Google Ads does not use one universal billing date or document type. Your billing country, currency, account eligibility, and selected payment setting determine when money is taken, whether you fund ads in advance, and which records you receive. In Google Ads, open Billing and check Settings to see How you pay before investigating any charge. Google describes three settings where available: postpay, prepay, and monthly invoicing.

The payment setting controls timing; the payment method is the card, bank account, or other instrument used. Keeping those two concepts separate prevents most billing misunderstandings.

Identify your Google Ads payment setting first

Google’s official wording is simple: “Payment settings determine when you pay for your ads.” The setting shown under Billing > Settings > How you pay is the starting point for every charge, receipt, statement, or invoice question. An individual account can temporarily show some settings as unavailable while Google reviews eligibility.

Payment setting When you pay What triggers payment What happens to ad delivery Eligibility considerations
Postpay (formerly automatic payments) After advertising costs accrue The first day of the month or when the payment threshold is reached, whichever comes first Ads continue while the account remains in good standing and the payment method works Availability and payment methods depend on country, currency, and account
Prepay (formerly manual payments) Before the corresponding ads run You add funds in advance; costs are deducted from that balance Ads stop when the prepaid balance is depleted Not available in every country; available methods depend on location
Monthly invoicing After costs accrue on an approved credit line The due date and terms printed on each invoice Delivery is subject to the approved credit line, account status, and payment terms Requires an application, review, and Google-set credit terms

Do not assume that changing a card changes the payment setting. A card is an instrument; postpay, prepay, or monthly invoicing is the arrangement that determines when the instrument or credit line is used.

When does Google Ads charge a postpay account?

Postpay charges are not tied to one fixed monthly date. Google says it charges the primary payment method on the first day of the month or when the account reaches its payment threshold, whichever comes first. That means two accounts can be charged on different days, and one account can be charged more than once in a calendar month.

How the payment threshold works

Google starts an account with a threshold amount. As the account successfully reaches that threshold, Google can increase it, up to a maximum. The threshold therefore may change over time rather than remaining a permanent limit. A charge triggered by the threshold can occur before the first day of the next month.

Why a manual payment may not prevent an automatic charge

You can make a manual payment on a postpay account, but Google may still initiate an automatic payment if its systems have not yet recognized the manual transaction. Processing and recognition are separate events. If both appear, compare the payment entries and receipts in Billing activity before assuming that one is an unauthorized duplicate.

What to check after a postpay charge

  1. Open Billing > Summary and note the charge date and amount.
  2. Open Billing > Transactions or the account’s billing activity view and match the charge to accumulated ad costs, taxes, credits, or adjustments.
  3. Open the individual payment receipt and verify the payment method and transaction reference.
  4. Check Billing > Settings > How you pay to confirm that the account is on postpay and to review the current threshold information shown there.

A statement date is not the same thing as a charge date. Charges can occur throughout the month even though the account summary is generated later.

How prepay balances and ad delivery work

Prepay places money in the account before advertising. As campaigns run, Google deducts the resulting costs from the available balance. When that balance reaches zero, ads stop until you add funds. Prepay is not offered in every billing country, and the available funding methods differ by location and currency.

Managing a low balance

  • Review the current balance in the Billing summary before launching or increasing campaigns.
  • Allow for payment-processing time when adding funds; a payment you have initiated may not be immediately recognized.
  • Check campaign delivery after the balance update. If the balance is still unavailable, do not assume the top-up has posted.
  • Keep the payment receipt for the top-up so support can trace an unrecognized or delayed transaction.

Prepay charges are deductions from an advance balance, not a monthly invoice. A monthly statement can still summarize those transactions, but it does not create a new amount due in the way a monthly-invoicing account does.

What monthly invoicing means

Monthly invoicing is an approved credit arrangement. Google allows an accepted advertiser to accrue costs during the month, then issues an invoice with payment terms and a specific due date. The invoice, not a generic calendar rule, controls when payment is due.

Initial eligibility guidance

Google’s current eligibility guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these initial criteria:

  • An established business that has operated as a registered business for at least one year.
  • An active Google Ads account in good standing for at least six months.
  • At least $5,000 USD per month (or the local-currency equivalent) in any three of the preceding twelve months.

These are screening criteria, not an automatic approval formula. Google reviews the application, decides whether to approve it, and sets the credit line and payment terms. An account that meets the figures can still be declined or offered different terms.

How to pay an invoice

  1. Open the invoice and locate its invoice number, currency, payment instructions, terms, and due date.
  2. Use the payment method and bank or remittance details printed on that invoice.
  3. Include the Google invoice number with the payment. Google specifically distinguishes it from a local tax-invoice number.
  4. Include any relevant credit memo numbers so Google can allocate the payment correctly.
  5. Submit the payment by the stated deadline and retain the confirmation.

Google says invoice terms are typically 30 days, but “typically” is not a substitute for the accepted terms on your account. Follow the exact due date on each invoice. By default, incoming payments may be applied first-in, first-out to the oldest open invoices; some countries do not allow that allocation setting to be changed.

Statements, receipts, and invoices are different documents

Postpay and prepay statements

For most postpay and prepay accounts, Google describes a statement as a record of activity, not a bill. It can show the starting balance, new activity, applicable tax, adjustments such as credits for overdelivery, payments received, and the ending balance. The statement is generated monthly even though individual charges or balance deductions can occur during the month.

Google generally makes the previous month’s statement available by the fifth business day of the following month. Weekends and bank holidays can affect the practical availability date. In most countries these records are not mailed or emailed; you retrieve them from the account when available.

Payment receipts

You do not have to wait for the monthly statement to document a particular payment. Google says an individual payment receipt can be printed from Billing > Summary. Use the receipt when reconciling a card or bank entry that occurred during the current month.

Monthly-invoicing documents

A monthly-invoicing account receives an invoice with a due date and payment terms. Local tax invoices and other tax documents vary by country, so the document format and tax information shown in your account may differ from another advertiser’s records.

Why a charge looks unexpected

Google’s troubleshooter groups several common cases. Investigate each against the payment setting, billing activity, and the relevant receipt rather than treating every unfamiliar amount as the same problem.

“Charged after already initiating a manual payment”

On a postpay account, an automatic payment can be initiated before Google recognizes a manual payment. Compare timestamps, transaction IDs, and how each entry was applied. Keep both confirmations while the transactions settle.

“Charged after you stopped your ads or canceled your account”

Stopping ads prevents new delivery but does not erase costs that accrued before the stop, pending transactions, taxes, or other account adjustments. Review the final billing activity and payment receipt for the period in question.

“Charged for more than average daily budget on some days”

Google’s troubleshooter addresses this as a distinct case. Check the campaign-level cost details and the account’s billing activity for the same dates, then follow the case-specific support instructions if the amount does not reconcile.

“Charged more than once in a month”

Multiple postpay charges can be consistent with threshold billing: the threshold can be reached before the first day of the month, and another charge can occur at the monthly trigger. Compare every payment with the account’s accumulated costs and receipts.

“Charged outside billing cycle”

First identify whether the account is postpay, prepay, or monthly invoicing. A threshold-triggered postpay charge, a prepay top-up, an invoice payment, and a tax or adjustment entry can all appear on different dates. Use the transaction description and receipt to classify the event.

“Charges on bank statement don’t match my Google Ads account”

Bank descriptors can differ from the wording shown in Google Ads. Match the amount, date, payment method, and receipt reference. If no account transaction matches, secure the payment method and contact Google Ads support through the current in-account help path.

Refunds, credits, and duplicate payments

Refund outcomes are scenario-specific. In the double-charge situation covered by Google’s troubleshooter, Google states: “Google can’t refund or cancel the payment, but any additional payment will serve as a credit applied to future advertising spend.” That statement applies to the documented duplicate-payment case; it is not a universal rule for every account credit, overdelivery adjustment, tax correction, or billing dispute.

Before requesting help, gather the account customer ID, payment date, amount, currency, payment method, receipt, and a description of what you expected. Explain whether the entry is a duplicate payment, a campaign-cost discrepancy, a tax document issue, or an invoice allocation problem. The current in-account Billing pages and the invoice itself take precedence over a generic example because Google can change interfaces and support procedures.

Country, currency, tax, and availability caveats

Payment methods, payment settings, tax documents, and invoice formats differ by billing country and currency. Prepay may be unavailable in your country. Monthly invoicing may be unavailable until Google completes an eligibility review. Even when two advertisers use the same setting, their cards, bank-transfer options, tax fields, threshold progression, and document layout can differ.

Use the billing country and currency displayed in the account when reconciling amounts. Do not convert a local-currency charge into a universal dollar figure, and do not assume that a statement is a tax invoice. If your organization requires a particular tax document, check what Google provides for your country and request clarification through support when the document is missing.

A practical reconciliation checklist

  1. Record the disputed bank or card entry exactly as shown, including date, currency, amount, and descriptor.
  2. Confirm Billing > Settings > How you pay.
  3. For postpay, check the monthly trigger and threshold-related entries; for prepay, check balance additions and deductions; for monthly invoicing, check the invoice number and due date.
  4. Open Billing activity and the individual payment receipt.
  5. Separate advertising cost, tax, credit, adjustment, and payment entries.
  6. Check whether the previous month’s statement should already be available by the fifth business day, allowing for weekends and bank holidays.
  7. If the records still do not reconcile, use Google’s case-specific billing troubleshooter or contact Google Ads support with the receipts and transaction references.

This process keeps three dates distinct: the date an ad cost was incurred, the date Google charged or credited the account, and the date a statement or invoice became available.
