GM is not removing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from every vehicle. The redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will include both systems in their new interface, according to GM’s September 15, 2026 announcement. That pickup update does not, by itself, signal a reversal of GM’s reported broader North American direction for future EVs.
What changed for the 2027 Silverado and Sierra?
GM says the redesigned 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra introduce a new interface that integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto alongside vehicle functions. The announcement was made on September 15, 2026, by GM News. Michael Wahlstrom, GM’s executive director of software product management, said the systems are integrated more deeply into the light-duty pickups’ interface.
Wahlstrom also acknowledged their appeal: “People really like CarPlay and Android Auto because they’re so user-centric.” This is GM’s description of the design approach, not an independent usability or safety assessment. GM cited its 2025 US Ipsos NVCS survey, conducted from October 2024 through June 2025, for the finding that infotainment ranks among the top three purchase drivers for new-car buyers.

Does this mean GM has reversed its EV strategy?
Not on the available evidence. A September 26, 2026 report from GM Authority says the North American approach remains divided: phone mirroring is present in ICE vehicles, while most future EVs are expected to use GM’s native infotainment path instead. That is secondary reporting about the broader portfolio, not a universal guarantee for every model, market, or future vehicle.

The pickup announcement is specific to the redesigned 2027 trucks. It does not establish that CarPlay or Android Auto will return to GM EVs, nor does the broader EV reporting establish that every GM EV lacks them. Treat availability as a vehicle-specific feature, not a permanent company-wide rule.
What do CarPlay, Android Auto, and Google built-in mean?
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect a compatible phone to the vehicle interface so drivers can use supported phone apps and services through the car’s display.
- Google built-in is GM’s native infotainment option on select vehicles, with Google apps and services integrated into the vehicle. Chevrolet notes that some features may require a service plan or data plan after an initial connectivity period; requirements vary by feature and vehicle.
These options are not interchangeable for every driver. If phone mirroring is essential, Google built-in alone should not be assumed to provide CarPlay or Android Auto. Chevrolet’s information describes wireless CarPlay and Android Auto on certain vehicles, not all GM vehicles, and its 2026 system instructions do not prove availability across all 2026-or-newer models.

How to check whether a specific GM vehicle has phone mirroring
- Identify the exact vehicle: record its model year, model, trim, powertrain (ICE or EV), and country of sale.
- Check current manufacturer specifications: use the feature list for that exact configuration, or ask a dealer to confirm CarPlay and Android Auto explicitly. Do not rely on a brand-wide or portfolio-wide headline.
- Confirm connection type: if wireless use matters, verify that the specific vehicle supports wireless CarPlay or Android Auto; support may differ from wired connection availability.
- For Google built-in, check connectivity terms: ask which features require a service or data plan and what applies after any initial connectivity period.
- Verify before purchase: have the seller confirm the feature on the vehicle being offered, rather than inferring it from another trim, powertrain, model year, or market.
Chevrolet’s phone connection support page explains how to connect compatible phones and makes clear that wireless availability applies to certain vehicles. Its Google built-in support page describes the native system and related connectivity considerations.

The cited September 2026 reporting does not establish a general return of either system to GM EVs. It reports that most future North American EVs remain on the native infotainment path, with exceptions and market differences possible. For a buying decision, only current specifications for the exact EV, model year, trim, and country can settle the question.
