IT teams can now manage Android AI automation separately from other AI features: Google says administrators can configure, restrict, or disable automation across a fleet, while Android 17 documents a specific way to disable it on fully managed devices and the personal profile of company-owned, personally enabled (COPE) devices. Work profiles add a separate boundary intended to keep agent workflows out of work data.
What Android AI automation does
In its September 23, 2026 announcement, Google described Gemini using real-time on-screen context to carry out multi-step tasks across apps. It may draw on information such as a calendar, email, or browser content to complete a workflow. Google says Android Enterprise administrators can configure, restrict, or disable this automation through management policies. Google’s Android Enterprise announcement does not publish a universal EMM-console procedure or a complete list of policy options.
Google also describes work-profile separation as a safeguard: personal agents are prevented from accessing corporate apps and work data. Android 17’s enterprise documentation says agent workflows are prevented inside work profiles. That is a profile boundary, not a claim that every Gemini feature is blocked in every work profile. How to disable automation—and which devices the documented policy covers
The Android 17 enterprise overview identifies setNearbyAppStreamingPolicy as the policy hook for disabling AI automation. The page is for Android 17 (API level 37), and explicitly names two eligible contexts:
#1 Best Overall
- Google Pixel’s iconic design meets the latest evolution of the Pixel Camera on the new Pixel 11; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can stay perfectly present[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Sleek, solid, and built to last: Pixel 11 has the slimmest camera bar yet in its class, a smooth satin back, and ultra-durable glass and IP68 water and dust protection, so it’s intentionally built to stay strong for years[3,4]
- Long battery life: With 30+ hours of reliable power and upgraded wireless charging, your Google Pixel 11 can charge 25% faster than before[5,6]; it even powers up to 55% in about 30 minutes with ultra-fast wired charging[7]
- The latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera: Take super crisp closeups with an upgraded 30x Super Zoom[3]; Night Sight takes clear photos, portraits, and panos in low-light settings
- Fully managed devices.
- The personal profile of a company-owned, personally enabled (COPE) device.
Google’s announcement describes fleet-wide administration broadly, but the documented eligibility for this specific policy is narrower. The documentation does not establish that this API is available on older Android versions or in every enrollment mode. Work Profile automation isolation is a separate statement; it should not be mistaken for evidence that this API applies to the work profile.
Google’s public material does not provide one set of click-by-click instructions for every enterprise mobility management (EMM) console. Before changing a fleet policy, verify the device’s Android version and enrollment mode, then consult the EMM provider’s instructions for exposing and deploying the policy. Rank #2
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Other Android AI settings are separate controls
Android Enterprise also describes controls for other AI-related surfaces. These are not interchangeable with the AI automation policy:

|---|---|---|
| AI automation | Configure, restrict, or disable automation; Android 17 documents disabling it with setNearbyAppStreamingPolicy in specified enrollment contexts. |
Targets agent workflows that use on-screen context across apps. |
| Google Assistant and Circle to Search | Turn either feature on or off. | Separate feature toggles, not the automation policy. |
| Gemini Nano-powered apps | Set permissions for these applications. | Google does not enumerate every permission or supported app on the cited overview. |
| Work Profile | Manage business data and keep work and personal contexts separated. | A data and profile boundary; not a universal switch for every AI feature. |
| Workspace Gemini | Google describes cloud controls for Gemini in Workspace separately. | Workspace administration is not Android device policy. |
The Android-side controls and the distinct Workspace cloud controls appear on Google’s AI at work overview. Administrators should use the control surface that matches the feature and data boundary they intend to manage.

What to verify before changing a fleet
- Identify the enrollment mode. Establish whether a device is fully managed, COPE, or using a work profile; the documented API eligibility is specifically fully managed devices and the personal profile of COPE devices.
- Check the Android version. The named API policy is documented in the Android 17 (API level 37) enterprise overview. Do not assume the same policy exists on older versions.
- Confirm EMM support and deployment steps. Google’s announcement does not supply a console path that applies to every provider. Check the EMM’s current Android Enterprise documentation before rollout.
- Choose the relevant control. Decide whether the requirement concerns multi-app automation, Assistant or Circle to Search, Gemini Nano app permissions, work-data isolation, or Workspace Gemini cloud controls.
Google’s Android Enterprise materials point administrators toward Android Management API-powered EMM consoles and a Solutions Directory for management options. That does not establish support for this particular policy in every console; verify the provider’s implementation. Android Enterprise Solutions Directory
