Google AI Edge Gallery lets you download and try supported AI models that run directly on a compatible phone. It is an experimental, open-source model playground—not a single all-purpose chatbot, and not a promise that every model or feature will run quickly on every device. The current minimum operating systems listed by the project are Android 12 and iOS 17; check the official project page for the latest requirements.
What Google AI Edge Gallery is
Google AI Edge Gallery is an app for exploring on-device AI models. Rather than providing one fixed assistant, it offers a way to discover, download, load, and experiment with supported models on a phone. Google describes the project as an experimental beta, so features and behavior can change between releases.
The project uses Google AI Edge tools and the LiteRT runtime, with Hugging Face integration for model discovery and downloads. LiteRT-LM documentation discusses model families such as Gemma, EmbeddingGemma, Llama, Phi, and Qwen, but runtime support does not mean every model is available in Gallery or that every Gallery release exposes every runtime capability. Check the app’s model list and compatibility information before planning around a particular model.
What you can do with it
Current project and store listings describe more than text chat. The available tools depend on the app version, device, and compatible model; some functions require models with the appropriate capabilities.

- AI Chat and Thinking Mode: Try supported chat models. Google’s listings describe Thinking Mode as beginning with the Gemma 4 family.
- Ask Image: Provide an image to a supported multimodal model and ask questions about it.
- Audio Scribe: Work with audio features such as transcription or translation where supported.
- Instant Media Search and Video Moment Finder: Search photos or locate moments in video using the listed media features.
- Prompt Lab: Experiment with prompts and compare how a supported model responds.
- Model management and benchmarking: Load or manage models and inspect performance measurements on the device.
- Mobile Actions and Tiny Garden: Try additional demos included in the app’s feature listings.
These are showcase features, not guarantees of production-ready behavior or equal availability across Android and iOS. The Google Play listing and Apple App Store listing are the best places to confirm what the current release offers on your platform.
What “fully local” means—and what it does not
For supported models, inference—the processing that generates an answer from your prompt—runs on the device, and Google says an internet connection is not required for that inference. This can be useful when you want to experiment offline or keep the prompt-processing step on your phone.

That does not mean every part of the experience is offline. You need a connection to find and download models, and connected features can communicate beyond the phone. In a May 19, 2026 announcement, Google said Gallery added support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP), local reminder notifications, and persistent chat history. Google described MCP over Streamable HTTP as experimental on Android at that time and said iOS support was coming. Check the current release notes rather than assuming that platform status is unchanged.

With MCP, reasoning and tool selection can happen locally, but a tool request is handled by the configured MCP server, which may be a computer on your home network or a cloud endpoint. Local model inference therefore does not automatically make a connected workflow fully local. Review which server a tool uses and what information it receives before enabling it.

Which phones are compatible?
The project currently lists Android 12 or later and iOS 17 or later as minimum operating-system requirements. Those are software thresholds, not a guarantee that every device meeting them will run every model well. Confirm the current requirements on the official GitHub project and your platform’s store listing, since requirements can change.
Performance depends on both the model and the phone’s hardware. Google Play specifically notes that CPU and GPU capability affect performance. A smaller model may be more practical on a device with limited resources; larger or more demanding models can take longer, use more memory, or fail to load. Model downloads also consume storage. Check the selected model’s size and requirements and leave room for other phone data.

Google’s LiteRT-LM documentation includes measurements for specific hardware. Those are vendor-published results under particular conditions, not independent tests or a prediction of the speed you will see on your own phone. There is no established universal “best phone” for Gallery based on the available evidence.
Should you replace your phone?
No blanket upgrade is justified. If your current phone meets the listed operating-system requirement, install the app and try a model you actually want to use before considering a purchase. Your own experience with that model—whether it loads, how responsive it feels, and whether its storage use is acceptable—is more useful than assuming that a newer phone is necessary.

If you are comparing devices, focus on supported OS version, available memory and storage, and measured performance with the model and task you plan to use. A specification or benchmark for one phone does not establish how another will behave. The app’s experimental status also means that a feature or model available today may change in a later release.

Gallery is a good fit when your priority is trying supported models locally and learning how on-device AI behaves. A cloud assistant may be more convenient if you want a hosted service rather than managing models on your device, but this evidence does not establish a universal quality winner.
What its popularity and benchmarks do—and do not—show
Google reported 500,000 APK downloads in two months in a September 2025 developer blog post announcing the Google Play open beta. That is a company-reported download count, not a measure of unique people, active users, or independent adoption.
Google’s published runtime benchmarks can help illustrate performance on the particular test hardware and conditions described in its documentation. They should not be treated as independent testing or a promise about another phone. No independent controlled performance test or independent privacy audit is established here.
