A safe Google Ads API upgrade is a controlled migration, not a library-only change. Inventory every version and method you call, confirm the target version’s sunset date, review breaking changes, test against a separate account, deploy in a bounded rollout, and keep a recovery build available while the old endpoint still works.

This checklist distinguishes application rollback from reversing mutations already written to an Ads account, so your team can recover both the software path and the account state.

What changes when you upgrade a Google Ads API version?

Google uses two release types with different migration work. A major release can change contracts and has its own endpoint. A minor release is backward-compatible and updates the existing major endpoint in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Release type Compatibility expectation Endpoint work Client-library work
Major version May introduce removed or renamed services, methods, fields, enum values, type changes, resource-name changes, output-default changes, or new error reasons. Change the endpoint to the target major version. Use a library release that supports that major version and update application code for the contract changes.
Minor release Backward-compatible; existing calls should continue to work. No endpoint-path change. An updated library may still be needed if you use definitions added in the minor release.

Google’s versioning documentation states that major release versions introduce breaking, backward-incompatible changes. A version remains callable while deprecated, but “a version is disabled on its sunset date, and all API calls to its endpoint fail.” Rolling your application back to old code cannot revive an endpoint that has already sunset.

The schedule is version-specific and can change. As listed by Google on October 13, 2026, v25 was released July 22, 2026 and has an August 2027 sunset; v22 has a tentative October 2026 sunset. Treat the month-level v22 date as provisional and recheck the official sunset schedule immediately before setting your internal deadline. Google’s current schedule, rather than a generalized release cadence, is the authority.

Step 1: Establish the target and migration deadline

Inventory what the integration actually uses

Start with an inventory that can be checked into the migration ticket or runbook:

  • Every API major and minor version currently used, including hard-coded endpoint paths and generated client packages.
  • Each service and method called, including reporting, account-management, campaign-management, and mutate operations.
  • Client-library language, version, generated protobuf package version, and build or container image that ships it.
  • OAuth credentials, developer-token configuration, manager-account relationships, and the customer IDs reached by each credential.
  • Read-only jobs, mutating jobs, scheduled workers, webhooks or queues, retry logic, and any code that parses resource names or enum values.

Google Cloud Console API metrics can reveal recent methods and versioned method names. Compare those observations with source code and deployment configuration; metrics may expose a call path that a static code search misses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the real deadline

Record the active version, target version, announced sunset date, and whether the date is tentative. Do not equate “deprecated” with “unavailable”: deprecated endpoints continue functioning until sunset. Set an internal cutover date early enough for code changes, staging tests, production verification, and at least one corrective deployment before the published sunset.

For v22, the October 2026 sunset listed by Google is tentative, so a team still calling v22 should verify the schedule again before declaring an emergency freeze or choosing a final release date. For v25, the listed August 2027 sunset provides more runway, but it is still a date to monitor rather than a reason to postpone compatibility work.

Step 2: Review compatibility before changing code

Map the version and library change

  1. Select the target major or minor version and the client-library release that supports it.
  2. For a major upgrade, change the endpoint path and update generated types or package imports together; do not deploy an old library against a new endpoint or vice versa.
  3. Read the official upgrade guide and release notes for every version step between the current and target versions.
  4. Generate a diff of request and response protos used by your integration, then assign an owner to every changed symbol.

Inspect removed or renamed services, interfaces, fields, methods, and enum values. Also check field-type changes, resource-name and URL-format changes, altered output defaults, and changed error reasons. These differences can compile successfully while still breaking runtime assumptions, especially when your code treats an optional field as always present or matches an error string that has changed.

Use release notes as implementation work

Release notes are not merely announcements. For example, the v25 release dated July 22, 2026 changed customer lifecycle goal fields into oneofs and removed legacy lifecycle goal resources and settings in favor of a unified schema. Code that serialized the former fields, tested their presence, or deserialized the old resource types needs a deliberate rewrite and fixture updates.

Google’s v25.2 release notes are dated September 23, 2026. A patch or minor release can add definitions without requiring an endpoint change, but adopting those definitions still requires the matching client library and tests for the new behavior.

Check unversioned changes

Not every incompatible behavior aligns neatly with a major-version boundary. Google announces such changes on its API blog and summarizes them on the sunset page. Include those announcements in the review, especially when your integration depends on defaults, validation messages, or fields that are not explicitly version-gated.

Step 3: Build a test environment and coverage matrix

Use separate test accounts and credentials

Google says test accounts let developers try new API implementations or account configurations before changing production. Build a separate test manager and child-account hierarchy, issue test credentials where possible, and keep production credentials out of local development and CI. Test accounts cannot interact with production accounts, which prevents a test mutation from reaching a live campaign.

Isolation does not mean feature parity. Test accounts have no serving data and cannot exercise certain capabilities, including billing, conversion uploads, and bid simulations. Plan explicit production verification for any behavior that depends on those capabilities, with least-privilege credentials and a change window approved by the account owner.

Test surface What it can establish What it cannot establish
Test-account read queries Query syntax, field availability, resource-name parsing, pagination, streaming handling, and response deserialization. Live serving metrics or production account configuration.
Test-account mutations Request construction, permissions within the test hierarchy, expected validation and error handling, and application state transitions. Billing, conversion uploads, bid simulations, and other unsupported test-account features.
Production read-only verification Authentication, real account topology, live response shapes, and serving-related data where the account exposes it. Safety of a write unless the operation is actually executed or validated by a supported method.

Cover the calls your application makes

Build the matrix from observed services and methods rather than from the entire API surface. For each call, include:

  • A representative success case and boundary values such as empty results, maximum page sizes, and multiple customer levels.
  • Expected authentication, authorization, policy, validation, quota, and not-found errors.
  • Resource-name construction and parsing, including manager-to-client account relationships.
  • Pagination and streaming behavior, timeout handling, retry classification, and idempotency assumptions.
  • Serialization fixtures for every field your business logic reads or writes, including omitted, null-like, default, and enum cases.
  • Mutation responses with both complete success and failure paths.

Step 4: Test safely before production

Run read-only checks first

Start with queries that do not change account state. Compare old-version and target-version responses for the same test account where both versions are available. Focus on field presence, types, enum values, resource names, ordering assumptions, and numeric or date conversion. A response that merely deserializes is not enough if downstream code silently treats a missing field as zero or an empty list as “no campaigns exist.”

Use validate_only for supported mutations

For a mutate method that supports it, set validate_only=true to validate the request without executing it. This is useful for checking field values, request structure, policy errors, and other server-side validation before committing a change. Support is method-specific: Google Ads API documentation lists GoogleAdsService.SearchStream as not supporting validate_only, so inspect each method’s reference before building a generic harness.

A successful validation proves that the request passed the checks exposed by that method. It does not prove end-to-end production behavior, account-specific serving effects, billing behavior, or the correctness of your post-mutation processing. Keep executed tests in the isolated hierarchy for those parts of the workflow.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Separate unsupported features from untested features

When a test account cannot provide serving data, billing, conversion uploads, or bid simulations, mark that matrix row as “requires controlled production verification,” not “passed.” Define the smallest safe operation, the required permission, the observation period, and the person authorized to stop the test. This prevents a green test dashboard from implying coverage that the environment cannot provide.

Step 5: Roll out with observation and change tracking

Capture a baseline

Before deployment, record the important account and application state: campaign and ad-group identifiers, statuses, budgets, bids, targeting settings, conversion configuration, and any other resource your integration may write. Store request IDs, operation identifiers, timestamps, customer IDs, and response outcomes with your deployment record. The baseline gives reviewers a known comparison point when a result looks different after cutover.

Use a bounded deployment

  1. Deploy the new endpoint and compatible library as a distinct build that can be identified in logs.
  2. Start with a small, known-safe set of read operations or accounts selected by your risk policy.
  3. Verify authentication, request success, returned resource names, field values, latency, retries, and parser behavior.
  4. Enable low-risk mutations only after reads are stable, then widen account or operation coverage according to predefined controls.
  5. Keep the previous build and its compatible library deployable until verification and the first corrective window are complete.

Google does not prescribe a universal rollout percentage. Choose the slice size from your own blast-radius controls: account value, mutation volume, permission scope, and the time needed to detect and correct an error.

Watch the signals that reveal compatibility defects

  • Authentication or authorization failures that did not occur on the old version.
  • Changed validation errors, policy reasons, or partial-failure payloads.
  • Missing fields, renamed enum values, resource-name differences, and response parsing exceptions.
  • Unexpected account-state differences from the pre-deployment baseline.
  • Retry storms, quota consumption, latency changes, duplicate writes, or jobs that stop making progress.

Review modifications in the Google Ads UI Change History or through the API’s change_event and change_status resources. These records can show what changed and, where available, old and new field values. Include unversioned Google announcements in ongoing monitoring because an incompatible behavior can arrive outside a major-version transition.

Step 6: Prepare rollback and account-state recovery

Distinguish two different rollback problems

Recovery target Action Limit
Application code Redeploy the previous application build with its compatible client library and endpoint. Works only while that API version remains available; a sunset endpoint still fails after a code rollback.
Remote Ads account state Identify accepted writes in change history, review the intended prior values, and issue corrective mutations. Code rollback does not undo mutations already accepted by Google Ads; there is no universal automatic account rollback.

Keep the previous build ready during the migration window, but verify its endpoint’s sunset status before relying on it as an emergency path. If the old version has sunset, the recovery build must use a supported version even if its application logic is otherwise unchanged.

Understand mutation atomicity

By default, a mutate request with partial_failure=false applies only if every operation in that request succeeds. Where the method supports partial_failure=true, valid operations can commit while failed operations return errors. These modes create different recovery work: a partially successful request may require reconciling each operation, while an all-or-nothing request should be checked for confirmation that no operation committed.

Never infer atomicity from a method name or from behavior observed in another service. Check the operation’s documentation, record the response for every request, and design idempotency and retry handling around the documented semantics.

Define the recovery runbook

  1. Pause the rollout trigger defined by your team, such as a new validation-error rate, unexpected write count, or account-state discrepancy.
  2. Stop workers that can create additional mutations, preserving logs and request identifiers.
  3. Determine whether the defect is code-only, a rejected request, a partial failure, or an accepted mutation with an undesirable result.
  4. Use Change History or change_event/change_status records to enumerate writes and capture old and new values.
  5. Deploy the supported recovery build, or issue carefully reviewed corrective mutations to restore known prior values.
  6. Reconcile the account against the baseline, then document exceptions that cannot be safely restored automatically.

Assign an owner for pausing the rollout, specify which metrics or errors trigger that pause, identify the credential and endpoint used for recovery, and require a second review for high-impact campaign corrections.

Practical failure scenarios and responses

The old code works in staging but fails after the major-version cutover

Check that the endpoint path, client library, generated types, and runtime configuration all target the same major version. Then compare the failing request with the upgrade guide and proto diff for renamed fields, changed enum values, resource-name formats, or altered error reasons. Do not solve a contract mismatch by merely increasing retries.

Validation passes but production behavior is wrong

Confirm that the method supports validate_only and remember that validation does not execute the mutation or supply serving, billing, or conversion behavior. Reproduce the request in the isolated account, then schedule a narrowly scoped production verification with an explicit baseline and stop condition.

The team rolled back code but campaigns remain changed

That is an account-state problem, not an application-deployment problem. Stop further writes, inspect change history, classify the request as all-or-nothing or partial-failure, and prepare reviewed corrective mutations for the operations that actually committed.

The fallback build cannot connect

Check the sunset schedule for its endpoint. If the version is disabled, no credential or code change can restore it; move the fallback to a supported version and complete the compatibility work required for that endpoint.

One-page readiness checklist

  • Target version, current version, endpoint paths, library releases, and sunset dates are recorded and rechecked.
  • Cloud Console metrics and source review account for every service and method in use.
  • Major-version breaking changes and all intervening release notes have owners and tests.
  • Test manager, child accounts, credentials, fixtures, and unsupported-feature gaps are documented.
  • Read-only, validation-only, executed-test, error, retry, pagination, and mutation cases are covered.
  • Baseline data, request logs, change-history access, alert thresholds, and rollout pause authority are ready.
  • The previous supported build is deployable, and the team has a separate procedure for correcting remote account state.
