Google’s October 15, 2026 AI Search update makes source links more prominent, adds official-site context, expands timely article carousels and gives related stories and creators more visibility. For site owners, the practical response is to measure AI-surface impressions in Search Console, decide deliberately whether to remain included, and keep monitoring ordinary Search, Discover and spam signals. Google Ads are already appearing in more AI Overviews, while ads in AI Mode remain a US test. ChatGPT requires separate measurement because current first-party specifications were not established alongside Google’s announcements.
What changed in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
On October 15, 2026, Google said it was making AI Search “simpler, more visual, and more engaging.” The changes affect both AI Overviews and AI Mode, but availability can vary by country, language and query.
Inline links move higher in answers
Google says AI responses now include more inline links and show those links higher in the response more often. This should give searchers a clearer route to the underlying page instead of requiring them to find sources at the end of an answer.
Official pages can receive a dedicated section
Google is testing a top section containing one or two official pages for some queries. The section can include context explaining why a particular link is useful. A brand or organization therefore has a potential way to be identified as the authoritative source, but inclusion is determined by Google and is not guaranteed.

Timely and related articles get richer presentation
Timely article carousels are rolling out to more locations and languages. Related-article links are receiving larger thumbnails and a more clickable presentation, giving publishers another route to discovery beyond the main generated paragraph. Google also says creator context is becoming more prominent.
Why these surfaces matter to publishers
Google reported on June 3, 2026 that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly users. Those are Google-reported global usage figures, not a promise that every site will receive traffic. An appearance, citation or impression still needs to be evaluated separately from a click, a visit or an accurate description of the source.
How to track AI visibility in Search Console
What the generative-AI report provides
Google’s Search Console generative-AI performance reporting provides impressions and identifies pages that appear in AI responses, including the countries in which they appear. Google says additional metrics may be added over time. The report is evidence of visibility, not proof that a user clicked a link or that an answer represented the page correctly.

How the inclusion control works
The Search generative AI control is available worldwide as of August 31, 2026. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative-AI features in Discover. Inclusion is the default: an included site can receive impressions and visits from those surfaces. Excluding a site prevents its content from appearing in, or grounding, responses in those features, so the site gives up traffic and impressions from them.
Google says a control change generally takes a few days. Exclusion usually takes effect within one to two days after the control goes live, although caching and propagation can take longer.
A measurement workflow that avoids misleading conclusions
- Record a page-level and country-level baseline for generative-AI impressions before changing any setting.
- Annotate the date and reason for an inclusion or exclusion change in your reporting system.
- Compare AI-surface impressions with ordinary Google Search, Discover and referral traffic rather than combining them into one total.
- Inspect which pages and countries are appearing, then review the corresponding answers for accuracy and context.
- Preserve screenshots or exports when an interface, citation or carousel changes; volatile layouts can make later reconstruction difficult.
What is changing in Google Discover
Google’s Search Central changelog records a February 2026 Discover Core Update and added guidance on increasing the likelihood that content appears in Discover. Discover remains algorithmic; meeting technical requirements does not guarantee distribution.
Rank #3
Google says it uses schema.org markup and the og:image meta tag when determining image thumbnails in Search and Discover. Publishers should therefore provide accurate, high-quality image metadata and make sure the selected image represents the page rather than relying on a misleading crop.

Where Google Ads appear in AI experiences
AI Overviews
Google Ads expanded Ads in AI Overviews to desktop and to additional countries during 2025. Eligibility, placement and appearance can vary by query and market, so an ad shown beside an AI answer is not evidence that every AI Overview is monetized.
AI Mode
Google has been testing ads in AI Mode in the United States for deeper, more complex questions. This remains a test rather than a worldwide availability statement.
Demand Gen placement controls
Demand Gen campaigns let advertisers choose placements across YouTube, Discover, the Google Display Network and Gmail, including YouTube Shorts. Those controls are separate from whether a particular ad is selected for an AI Overview or AI Mode response.

SEO priorities for AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT
Google’s guidance keeps ordinary SEO at the center. The most durable priorities are:
Best Value
- Publish non-commodity information. Add original reporting, first-hand evidence, useful analysis or local expertise instead of rewriting material that already exists.
- Cover the formats people use to decide. Google specifically highlights local, shopping, image and video content as areas where useful, well-structured material can help.
- Protect page experience. Fast, usable pages with clear navigation make it easier for people and systems to understand the source.
- Use accurate media and structured data. Mark up the page appropriately and provide a representative
og:image. - Follow spam policies. Google says its SpamBrain system is an AI-based spam-prevention system and warns that sites violating spam policies may rank lower or not appear in results at all. Those policies also apply to generative-AI responses.
ChatGPT should be treated as a separate channel. The current authoritative material available for this topic does not establish current ChatGPT citation behavior, referral reporting or advertising availability, so do not assume that a Google AI Overview citation will translate into a ChatGPT citation. Publish distinctive, evidence-backed content and measure ChatGPT referrals independently from Google surfaces.

“Google poisoning tracking tools” is not a single official Google product category. The defensible approach is a monitoring program that combines Search Console, analytics, rank observation and manual review.
Signals worth watching
- Sudden query-level ranking changes, especially for pages that previously held stable positions.
- Manual-action notices or other indications that a spam policy issue is affecting the site.
- Unusual growth, loss or topic mismatch in the site’s inbound link profile.
- AI answers that repeat false, manipulated or outdated claims about the site, its products or its subject area.
- Unexpected differences between ordinary Search visibility, Discover visibility and AI-surface appearances.
Keep evidence for each incident: the query, date, device or country when available, the displayed answer, the cited URL and the page that should have been represented. Treat a generated answer as an observation to verify, not as an authoritative statement of what the page says.
A practical decision rule for inclusion
Leave inclusion enabled when the potential discovery and referral value of AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover outweighs the risk of losing control over how a short answer summarizes the page. Consider exclusion only after establishing a baseline and documenting the business reason, because exclusion removes both appearances and traffic from the covered features. Recheck the decision after Google changes the interfaces, reporting or propagation behavior.
