Pre-ordering God of War Laufey does not mean you can use its bonus items from the moment the game starts. PlayStation says the items unlock through story progression, but its official materials do not identify the chapter or mission when each becomes available. That delay may help preserve the opening’s equipment curve, though Santa Monica Studio has not stated that as its reason.
What is the restriction?
The pre-order bundle qualifies for buyers of any edition, according to PlayStation, but the items are subject to a separate in-game gate: “Unlock in-game items via story progression.” In other words, owning the bonus content and reaching the point where you can use it are different things. The official announcement does not say exactly when the Last Wish Armor Set, Phranque’s Golden Leaves Appearance, or resource pack unlocks. What comes with the pre-order?
- Last Wish Armor Set: an equipment bonus.
- Phranque’s Golden Leaves Appearance: a cosmetic appearance.
- In-game resource pack: bonus resources, with no further itemization stated on the official pages.
PlayStation describes these as pre-order bonuses available with any edition. The story-progression note applies to in-game access; it is not presented as a special edition requirement or a pre-order cutoff. PlayStation’s US game page; PlayStation Store listing.
Why might a story gate be useful?
A progression gate can give a game room to introduce equipment and resources before adding bonus items to the player’s options. That could help the opening retain its intended pace or challenge. This is an interpretation, not a confirmed explanation from the studio: the official announcement gives the unlock restriction but does not explain its rationale.

That distinction matters because the game’s equipment can have gameplay dimensions as well as visual ones. Santa Monica Studio describes Faye’s Serpent Bow as offering full-aim and half-aim modes, multiple arrow types, and customizable Serpent Scales. But the studio does not say that the pre-order armor or resource pack changes balance, so it would be premature to claim that the gate is specifically intended to prevent an advantage. Does the physical edition qualify?
Yes. PlayStation says the physical Standard Edition includes the bonus through a download code. Redeeming it requires an internet connection and a PlayStation account. A physical disc therefore does not make the bonus immediately usable: the code provides access to the content, while story progression determines when its in-game items unlock. When is the game scheduled to release?
PlayStation lists God of War Laufey for PS5 with a release date of February 16, 2027. Santa Monica Studio’s September 28, 2026 announcement said pre-orders were to open September 29 at 10:00 a.m. local time.
