You can connect a compatible AI application to Gmail through Google’s remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, but a new setup is not reliably a 60-second task. Google’s documented process includes Google Cloud, API and OAuth configuration, and an MCP-capable client. If those pieces are already in place, connecting the client may be quick. Google currently labels the service a Developer Preview.

What Gmail access through MCP actually provides

Google’s remote Gmail MCP server lets compatible AI applications use selected Gmail capabilities after OAuth authorization. Google’s reference lists tools for searching email threads, retrieving messages and threads, listing labels and drafts, creating drafts, and applying or removing labels. The reference does not list a tool for sending email, so this setup should not be treated as an email-sending integration.

Google’s current documentation labels the service a Developer Preview. Check the configuration guide and MCP reference for current availability and capabilities before connecting an account.

What you need before you start

  • A Google Cloud project where you can configure APIs and OAuth.
  • An MCP host or AI application that supports remote MCP connections and OAuth 2.0.
  • Permission to configure the project’s OAuth consent screen, scopes, and credentials.
  • A clear idea of the Gmail tasks you want the agent to perform, so you can authorize only the access needed.

Google’s setup guide instructs developers to enable both the Gmail API and Gmail MCP API, configure OAuth consent and Gmail scopes, create OAuth credentials, and then configure the MCP client. That is why “any AI agent” and “in under 60 seconds” are too broad: the client must support the service, and the setup work depends on whether these prerequisites already exist.

Configure Google’s Gmail MCP service

  1. Create or choose a Google Cloud project. In Google Cloud, select a project for the integration. Enable the Gmail API and Gmail MCP API as described in Google’s configuration guide.
  2. Configure OAuth consent and scopes. Set up the OAuth consent screen and select the Gmail permissions required for the workflow. Google’s guide documents scopes including https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.readonly and https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.compose. Use the least access that meets your needs, and consult the current scope list in the guide rather than assuming these are the only options.
  3. Create OAuth credentials. Create credentials appropriate for the MCP client you will use. The redirect URI and credential type depend on that client; do not copy another client’s callback address unless its documentation instructs you to.
  4. Add the remote server to the MCP client. Google says clients typically need the service URL, Streamable HTTP transport, and OAuth 2.0 authentication. Follow the client’s current configuration interface and complete its authorization flow.
  5. Authorize and verify access. Review the Google authorization prompt before granting access. Test a limited task, such as searching or reading a message, and confirm the client’s behavior before using it on important mail.

Google’s documented Claude example is client-specific

Google’s Claude setup example uses a web OAuth client, the redirect URI https://claude.ai/api/mcp/auth_callback, and the remote service URL https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1. Google’s example says this route requires a Claude Enterprise, Pro, Max, or Team plan. These details describe Google’s documented Claude route, not a universal requirement for every MCP client; interfaces, plan requirements, and client support can change. See the OAuth and Claude setup example for the current instructions.

Choose permissions and actions carefully

The available tools cover more than reading: the reference includes draft creation and label changes as well as search and retrieval. Match the OAuth scopes to the work you intend to authorize, and do not assume that an agent limited to reading is the same as one allowed to modify Gmail. Google’s tool reference is the place to check the current operation list.

Google warns that an AI client connected through Gmail MCP can read, modify, and delete data in a Google Account. Its security considerations also flag indirect prompt injection: email content can contain untrusted instructions that influence a model. Review actions taken on your behalf, and inspect drafts before using them.

What to check if the connection fails

  • The client cannot connect: Confirm that it supports remote MCP, Streamable HTTP, and OAuth 2.0; Google’s service is not a generic connection method for every AI agent.
  • Authorization does not complete: Check that the OAuth client type and redirect URI match the client’s instructions, and that the consent configuration and requested scopes are set up correctly.
  • Gmail tools are unavailable: Verify that both the Gmail API and Gmail MCP API are enabled in the selected Google Cloud project, then review the client’s configuration against Google’s guide.
  • The agent cannot send a message: The published Gmail MCP reference does not list a send-email tool. Draft creation is listed, but sending should not be assumed.

Google also documents authentication considerations for Google and Google Cloud MCP servers in its MCP authentication guide.
