A standard personal Google Account has up to 15 GB of storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos—not a separate 15 GB Gmail allowance. When that shared storage fills, Gmail may stop sending and receiving mail. Check which service is using space, permanently clear unneeded Trash and Spam, then target large messages before considering more storage.
What is the Gmail storage limit?
For a standard personal Google Account, Google provides up to 15 GB at no charge, shared across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. The amount available to Gmail therefore depends on what the other services use. Some accounts may have different storage because of promotions or managed plans. Google explains how account storage works with Google One.
Work and school accounts can have pooled or administrator-managed limits, so do not assume the personal-account allowance applies. If you use an organization account, check with its administrator.

Google says a full account can prevent you from sending or receiving Gmail messages, uploading or creating files in Drive, and backing up photos or videos to Google Photos. The problem may look like a Gmail issue even when Drive or Photos is using much of the quota. Google’s storage-management help describes these effects and the available cleanup options.

Google also says that if an account remains over its storage quota for two years, it may delete content across Gmail, Drive, and Photos. This is a policy condition, not a prediction that deletion will happen on a specific date; review Google’s current storage guidance if your account is over quota.
How to find what is using your storage
- Open Google’s storage manager.
- Check the breakdown by service before deleting anything. If Gmail is not the main user of storage, deleting mail alone may not resolve the problem.
- Look for large or unwanted items in the service taking the most space. Keep in mind that shared Drive files generally count against their owner’s storage, while copies you make can count against yours.
How to free up Gmail storage safely
1. Review Gmail Trash and Spam
Deleted messages in Gmail Trash and messages in Spam continue to count toward storage until they are permanently cleared. Review both folders, then empty them if you are sure you do not need their contents. Permanent deletion is irreversible.

2. Find large messages with Gmail search
In Gmail, search for has:attachment larger:10M to find messages with attachments larger than 10 MB. Review the results and delete only messages you no longer need. Google also documents filename:.pdf larger:5M for larger PDF attachments and older_than:2y has:attachment for older messages with attachments.
3. Permanently remove the messages you selected
After reviewing and deleting unwanted mail, empty Gmail Trash. Deleting a message from the inbox does not stop it counting while it remains in Trash.

Check Drive and Photos too
If Gmail cleanup is not enough, review large Drive files, backups, app data, and items in Drive Trash. Check Photos content and its Trash as well. Items in Trash may continue to use storage until permanently removed, so inspect them before emptying.
Do not assume that removing older Google Photos uploads will free quota. Google says some photos backed up in Storage saver before June 1, 2021 do not count toward storage. Check the account’s current storage breakdown rather than deleting a large batch based only on its age or quality label.

When to wait or add storage
After deleting many files, Google says it can take up to 48–72 hours for storage use to update accurately. Check the storage manager again after that period before repeating a large deletion.

If you need to keep the content and cleanup does not provide enough room, Google One is an optional paid way to add storage shared across Google services. Google’s storage-purchase help explains the purchase path; Google One Help explains how added storage works. Work and school account users cannot buy storage for themselves through the consumer option and should contact their administrator.
