NHTSA’s initial investigation documented reports of brake-assist loss involving 2023 Cadillac Lyriq vehicles and recorded GM’s explanation of a possible eBoost component failure. It did not, by itself, establish that a defect existed or confirm the full scope or outcome of any later investigation. The central question is what evidence verifies the failure mechanism, affected vehicles, and effectiveness of any response.
What NHTSA’s initial investigation established
On April 11, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24011 concerning electronic brake module component failure in model-year 2023 Cadillac Lyriq vehicles. The agency’s opening resume says its Office of Defects Investigation received multiple Early Warning Reporting field reports alleging loss of brake boost assist, a hard brake pedal, and a “Brake System Failure” message at startup or while driving. NHTSA said GM verified those field reports. NHTSA’s PE24011 opening resume records the reports and the manufacturer’s account.
Those symptoms are reported allegations, not a claim that every Lyriq experienced them. Nor does the opening document establish a final independent agency finding about the cause. NHTSA describes investigations as fact-finding steps; opening one is not a determination that a safety defect exists or a decision to order a recall. NHTSA’s investigation information explains the agency’s process.

The reported hardware mechanism
According to the NHTSA resume, GM told ODI that the electronic brake control module, also called eBoost, has an internal spindle that can fracture during an anti-lock braking system (ABS) event. NHTSA’s document is reporting GM’s explanation; it is not independently confirming that mechanism as the cause in every reported vehicle.
#1 Best Overall
- Precise replacement - cylinder housing is constructed to match the casting material of the original part and ensure similar performance
- Durable design - all rubber components are made of high-quality EPDM compound for resistance to glycol-based brake fluid
- 100% new - made entirely of new materials, not remanufactured, to ensure highest quality and safety
- Strict specifications - made to meet rigorous SAE International standards
- Ensure fit - to make sure this part fits your exact vehicle, input your make, model and trim level into the garage tool
The possible effect on braking
GM described possible consequences as loss of brake assist, speed limitation, and some loss of ABS functionality. These are consequences attributed to GM in the opening resume, not a statement that the vehicle necessarily loses all braking or that every incident produces the same result. The document says GM introduced a new “material clean break point” in assembly plants in May 2023. That recorded production change alone does not show which vehicles are affected or prove that the change eliminated the risk.
Why verification matters
A safety investigation needs evidence that connects a reported symptom to a specific failure, identifies the vehicles with the relevant parts and production characteristics, and establishes whether a response addresses the risk. A manufacturer’s explanation, a production change, an agency’s analysis, and a recall remedy are distinct kinds of evidence. The PE24011 opening resume captures the first reports and GM’s account, but it should not be treated as a completed defect finding or as proof that a particular production change resolved the issue.

- One Man Brake Bleeding: No more shouting instructions or messy oil spills! This one-man brake bleeder effortlessly flushes out old fluid while drawing in fresh oil, clearing trapped air for firmer, faster-replying brakes with every press.
- Adapter Description: 43.5mm for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Plymouth; 45mm for most European cars; 49.5mm for some Mazdas and most late-model GM vehicles; and 50.7mm for most Hyundais. Please measure your vehicle’s master cylinder before purchasing to ensure a proper fit.
- Improved Sealing: Featuring upgraded adapter caps and an ultra-thick, corrosion-resistant plastic bottle, this kit ensures a secure, leak-proof seal that prevents spills and guarantees mess-free brake bleeding.
- Semi-Transparent Design: The translucent body lets you easily monitor the fluid level during bleeding, so you can see exactly how much has been discharged at a glance.
- Usage Guide: Tighten the adapter onto the master cylinder reservoir and pump to 10 psi to pressurize. Connect the rubber hose to the bleeder screw, press the brake pedal to flush fluid and air bubbles. Repeat until clean fluid flows.
The latest official EA26006 engineering-analysis record, its findings, current scope, and incident counts are not established by the cited PE24011 opening document. NHTSA says investigation materials are added to its public record as they become available. Check NHTSA’s investigation records for current case documents before relying on later scope or findings. Without that current case record, broader vehicle-population descriptions and totals should not be presented as confirmed.

Do not confuse this case with the Equinox EV software recall
A separate recall, NHTSA campaign 25V-012, concerns certain 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV AWD vehicles. Its recall report says a brake system control module software calibration could prevent adaptive cruise control from bringing the test vehicle to a complete stop as expected. GM identified an incorrectly set calibration on affected AWD models without Super Cruise, and its safety authority decided to conduct the recall on January 9, 2025. This is a software-calibration issue, not evidence of the Lyriq eBoost spindle-fracture issue. NHTSA’s 25V-012 recall report describes that separate campaign.

What Lyriq owners can do
Check the vehicle by VIN
- Enter the vehicle identification number in NHTSA’s recall lookup to see unrepaired recalls associated with that specific vehicle.
- Check GM’s recall page as well. Campaign applicability and repair status depend on the VIN.
- If the vehicle displays a brake-system warning or develops a hard pedal, contact a Cadillac dealer or GM service channel for vehicle-specific guidance rather than assuming that an investigation listing identifies the cause or repair for that vehicle.
NHTSA says an unrepaired recall will appear in its VIN search and that recalls do not expire. The VIN lookup is for recall status; it is not a diagnosis of every reported symptom or a substitute for service guidance.
