The Godox C100 is a tiny, screen-free digital camera built around a transparent viewfinder-style display—and a light meter. It is an unusual way to take casual snapshots, but Jim Fisher’s September 21, 2026 PCMag review found awkward handling and poor photo and video quality. Its most practical use may be as a reflective exposure meter for film photography, not as a substitute for a capable everyday camera.
What is the Godox C100?
Godox calls it the “Transparent Viewfinder Camera C100” and describes it as the company’s first camera with a built-in light meter. Instead of a conventional rear playback screen, its transparent optical viewfinder overlays framing guides and shooting information. Godox says the design is intended for low-barrier, screen-free everyday shooting. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not evidence that every user will find it easier or more comfortable to use.
The basic idea is part camera, part exposure tool: frame a scene through the viewfinder, capture a still or video clip, or use the meter’s exposure suggestions while setting up another camera. There is no immediate image playback on a conventional screen, so the experience favors shooting without reviewing each frame.

Framing and capture
The transparent finder displays a framing overlay while allowing the scene to remain visible through it. Godox lists four selectable aspect ratios: 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, and 1:1. It also lists both still-photo and video capture. The finder’s unusual appearance is central to the product, but Fisher reported that he had to hold it close to his eye and found the frame lines and reticle difficult to see.

Reflective exposure readings
Godox describes the C100’s meter as center-weighted, reading brightness from the central 25% of the frame. Fisher reports that the display offers ISO, aperture, and shutter-speed choices: set two exposure variables and the device calculates the third. In his use, he found its reflective reading matched the Pocket Light Meter iOS app. That is one reviewer’s comparison, not a controlled accuracy test.
A reflective meter measures light bouncing off the subject. As Fisher explains, scenes dominated by mostly white or black subjects, or strong backlighting, can mislead reflective meters because the meter reads reflected brightness rather than the light falling on the subject. A reading is therefore a starting point to interpret, not a guarantee of correct exposure in every scene.

How good are the photos and videos?
Fisher’s PCMag review reports 2 MP still images in 16:9, washed-out color, limited dynamic range, and a minimum focusing distance of about four feet. He judged the image quality comparable to a low-quality dashcam. For video, he reports 1080p capture with jerky motion and poor sound. These are the reviewer’s observations and assessment; they are not results from an independent test conducted for this article.
Those limitations matter if you want dependable image quality, close-up shots, polished video, or control over what you have captured. The C100 makes more sense if the appeal is its unusual viewfinder and deliberately simple, lo-fi shooting experience—and you are comfortable with the possibility that the resulting images will be more novelty than keepsake.

Is the C100 useful as a meter for film photography?
It can serve as a reflective meter: point it at the scene, choose two of ISO, aperture, or shutter speed, and use the third value it calculates. That may be useful when setting exposure on a film camera without a built-in meter, provided you understand the limits of reflective readings and can judge when a scene is likely to fool one.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Incident metering is a different approach. An incident meter with a white dome measures light falling on the subject rather than light reflected from it; Fisher says it can be useful when working close to a subject, including with film photography or studio strobes. He names the Sekonic L-398A as an example and cited a $269 price in his September 2026 review; that is a dated figure, not a current quote. He also notes that electronic viewfinders on modern digital cameras make separate incident meters unnecessary for many users. Which tool is appropriate depends on the camera and lighting situation, not on one meter being universally superior.

Who should consider it, and what are the alternatives?
- Consider the C100 if you specifically want a small, screen-free camera with an unusual transparent finder, or a compact reflective meter that can also take casual snapshots.
- Look elsewhere if you prioritize comfortable handling, reliable image quality, video, or immediate playback. Fisher’s review raises concerns about each of those expectations.
- For a dedicated incident meter, compare the metering approach and current price of a meter such as the Sekonic L-398A rather than assuming the C100’s reflective meter does the same job.
- For a playful digital-camera alternative, Fisher discusses the Kodak Charmera and Camp Snap models, including their filters. His review does not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison, so assess current features and listings directly.
The September 21, 2026 PCMag review printed $44.90 for the C100. Digital Camera World reported Amazon options and bundles on August 4, 2026. Those are dated price and availability observations, not confirmation of current stock, bundle contents, or listing identity. Check current retailer listings before deciding what it costs.
Verdict
The Godox C100 is a real camera, but its transparent finder and built-in meter are the story—not strong imaging performance. The most defensible case for it is as a quirky screen-free snapshot device that doubles as a reflective meter. Fisher’s reported discomfort and weak image and video quality make it a poor fit for anyone expecting a conventional compact camera.
