If Gmail no longer shows a selected email beside your inbox, turn the reading pane back on: on a computer, open Settings > See all settings > Inbox, find Reading pane, enable it, choose Right of inbox or Below inbox, and click Save changes.
Restore Gmail’s reading pane on a computer

Open Gmail in a computer web browser and click Settings.

Select See all settings, then open the Inbox tab.

Scroll to Reading pane and check Enable reading pane.

- Right of inbox shows the selected message beside the message list.
- Below inbox places the selected message beneath the message list.

Click Save changes. Select a message in your inbox to view it in the pane.
Google also makes the reading-pane controls available in the Quick settings sidebar. For the complete settings route and split options, see Google’s instructions for previewing emails; the Quick settings shortcut is noted in its inbox personalization guide.

Check that the missing preview is the reading pane
Gmail can show a selected email in a pane alongside or beneath the inbox. That is the preview addressed by the setting above. If you mean the short text displayed under a message in the inbox, or a preview of an attachment, the reading-pane instructions do not establish that this setting controls it.

Google describes its inbox personalization steps as primarily for the web and provides separate guidance for using Gmail on mobile. The computer route above should not be treated as a guaranteed set of steps for the Gmail app or mobile web. If you still cannot find the preview, identify whether you mean the reading pane, inbox snippet text, or an attachment preview, and whether you are using desktop web, mobile web, or the Gmail app. The cited Google guidance does not establish a specific cause when the pane remains missing after it has been enabled.
