Automatic payments (also called postpay) charge your primary payment method as Google Ads costs accrue. Google generally charges when the account reaches its payment threshold or on the first day of the month, whichever comes first. Monthly invoicing is different: it is an application-based credit arrangement in which Google approves a credit line, sends a monthly invoice, and gives you agreed payment terms, typically 30 days. Meeting Google’s initial tests—one year in business, six months of account history in good standing, and at least $5,000 USD in monthly spend during any three of the past 12 months—does not guarantee approval.
What the two Google Ads payment settings mean
Automatic payments (postpay)
With automatic payments, you run ads first and Google collects the accumulated balance from the account’s primary payment method. The charge is triggered when the account reaches its payment threshold or on the first day of a new month, whichever occurs first. A fast-spending account can therefore be charged several times in one month rather than receiving one end-of-month bill.
The threshold is account-, country-, and currency-dependent. Google may raise it over time as the account develops a payment history. The threshold is a trigger for collection, not a monthly spending cap. Your campaigns can continue spending after one charge if they reach the threshold again and remain eligible to serve.

Monthly invoicing
Monthly invoicing is a credit arrangement, not simply a different card-billing interval. Google reviews an application, decides whether to extend credit, sets a credit limit, and specifies payment terms. Approved costs accumulate against that limit. Google then issues an invoice for the billing period, and the advertiser pays by the deadline in the agreement, typically 30 days after invoicing.

The balance can include current accrued costs and unpaid invoices. Depending on the payments profile, other Google products or linked accounts can also draw on the same approved credit line. That makes the available headroom lower than the nominal limit whenever several accounts or products share it.
Automatic payments and monthly invoicing compared
| Decision point | Automatic payments (postpay) | Monthly invoicing |
|---|---|---|
| When money is due | Google automatically charges the primary payment method at the payment threshold or on the first day of the month. | Google sends a monthly invoice; payment is due under the approved agreement, typically within 30 days. |
| How you get access | Availability depends on the account’s billing country, currency, and settings. | An application and Google’s credit review are required; initial criteria are not an approval promise. |
| Cash-flow pattern | Funds can leave the account multiple times in a month when spending repeatedly reaches the threshold. | Costs are consolidated into an invoice, creating a payment delay bounded by the credit line and due date. |
| Payment instrument | The account’s primary payment method; available methods vary by country and currency. | Usually wire transfer or check, with permitted methods and instructions shown for the location and invoice. |
| Main control task | Keep the primary method valid and monitor threshold charges. | Track credit usage, linked-account balances, invoice details, and payment deadlines. |
| What can stop delivery | A failed or unavailable primary payment method can prevent collection and affect account service. | Exceeding the credit terms or missing payment can slow, stop, or suspend ads or related services. |
Google describes the payment setting as the choice that determines when you pay; the payment method is the separate choice of how that payment is made. Changing one does not automatically change the other.
Who can apply for monthly invoicing?
Google’s published requirements are initial screening criteria. They help you decide whether an application is worth preparing, but Google still evaluates the application and the company’s credit history. Local-currency equivalents and account-specific decisions apply.
| Initial requirement | What Google states | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Business age | The business has been registered for at least one year. | Use the legal entity that will be billed and applying for the credit line. |
| Google Ads history | An active account has been in good standing for at least six months. | A newly created account or an account with unresolved compliance or payment problems may not meet this test. |
| Recent spend | At least $5,000 USD per month, or the local-currency equivalent, in any three of the previous 12 months. | The criterion is three qualifying months within the rolling 12-month period, not necessarily three consecutive months. |
| Application structure | The account needs to be linked to a manager account. | Prepare the manager-account relationship before submitting the request. |
| Company contact | A responsible company contact must accept the terms, and the contact’s email must be connected to a Google Account. | Use a monitored business address and a person authorized to accept financial terms. |
| Billing identity | Bill-to details must match the company applying for the credit line. | Do not submit a different legal entity, address, or billing identity merely because it is convenient for campaign management. |
Google also recommends 2-Step Verification before switching to monthly invoicing. The published figures are not a universal qualification guarantee: approval, credit amount, payment terms, supported payment methods, and account availability remain specific to the applicant and market.

How automatic-payment charges occur
- Ads accrue cost. Charges build as campaigns deliver, subject to the account’s normal billing and service controls.
- The threshold is checked. When accrued cost reaches the account’s current payment threshold, Google attempts to charge the primary payment method.
- The month boundary is checked. If the threshold has not been reached, Google can still bill on the first day of the new month.
- The cycle can repeat. If spending reaches the threshold again after a successful collection, another automatic charge can occur in the same month.
- The threshold may change. Google can increase the threshold over time, so a charge amount seen today is not a permanent account-wide limit.
For cash planning, review both campaign pacing and the threshold-trigger pattern. A monthly budget does not necessarily mean one monthly card charge; high daily spend can create several collections, while a lower-spend account may be charged at the month boundary.
How the monthly-invoicing credit line works
Credit is the operating ceiling
Google approves a maximum credit line for the invoiced arrangement. Current costs consume that capacity, and unpaid invoices continue to consume it until settled. If several linked accounts or Google products use the same payments profile, their balances can reduce the amount available for new advertising.
The invoice is a repayment obligation
At the end of the billing period, Google issues an invoice showing the amount due and the applicable remittance instructions. The agreement controls the due date; Google commonly describes the term as 30 days, but an approved account can have different terms. Treat the invoice date, due date, legal entity, currency, and remittance information as accounting data rather than as campaign notes.
Payment methods vary by location
Google says most invoiced advertisers pay by wire transfer or check. The permitted method depends on the country and is listed on the invoice. In the process described by Google, credit-card settlement is not accepted for monthly-invoice payments. Follow the actual invoice and local instructions instead of assuming that a method available for automatic payments is available for an invoice.

Late or excessive balances create service risk
Monthly invoicing has no monthly-invoicing fee according to Google’s guidance, but it is not interest-free permission to pay whenever convenient. Exceeding the approved terms or failing to pay can cause ads or related services to be slowed, stopped, or suspended. Finance teams should schedule payment early enough to account for bank or check processing time.
Preparing a monthly-invoicing application
Use this sequence to identify avoidable problems before asking Google to review the account.
- Confirm the legal entity. Verify that the company applying has been registered for at least one year and that the same company will appear in the bill-to information.
- Check account history. Confirm that the active Google Ads account has at least six months of good-standing history. Resolve outstanding payment, policy, or account-access issues first.
- Document qualifying spend. Check the last 12 months and identify at least three months at or above $5,000 USD or the applicable local-currency equivalent. Keep internal records because the threshold is an initial test, not a guaranteed decision.
- Link a manager account. Monthly-invoicing guidance calls for the advertising account to be linked to a manager account before application.
- Assign the responsible contact. Choose a company representative who can accept the terms. Their email must be connected to a Google Account and should remain monitored after approval.
- Enable stronger sign-in protection. Google recommends 2-Step Verification for the account and contacts involved in the change.
- Reconcile billing details. Make sure the legal name, address, tax or bill-to information requested in the account, and applying company agree with one another.
- Submit and wait for review. Google reviews the application and company credit history, then decides whether to offer a credit line and on what terms. Do not plan campaigns around an assumed approval date or assumed credit amount.
Payment setting, payment method, country, and currency
These are four separate variables that are often confused:
- Payment setting: when payment is due—automatic postpay, manual payment, or monthly invoicing where available.
- Payment method: how the balance is paid, such as the primary method used for automatic collection or a permitted invoice remittance method.
- Billing country: the market that governs available settings and payment instruments.
- Currency: the denomination used for charges, thresholds, invoices, and any local equivalent of Google’s spend criterion.
Google may temporarily make some settings unavailable while eligibility or billing changes are being reviewed. If an option is missing, use the billing information and notices in the account rather than assuming that another advertiser’s menu or country rules apply.

Which arrangement fits a particular operating model?
Automatic payments are usually the practical choice when
- Your account does not meet the initial monthly-invoicing tests or has not been approved.
- You prefer the simplicity of an existing primary payment method and do not need a formal credit line.
- Your finance process can reconcile multiple charges during a month.
- Your spending is moderate enough that threshold collections do not disrupt working capital.
The trade-off is timing uncertainty at the transaction level: the account can be charged when it reaches the threshold, before the month ends, and again if it reaches the threshold later.
Monthly invoicing may fit when
- Your business meets the initial age, account-history, and spend tests and is prepared for credit review.
- Finance needs one consolidated invoice and a defined repayment window rather than repeated automatic collections.
- You can monitor a shared credit line across manager-linked accounts or other covered Google products.
- Your accounts-payable process supports the payment method and currency shown on Google’s invoice.
The trade-off is administrative responsibility: approval is discretionary, credit is finite, invoice terms must be met, and a late balance can affect service.

Example: threshold-based collections
Suppose an account’s current threshold is reached early in the month. Google charges the primary payment method, but campaign delivery continues. If the account reaches the threshold again, a second automatic charge can occur before the month ends. A finance forecast should therefore reserve funds for several transactions, not only for a single month-end payment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsExample: a shared invoice limit
Suppose a manager account and a linked product draw against one approved line. Campaign cost plus an unpaid prior invoice reduces available credit. Even when the current campaign budget appears reasonable in isolation, the combined balance can approach the limit. Finance and campaign owners should review the total covered balance before increasing spend.

Example: the $5,000 test
An advertiser that spent $5,000 USD in three months of the last 12 may satisfy Google’s stated initial spend test, but that fact alone does not create a right to invoicing. The company still needs the required business and account history, a complete application, and a favorable credit decision. The approved limit and terms can differ from the advertiser’s expectations.
Checks to perform before changing billing
- Record the billing country and currency shown in the account.
- Identify the current primary payment method and its backup or replacement process.
- Review recent threshold charges to estimate how often automatic collections occur.
- List every account or Google product that could share an invoiced payments profile.
- Compare planned peak spend with the proposed credit line, not just with the monthly campaign budget.
- Give accounts payable the exact invoice remittance instructions and due-date convention.
- Keep a contact who can access the Google Account used for terms acceptance.
- Set an internal alert before the invoice due date so bank or check processing does not create a late balance.
What Google cannot determine from general guidance
Public eligibility guidance cannot tell you whether your particular application will be approved, what credit limit Google will grant, which payment methods your country supports, whether a setting is currently enabled for your account, or whether linked products will share the same balance. Those details require checking the advertiser’s billing account and the current terms supplied by Google.
Google’s help pages used for these definitions were current as accessed in October 2026, but billing availability and account controls can change. Treat the account’s own billing screen, application response, agreement, and invoice as the controlling records.
The Bottom Line
Choose automatic payments when you need a generally available postpay method and can manage threshold-triggered charges. Consider monthly invoicing only after confirming the one-year business, six-month good-standing account, and three-month $5,000-equivalent spend tests, then receiving Google’s separate credit approval. Invoicing can improve payment consolidation and provide typically 30-day terms, but it adds a finite credit line, formal accounts-payable work, and suspension risk for overdue balances.
