Find the Golden Scythe at the end of the Quarry Mine, a cave beside the Quarry—not in the regular Mines. After unlocking the Quarry, enter the cave from its left edge, reach the Grim Reaper statue, and interact with it. The tool has a larger cutting radius than the standard Scythe and a higher chance to turn grass into hay.
Where to get the Golden Scythe
The Quarry Mine entrance is on the left edge of the Quarry, north of the bridge. You must first unlock the Quarry by repairing its bridge through the Community Center route or the Joja route. The Quarry Mine is separate from the regular Mines. Stardew Valley Wiki’s Quarry Mine guide describes the entrance and access requirements.

- Go to the Quarry and find the mine entrance on its left side, north of the bridge.
- Enter and travel through the one-floor cave to its end. Monsters inhabit the mine, so bringing your preferred weapon and healing items is sensible preparation. A side path added in version 1.6 contains skeletons, coal nodes, and large rocks.
- At the end, interact with the Grim Reaper statue holding the Golden Scythe. The tool is added to your tool set if you have an open inventory slot.
- If your inventory is full, make room and interact with the statue again. After you have claimed the scythe, interacting with the statue again returns you to the mine entrance.
The Golden Scythe page identifies the statue’s reward. The wiki also records that the item was introduced in version 1.4 and that, in 1.6, it can no longer be lost from inventory when dying. The Quarry Mine page documents other 1.6 changes, including the side path; the cited pages do not provide a complete platform-by-platform patch matrix.
What the Golden Scythe changes
The Golden Scythe cuts grass in a larger radius than the standard Scythe and has a 75% chance per swipe to harvest hay from grass, compared with 50% for the standard tool. Its listed damage is 13, while the standard Scythe’s is 1–3. These figures are listed on the Golden Scythe, Scythe, and Hay pages of the Stardew Valley Wiki, accessed in 2026; the pages give no publication year for the mechanics.

Hay collection is chance-based, not a guaranteed amount per swipe. To have cut grass add hay to storage, you need a Silo on your farm. The Scythe and Hay pages describe the standard tool’s 50% chance of adding one hay when farm grass is cut with a Silo in place.
The extra damage does not make the Golden Scythe a replacement for your regular weapon. Treat it primarily as a harvesting tool; use a weapon suited to the mine’s monsters.
How it compares with other scythes
| Tool | Chance to harvest hay from grass | Access and distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Scythe | 50% per swipe | Starter tool; cuts grass and certain crops. |
| Golden Scythe | 75% per swipe | Found at the end of the Quarry Mine; larger cutting radius than the standard Scythe. |
| Iridium Scythe | 100% per swipe | Reward for Farming Mastery; has a larger radius than the Golden Scythe. |
The chance figures are listed by the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Scythe, Golden Scythe, Iridium Scythe, and Hay pages, accessed in 2026. The standard Scythe is available from the start; the Golden requires Quarry access and completing the cave route; the Iridium requires Farming Mastery. The Iridium Scythe page also describes additional crop-harvesting functionality.

If you cut farm grass for hay, the Golden Scythe’s higher per-swipe chance and wider reach can make harvesting more efficient than with the standard tool. It is a useful upgrade, but it is not the last scythe tier: the Iridium Scythe later guarantees hay from grass on each swipe according to the wiki’s listed mechanics. If your immediate goal is to obtain the Golden Scythe, focus on reaching the Quarry Mine statue; no purchase or special crafting recipe is needed.
