Gold Coast beat Brisbane 40-20 for its first AFLW win over the Lions, scoring 22 unanswered points in the final quarter. In the other match, the Western Bulldogs defeated St Kilda 31-1, with Ashleigh Richards’ late goal sparing the Saints a scoreless finish.

How Gold Coast broke its AFLW QClash drought

The Suns defeated the Lions 5.10 (40) to 3.2 (20) at Brighton Homes Arena. It was Gold Coast’s first AFLW victory over Brisbane: the teams had drawn their first meeting, then the Lions won the next seven. The result also made it five consecutive wins for the Suns.

Brisbane struck first through Lily Postlethwaite and Orla O’Dwyer, moving ten points ahead despite Gold Coast having the better of the play. The Lions kicked the only goal of the second quarter and went into halftime two points in front.

Gold Coast took control late

Lucy Single, Gold Coast’s co-captain, gave the Suns a memorable third-quarter moment by fending off Sophie Conway and bending a goal in from near the boundary. Gold Coast had eight more inside 50s in the term, but Conway converted a set shot for Brisbane’s only goal of the quarter, leaving the Lions two points ahead at three-quarter time.

The decisive burst came in the final quarter. Havana Harris, who had managed one behind in the first three quarters, marked and converted a set shot, then shrugged off a defender and kicked another goal on the run from about 40 metres. Charlie Rowbottom added Gold Coast’s other goal in the term as the Suns scored 22 unanswered points.

Rowbottom and Harris led the charge

Rowbottom was player of the match, recording game highs of 36 disposals and nine clearances. Gold Coast finished with 28 more contested possessions and 22 more inside 50s than Brisbane, advantages that had not translated into a lead of more than two points before the final quarter. Harris’s two late goals supplied the finishing touch; she had signed a contract extension through 2029 earlier in the week, according to AAP.

Bulldogs hold St Kilda to one point

At Mars Stadium in Ballarat, the Western Bulldogs beat St Kilda 3.13 (31) to 0.1 (1). The Bulldogs scored all three goals in the first half, when wind and rain made conditions difficult. Their tackling pressure stifled nearly all of the Saints’ attacking efforts.

Rank #3

St Kilda’s Ashleigh Richards snapped a goal with just over 40 seconds remaining, preventing the Saints from becoming the first AFLW side to finish a match without scoring a point. The 0.1 was a club-low score, and St Kilda became the fifth AFLW team to record only one point.

Pritchard was the Bulldogs’ standout

Bulldogs midfielder Isabelle Pritchard finished with 35 disposals, including 20 contested possessions, as well as eight clearances, eight inside 50s, six score involvements, five tackles and 474 metres gained. The Bulldogs also held a substantial advantage in the contest and territory, finishing with 43 more contested possessions and 19 more inside 50s.
