Goodreads announced on October 5, 2026 that quarter- and half-star ratings are live. You can now rate a book in 0.25-star increments from 0.25 to 5.0. The change makes your personal rating more precise, but Goodreads’ book-page histogram still shows five rounded star bars.
How Goodreads’ quarter-star ratings work
The previous whole-star scale has been expanded to allow ratings in quarter-star increments. That includes half stars: for example, you can choose 3.5 or 4.25 rather than being limited to a whole number. Goodreads described the change as a response to years of reader feedback in its October 5, 2026 announcement.
The rating you select remains your precise rating. The five-bar histogram on a book page is a separate display: Goodreads rounds fractional ratings into those existing bars. Its stated rules are that values ending in .25 and .5 round down, while .75 rounds up. For example, a 3.5 rating appears in the 3-star bar, and a 3.75 appears in the 4-star bar. The 1-star bar includes ratings from 0.25 through 1.5.

Goodreads says existing whole-star ratings are not automatically rewritten. They remain as they are unless you choose to update an old rating. Written reviews are unaffected, and the rating and review guidelines remain the same.

Could average book ratings change?
They may shift over time as readers use the finer scale, Goodreads says. The company expects any shifts to be balanced because readers are split on whether they round up or down. That is Goodreads’ expectation, not a measured result: its announcement reports no quantified impact on average ratings, feature adoption, or the number of reader requests.
