather than an external chat window. The documentation supports a feature comparison with Antigravity; it does not establish that Cursor is more capable or produces better code.
What the Cursor workflow looks like
- Give the agent a repository-level goal. Phrase the task in terms of the desired behavior, relevant constraints and the checks that must pass. A goal such as “add request validation to the API and update its tests” gives the agent a target that can be inspected in a diff.
- Let it inspect before it edits. Ask for the files, dependency paths and existing tests it plans to use. This creates an opportunity to correct a wrong assumption before changes spread across the project.
- Review proposed edits in the editor. Inspect the diff by file, paying attention to generated configuration, dependency changes and error handling. Keep unrelated formatting churn out of the change.
- Control terminal commands. The documented agent can run terminal commands. Treat installs, migrations, code generation and destructive commands as approval points; review the command and its output rather than accepting a blanket instruction.
- Run the project’s checks. Ask the agent to execute the repository’s existing test, lint and type-check commands, then inspect failures yourself. A passing command only proves that the command completed under the current environment.
Coordinator support for larger work
Cursor’s documentation also describes a project coordinator agent that can plan and delegate work for larger tasks. Delegation can make a multi-part change easier to organize, but it introduces another review boundary: check the coordinator’s plan, the scope assigned to each delegated task and the way results are combined. Delegation is a workflow feature, not evidence of superior code quality.

When Cursor is a sensible first trial
- You want an editor built around agent interaction rather than adding one to an established editor.
- You value a single workspace for code exploration, file edits and terminal execution.
- You have larger tasks where a visible plan and delegated subtasks could reduce manual coordination.
- You are prepared to compare the exact current plan limits and model availability before committing.
GitHub Copilot and VS Code: keep the editor you already use
The existing-editor route is documented in two places. GitHub’s Copilot agents documentation covers agent concepts and workflows, while Visual Studio Code’s agent-harness documentation lists Copilot, Anthropic Claude and OpenAI Codex harnesses, together with cloud targets for available agents. This is not one fixed product configuration: supported features and availability can depend on your product, account, editor version and configuration.

Why this route differs from a standalone IDE
You keep the editor layout, extensions, source-control integration and project settings your team already understands. The trade-off is that you must identify which harness is active, what permissions it has and where its work executes. Two developers using the same editor may see different agent options because their accounts or versions differ.
A practical VS Code evaluation sequence
- Update and identify the editor build. Record the VS Code version and the account used for the agent. Agent support is version- and account-sensitive.
- Choose the documented harness. In the agent tooling described by VS Code, select the harness that matches your organization’s approved provider and workflow. Do not assume that installing an extension enables every harness.
- Open a disposable branch or sample repository. Start with a codebase that has a reproducible test command and no production credentials.
- Ask for a plan before broad edits. Require the agent to name files, dependencies, commands and validation steps. Compare the plan with your issue or ticket.
- Review the source-control diff. Use VS Code’s normal diff and staging views. Reject generated files, lockfile churn or unrelated refactors before staging.
- Validate the execution target. If the selected harness offers a cloud target, confirm what is sent, what environment is used and which files or secrets are available. The VS Code documentation identifies targets, but the precise policy belongs to the harness and account configuration.
- Run checks locally or in the approved environment. Record the command, environment and result so another developer can reproduce the validation.
When Copilot and VS Code fit best
- Your team has standardized on VS Code and wants to preserve its extensions and review habits.
- Different projects need different supported harnesses or model providers.
- Source-control review and existing repository permissions are more important than moving to a new editor.
- You can administer account, version and configuration differences across the team.
Claude Code and Codex: adjacent terminal-first choices
Cursor’s help page on coding agents names Claude Code and OpenAI Codex as other coding agents. That is enough to identify them as adjacent options for a terminal-oriented evaluation, but not enough to compare their commands, execution environments, pricing, model access or review controls here. The cited primary product pages do not provide enough detail for that comparison.
If your workflow is terminal-first, evaluate one of these tools separately using the same questions: how it reads a repository, what it can modify, which commands it may run, how approvals work, where data is processed and how a patch reaches code review. Do not infer answers from the fact that a tool is called an “agent,” and do not use the limited mention above as a superiority claim.
Match the tool to your development workflow
Solo developer starting a new project
Begin with Cursor if you want the shortest documented path to an agent-centered editor. Test a small vertical slice: have the agent inspect the project, make one feature change, run checks and present a diff. If changing editors would disrupt your setup, use the Copilot and VS Code route instead and keep the same acceptance test.
Team with an established VS Code setup
Start with the existing-editor route. A team can preserve extensions, repository conventions and normal pull-request review while testing different supported harnesses. Standardize the editor version, account type, permission policy and approved commands before comparing results across developers.
Large repository or multi-part migration
Cursor’s documented coordinator support is relevant when a task naturally divides into independent pieces. Require a written plan, define file ownership for each subtask and merge through ordinary diffs and tests. In VS Code, reproduce the same discipline manually or through the harness features available to your account.

Browser-dependent development
Antigravity’s official overview explicitly includes browser-agent capabilities. That makes it the reference point if browser operation is central to your workflow. The alternative documentation cited here establishes editor, terminal or harness workflows, not equivalent browser automation, so test that requirement independently rather than assuming parity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsEnterprise deployment
Check support status first. Google states that Antigravity IDE is not supported for enterprise customers and points those users to Antigravity 2.0 or CLI. For any alternative, verify organization-level controls, data handling, identity integration and contractual terms on the current official plan and security documentation. None of those commercial or governance details is established by the workflow pages cited above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safe trial checklist
Use a controlled trial that produces evidence about your own repository instead of relying on feature names.
- Choose a non-production repository or branch. Remove credentials, customer data and unrelated proprietary material.
- Write three representative tasks. Include one cross-file feature, one bug with a failing test and one maintenance task such as a dependency or configuration update.
- Define acceptance checks first. Record the exact test, lint, type-check, build and security commands that must pass.
- Require a plan and a bounded diff. Ask the agent to list intended files and avoid unrelated refactoring.
- Observe command permissions. Note whether the tool asks before installing packages, changing databases, deleting files or contacting external services.
- Record execution location and account. For cloud or harness-based work, document the target, repository data sent and environment assumptions.
- Review the final patch manually. Check error paths, authentication, input validation, generated files, dependency licenses and test coverage.
- Measure operational fit. Record how often you had to redirect the agent, how clear its artifacts were and whether another developer could reproduce the result. Do not convert these observations into a universal benchmark.
Limits, pricing and enterprise questions to verify
No reliable like-for-like price, quota or overage matrix is established by the cited documentation. Before purchase or rollout, open the current official plan pages for each product and record:
- Recurring price and billing region.
- Included requests, tokens, model access or agent runs.
- Rate limits, monthly caps and overage behavior.
- Whether background, asynchronous or cloud execution consumes a separate allowance.
- Which editor versions, accounts and harnesses are eligible.
- Data-retention, training-use and repository-access controls.
- Enterprise support, identity management, audit logs and contractual terms.
For Antigravity specifically, keep the Gemini API’s consumption-based Interactions API charges separate from the desktop IDE. The API documentation discusses underlying model-token and tool charges and token budgets; it does not provide a desktop-IDE price or quota. Treat any number found on an API page as an API number unless the vendor explicitly ties it to the IDE.
Common mistakes when replacing Antigravity
Choosing by the word “agent”
Agent labels conceal differences in planning, command execution, browser access, delegation and approval controls. Compare the concrete workflow, not the label.

- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Assuming editor integration means identical permissions
An agent inside VS Code may use a different harness, account or cloud target from another developer’s setup. Capture those variables before comparing outcomes.
Granting terminal access without a boundary
Use a disposable branch, least-privilege credentials and explicit approval for destructive or networked commands. Review command output as carefully as the code diff.
Comparing API prices with desktop plans
Consumption-based API billing and an IDE subscription or allowance answer different questions. Keep the products and units separate.

Decision framework
| Your priority | First tool to trial | Reason | What to verify next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agent-centered editor with terminal execution | Cursor | Its documented agent edits code, runs terminal commands and offers coordinator support for larger tasks. | Current plan limits, model availability, command approvals and execution policy. |
| Keep an established VS Code workflow | GitHub Copilot with a supported VS Code harness | It adds documented agent workflows without requiring a new editor, with harness choices available in VS Code. | Account eligibility, editor version, harness permissions, cloud target and data controls. |
| Browser operation is a core requirement | Evaluate Antigravity against alternatives in a focused trial | Google explicitly documents browser-agent capabilities for Antigravity; equivalent support is not established for the alternatives cited here. | Enterprise eligibility, browser permissions, review artifacts and current availability. |
| Terminal-first development | Run a separate Claude Code or Codex evaluation | They are identified as coding-agent options, but the cited material does not support a detailed comparison. | Primary documentation for commands, execution, approvals, pricing and integrations. |
Start with the row that matches your working environment, then run the same bounded tasks and review process across candidates. That approach gives you a defensible adoption decision without pretending that similarly named agent features are interchangeable.
