Research into appetite-regulating hormones—especially GLP-1—was being tipped as a possible contender for the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on the morning of Oct. 5. It was speculation, not a confirmed award: the announcement was still scheduled for 09:30 GMT when AFP published its report at 03:32 that day.
What Nobel observers were predicting
The proposed Nobel-worthy work spans discoveries about how the body regulates hunger and fullness. AFP’s Oct. 5 report grouped together microbiome research and the hormones leptin and ghrelin, which it described as regulating satiety and hunger, alongside GLP-1, a hormone released by the intestine after eating that signals satiety.
Medicines such as Ozempic mimic GLP-1, but the speculation concerned the underlying scientific research—not a prize for a drug brand or a treatment recommendation.
Why GLP-1 stood out in the speculation
David Pendlebury, head of research analysis at Clarivate, told AFP: “I would put GLP-1 at the top of the list, just because of its enormous worldwide clinical impact.” That was Pendlebury’s assessment of the field’s prospects, not a statement from the Nobel committee.

This simple trick eliminates shifting, safeguards the vial from impact awithout affecting cooling performance. The other side has delicate mesh pockets to hold 1-3 insulin syringes, alcohol pads, cotton balls, and other blood glucose patient items.
- Insulated Cooler Case for Travel: The insulin vials case is crafted with durable 600D Oxford cloth and 4mm thick insulation cotton. It not only provides excellent insulation, but also has waterproof, wear-resistant and stain-resistant functions.
The prediction rests on a distinction between fundamental biology and its medical translation: researchers study how a hormone works, while medicines use that knowledge to act on related pathways. The report’s stated reason for GLP-1’s prominence was the perceived clinical impact of medicines based on the research.
Scientists named in the report
AFP said Canadian endocrinologist Daniel Drucker, Danish physician Jens Juul Holst, and Yugoslav-born American chemist Svetlana Mojsov were frequently mentioned in Nobel speculation about the field. The report did not present them as an official shortlist, and naming them does not establish who, if anyone, would receive a prize.

The mesh pocket provides extra space for syringes, alcohol wipes, or other small diabetes supplies, keeping essentials organized on the go.
Other possible Medicine Prize topics
GLP-1 was not the only research area being discussed ahead of the announcement. AFP also cited skin regeneration and wound healing research involving stem cells, optical coherence tomography, immune adhesion receptors, breast-cancer research, and DNA sequencing that helped combat coronavirus. Elaine Fuchs and Fiona Watt were associated with the skin research, and Timothy Springer with immune adhesion receptors. These, too, were reported possibilities rather than official nominees or shortlisted topics.

How approved medicines fit into the story
U.S. regulatory information illustrates how hormone research can translate into treatment, but it does not determine Nobel prospects. The FDA’s 2025 Wegovy prescribing information identifies semaglutide as a GLP-1 receptor agonist and describes its use with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for weight reduction in specified patient groups. The label also contains important warnings and contraindications.

- 💉PERFECT FOR INSULIN & GLP-1 PENS: This insulin cooler travel case is also compatible with GLP-1 medications, such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Zepbound, Zepbound KwikPen and Wegovy and other tirzepatide injection pens. Our glp1 travel cooler case features a deeper design, so it can be closed easily even when filled with insulin pens, vials, and other medication supplies.
- ❄️6-8H COOLING EFFECT: Our TSA-approved Zepbound travel case comes with 2 thickened nylon ice packs, which are scratch-resistant and won't break. With high-density gel inside, these ice packs are lighter but last longer, providing 6-8 hours of cooling under normal conditions after 12 hours of freezing. Note: Cooling duration is based on testing under ideal ambient conditions of 25°C–30°C (77°F–86°F). Actual cooling performance may vary depending on ambient temperature and usage conditions.
- 🛡️HARD & NON-DEFORMABLE PROTECTION: Designed for Mounjaro and other temperature-sensitive medications, this medicine cooler features a waterproof exterior, a hard EVA middle layer to protect against impacts and accidental drops, and retains its shape to prevent bulges or dents. The innermost layer features full aluminum foil coverage, tightly attached for a neat and tidy appearance.
- 🎒IDEAL SIZE FOR DAILY LIFE: Measuring 8.5 x 3.5 x 1.8 inches and weighing only 0.57 lb, this zepbound kwikpen travel case is compact and lightweight, easily fitting into your backpack or luggage without taking up much space. Take your GLP-1 & diabetic supplies wherever you go.
- ✈️TSA APPROVED FOR AIR TRAVEL: Package includes 1 × GLP-1 travel case and 2 reusable ice packs. This medical cooler case is TSA approved for hassle-free air travel and is perfect for flights, road trips, camping, cycling, commuting, and everyday travel.
The FDA approved Zepbound (tirzepatide) for chronic weight management in eligible adults as an adjunct to diet and physical activity; the agency describes it as activating GLP-1 and GIP hormone receptors. These are U.S.-specific regulatory details, not individualized medical advice. A Nobel-news report is not a reason to start, stop, or seek a prescription medicine.
What newer GLP-1 research does—and does not—show
A May 6, 2026, NIH release described NIH-funded mouse research on how oral small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonists affect a reward circuit, and identified orforglipron as FDA-approved. The release concerns preclinical, mechanistic research: it does not by itself establish a human clinical outcome or explain the historical discoveries behind the Nobel speculation. NIH’s account of the study is useful context, but it is a separate question from which discoveries Nobel observers thought might be recognized.
