Tesla is not just entering Taiwan’s EV conversation: in the Automotive Research & Testing Center’s 2025 model-registration ranking, the Model Y led the market, ahead of Taiwan-built LUXGEN n7. But Tesla’s lead sits alongside a government push to develop local EV production and expand charging access. For buyers, that means strong evidence of Tesla’s market presence—not proof that every model, price, incentive, or charger is a straightforward match.
How many Teslas are sold in Taiwan?
The latest figures in the Automotive Research & Testing Center’s report, published in 2026 and covering 2025 registrations, put the Tesla Model Y first among EV models, the LUXGEN n7 second, and the Tesla Model 3 third. These are registrations, not a count of all Teslas on Taiwan’s roads.

The result is a useful correction to the idea that Taiwan is simply a market waiting for EVs: Tesla already has a leading position, while a locally developed model has established itself as a significant rival. The Industrial Development Administration reported 8,796 licensed LUXGEN n7 units by the end of May 2025 and described its sales as “直逼電動車龍頭Tesla Model Y,” accurately translated as “closing in on EV leader Tesla Model Y.”
Why is Taiwan building its own EV industry?
Taiwan’s government frames EV production and supply-chain integration as part of its transition toward net-zero emissions by 2050. The n7 entered volume production in 2024, giving that industrial policy a visible passenger-car example; it is locally developed, rather than simply another imported model competing for buyers.

The wider transport transition includes buses as well as cars. The Industrial Development Administration said domestic electric-bus operators had invested more than NT$275 billion. That figure is an industry investment claim, not a passenger-car subsidy or a measure of charging stations.
Policy targets are ambitious: a 2024 government release set a goal for EVs to account for 30% of vehicle sales by 2030 and 100% by 2040 for the relevant vehicle categories. Those are targets, not current sales shares, and the 2040 goal should not be read as applying to every kind of vehicle without qualification.
Where can you charge a Tesla in Taiwan?
Taiwan is expanding public charging through a combination of planned charger deployment, parking requirements, and service-area additions. The U.S. Commercial Service reported a plan for 4,000 slow chargers and 400 fast chargers during 2023–2024; a plan does not establish how many were ultimately installed or are currently working.

A Ministry of Transportation and Communications regulation requires at least 2% of spaces in public-owned off-street parking lots and 1% in privately operated lots to be allocated to EV charging. Those are minimum space-allocation requirements, not a promise that a charger will be available, functional, or compatible at every lot. In work reported for 2026, the ministry added 12 charging spaces across the Qing-shui and Hukou highway service areas.
Do Tesla chargers work with Taiwan’s EV charging stations?
Connector standards matter, but standard recognition is not the same as universal charger availability. In 2021, Taiwan’s Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) incorporated Tesla’s proprietary connector specification into four national charging standards. BSMI said the move was intended “to round out the electric vehicle charging infrastructure and to safeguard consumer rights.”
This establishes that the Tesla specification has a place in Taiwan’s national standards. It does not establish that every public station has a Tesla-compatible connector, that every Tesla can use every public charger without an adapter, or that charging-network access and payment work the same way everywhere. Before a trip, check the specific station’s connector, access method, and operating status; confirm from Tesla or the charging operator whether your vehicle needs an adapter and whether that adapter is approved for the charging equipment.

There is also a new equipment-compliance rule to keep in mind. From July 1, 2026, EV charging equipment below 30 kW sold or imported in Taiwan must meet requirements for electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), communications compatibility, and cybersecurity. The rule applies to equipment sold or imported from that date; it is not a claim that all existing chargers have been retrofitted or that a given charger will work with a particular car.
What incentives are available when buying a Tesla in Taiwan?
Taiwan’s EV-sales targets and charging-space rules describe policy direction and infrastructure obligations; they do not, by themselves, tell a buyer how much a car costs after incentives. Tesla’s Taiwan incentive information says the company handles applicable import commodity-tax procedures and describes a tax reduction for qualifying purchases involving scrappage or export under amended rules through December 31, 2030.
That is not a blanket discount for every Tesla buyer. Eligibility, vehicle-price thresholds, the qualifying scrappage or export conditions, and the amount of tax reduction depend on the applicable rules and purchase details. Check Tesla Taiwan’s current incentive terms and the relevant government requirements before relying on a figure in a budget; the available information here does not establish a universal rebate amount.

Is LUXGEN n7 cheaper or better than Tesla Model Y?
The 2025 registrations show which models attracted buyers, not which is the better purchase for a particular person. The established facts support a comparison of market position and some production and charging context, but not a reliable like-for-like verdict on price, range, warranty, service, software, or resale value.

For a buyer choosing between these two, the practical next step is to compare the exact Taiwan-market trims and current purchase terms, then check charging access along the routes and at the places you use most. Registration rank can tell you that both cars have found buyers; it cannot substitute for those model-specific checks.

Taiwan combines a strong Tesla presence with an emerging domestic EV contender, government electrification targets, parking-space requirements, and evolving charging standards. The evidence supports calling Tesla a market leader there; it does not establish that buying a Tesla is automatically cheaper, easier to charge, or better supported than buying an n7. Those decisions turn on current vehicle terms and the actual charger and service options available to you.
