GM’s 2020 “400-mile” claim was an estimate of the maximum range its new Ultium platform could enable—not a tested range for every planned car. GM later raised that estimated ceiling to 450 miles. A separate battery program announced in 2025, using lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic cells, targets more than 400 miles for a future electric truck; that vehicle and its range remain plans, not established production results.
What GM unveiled in 2020
GM presented Ultium in March 2020 as a modular propulsion system and third-generation global electric-vehicle platform. Its large-format pouch cells could be stacked vertically or horizontally to suit different vehicle layouts. GM announced battery energy options from 50 to 200 kWh and said Ultium could enable an estimated full-charge range of up to 400 miles or more. The platform was intended to support front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and performance all-wheel drive vehicles. GM said most Ultium vehicles would use 400-volt battery packs with up to 200-kW DC fast-charging capability, while its truck platform would use 800-volt packs with 350-kW capability. GM described these as design plans; they were not a promise that each model would offer all configurations or charging specifications.
Why the platform was modular
Using cells that could be arranged in different orientations was meant to let GM adapt the battery system to a range of vehicle shapes and sizes while pursuing manufacturing scale. The 2020 announcement also discussed low-cobalt chemistry, a then-planned joint venture with LG Chem, a goal of cell costs below $100 per kWh, and possible technology licensing. Those were company goals and business plans, not verified outcomes.

How GM’s range estimate changed
In November 2020, GM said engineering advances had raised its estimated maximum range for Ultium-based vehicles from 400 to 450 miles. Both figures were GM estimates of an upper end, not typical range promises for the lineup. The actual range of a vehicle depends on its specific battery and configuration; the platform headline alone cannot tell a buyer how far a particular model will travel. Ultium and the later LMR battery are different developments
Ultium’s 2020 announcement described a flexible vehicle platform using large pouch cells. In May 2025, GM and LG Energy Solution announced a later program to commercialize lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic cells for future GM electric trucks and full-size SUVs. What GM claims about LMR
GM said its LMR prismatic cell has 33% higher energy density than the best-performing lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based cells at comparable cost. The company said the greater share of manganese could reduce reliance on more expensive cobalt while delivering greater capacity and energy density. These are GM’s comparisons; they are not independent test findings.

The range is a target for a future truck, not a confirmed specification for a vehicle on sale.

Production timeline and current status
GM and LG Energy Solution’s May 2025 announcement projected pre-production in late 2027 and U.S. commercial production by 2028. On September 29, 2026, GM said Ultium Cells planned to produce LMR prismatic cells at its Spring Hill, Tennessee, facility. Construction and upgrades were expected to start later in 2026 and finish in 2028. GM projected 500 new jobs in addition to the facility’s then-current workforce of 1,200. A platform range estimate is not a substitute for the range rating of a specific vehicle. For a purchase decision, check the range and battery details for the exact model and configuration rather than treating “400 miles” or “450 miles” as a lineup-wide figure. Likewise, GM’s LMR range and energy-density statements describe a future program and company targets, not independently established performance.

GM said Ultium vehicles were designed for Level 2 home charging and DC fast charging. If you are planning home charging, check the selected vehicle’s charging compatibility and installation requirements; the platform announcement does not establish that a particular charger will suit every home or vehicle.
